You don't like the fade-out of "God Only Knows?" One of the greatest "tags" of all-time, along with "California Girls" and some others.

The entire thing was produced by one guy. Brian, with the help of Tony Asher (who helped write the lyrics) and the wrecking crew (Who played the instruments) used a modified version of Phil Spector is the wall of sound technique and it’s actually listenable. And to put it bluntly the entire album is pure Brian Wilson. The Beach Boys did their part with their voices but they didn’t write a single note. The entire instrumental track was completely Brian. With the help of Tony Asher he crated classic. It was around when this album released he got in contact with another songwriter. Van Dyke Parks, they were to make an album together… SMiLE. They recorded from 1966 to 1967 but unfortunately the project fell through thanks to a myriad of problems. Brian’s quickly deteriorating mental health, Brian swim capital records because they didn’t pay him as producer fees for pet sounds, some of the bad feeling in different about the material being produced and Van Dyke’s departure and the project collapsed shortly after.

The 'pets' in this album are the sounds themselves. Thus titled Pet Sounds.

Forget the lyrics. Those songs could be about hamburgers and french fries for all that matters. Listen to the musical bliss that occurs throughout that album. The complexities yet, the beauty of the experience is second to none. To be as complex and commercial at the same time is something that not too many have figured out to this day.

Brian heard every note of each song in his head before anyone played. He is a genius God Only Knows is my favorite on the album.

Brian gave this song to Carl, to sing.
Without a doubt, one of the best things
Brian ever did. So far, NO ONE has been
able to sing it as good. Alan's son Matt,
did VERY WELL, last June, here in Phoenix.
      But, no Carl Dean!

Listen to Smile. It’s like Pet Sounds cranked up to 11. It’s perhaps the most legendary unreleased album of all time.

Legend has it that the title is an inside joke and jab at Clueless Cousin Mike Love. In the studio, Mike Love melted down one day as Brian requested yet another take because Brian felt the sound wasn’t quite perfect. Mike Love accused him of worrying about things “Only dogs could hear”. Hence you have the title ‘Pet Sounds’. Great video. It thrilled me to hear of your affection for the album upon first listen. It made me wish I could “hear it again for the first time”.

In the movie "Love and Mercy", the constant retakes episode occurs within the recording of "Good Vibrations". Mike was not present during recording of the instrumental portions of Pet Sounds as the group were touring Japan and other countries in the western Pacific.

Try Beach Boys "Holland" album from 1973. It's my favorite. Very progressive.

Not counting the Smile Sessions as a true studio album, Holland is my #2 favorite Beach Boys album behind Pet Sounds, fantastic album.

You figured out why it's classic - Beach Boys sound happy but theres underlying pain.

Per a quick Google search for why it's called "Pet Sounds": "He [Brian Wilson] says the title was inspired by three things; his two dogs, whose barks were recorded and used as effects at the end of “Caroline (No)”; Phil Spector (whose initials were the same as Pet Sounds); and the idea that the music on the album was very personal and featured his “pet” (as in favorite) sounds."

Yeah this album is really about one guy discovering himself and going inside his soul to find the answers. Heavy shit for sure.

The title "Pet Sounds" has nothing to do with the lyrics. The title refers to the sound of the album, or rather the sounds of this album. These were Brian Wilson's pet sounds of the day. He's creating all these sounds, and of all the sounds he's making, the ones that made the album are his pets. HOWEVER, at the very end, you DO hear Brian's pets -- two dogs he owned at that time.

    Dogs, a railroad crossing?
    Diesel-electric locomotives.
    (Brian should have found Steam
