Brian Sewell was some character. The world was a blander place when he died.

He's totally right about the use of the word 'poofter' years ago. When I was at boarding school, anyone being a bit weird or seemingly a raving homosexual by the way they spoke or looked, would be referred to as a 'poofter'.

Saying ‘poofter’ and ‘f**k’ in that accent is so funny somehow.
The story about the condom in the wallet is so poignant.

Indeed, no one like him anymore, especially in the world of art criticism. RIP Brian

I remember him on a TV series he did, I think he was abroad somewhere. The sewers had overflowed and he was knee deep in the sloppy stuff laughing his head off. It was all the more hilarious for him being so posh. I thought he was a great guy. One of a kind.

So sorry that humans aren't evolved enough yet to be 'over' the different types of sexuality that exist. One day perhaps Brian. Thank you for your candour and what a brave man you are to have taken a lifetime of ridicule for something that was never your choice.

The British armed forces are very different to that now.

My old man fought WW2 for the duration in tanks. I asked him about gays in the forces back then and he said 'Oh yes, we all knew who the nice boys were'.
So perhaps Sewell is deluding himself somewhat. Or maybe it is different in the middle of a war.

Among the ranks, officers were seen as a different species. They could have all been "queer" or not, as many straight working class men would have never met an openly homosexual male. Sewell's subsequent career in the arts would have marked him out as gay, but in his youth he may simply be viewed as posh, and beyond normal codes of behaviour.

I would have thought that Brian would have been given regular beatings if it had occurred to them, so seeing as he’s probably way more intelligent than you I would imagine that he thought ,and was ,right. You never saw or heard him in 1952/4. You’re judging him by today’s standards, many years after his NT

The 'world' is a sad and ugly place. Way too may people are quite happy to denigrate and bully people who do not fit their desired stereotype. I do my best to avoid the world, but it keeps trying to catch up with me.
