Yeah, it ain't easy - I understand the frustration. Honestly, it took me quite awhile the first time, and the sound quality isn't that great compared to the original pads...Awhile back, I actually ended up spending the money for a new set of HD 280 PHONES (not pads), but the whisper-thin fabric on the pads is already starting to fray. Those cheap knock off pads aren't really sized properly, maybe the more expensive, official Sennheiser pads might work better. So swapping out the old pads with some cheap knock-offs can be done, but is it worth the effort, eh....
