For the last several months, ABC News has been developing a feature on world champion juggler Vova Galchenko. The segment aired on the news program "Nightline", on Thursday, August 7.
Remarkably good for a mainstream piece on juggling-they took care to get their terminology right ("clubs" instead of "pins," for instance) and even took the time to briefly explain fine points like site swap patterns that usually get summarized as "wow" or "nifty." Plus, of course, the juggling itself is magnificent. Thank you for posting this!
I made it on nightline juggling 5 clubs! (4:57) But seriously, this was really awesome. Definitely the best portrayal of juggling to the public I've ever seen. Vova, great job on being the face of jugglers =D
This was the best feature about juggling that I've seen on television. It was honest, straightforward, and even educational those who don't know much about juggling. (The visual explanation of the patterns was a nice touch.) The closing line to this feature was priceless, I don't know whether or not it was scripted, but it was a powerful closing statement. Great job to everyone involved.
This video is addictive, I've watched it several times. I think all the inspiration that gives me is the thing that makes me wanna see that over and over again.
I wish juggling could get more mainstream coverage which would bring more money and people into the competitions. Great statement about drops and how basketball players don't make 100% of their shots.
Vova, the interview was amazing, I really enjoyed it a lot, you did very well!!! I also use the basketball example when talking about dropping to non-jugglers, hahaha. You're the maaaaaaan.
The only time I will watch the news. Circus school at the age of 7 no wonder your so good since you started so young, Keep up the discipline! Btw the Fatboy Slim video you made was the first video I watched that made me want to juggle, I watch it every time I need inspiration.
I love to see juggling in the media, even if they suck at explaining the siteswaps hahaha. This is very, very cool! Vova, it was great to meet you at IJA! I understand that stage fright is something every performer has to deal with, but your performances at the IJA were AMAZING! You put on a great show, and I'm definitely voting for you for president! See you again at WJF5!
At least you can know that the stage fright is totally natural, and normal, even though it sucks. I did magic in my younger days, but with each show - despite that every one of them went great, and I was well received by the kids (I did children's birthday parties) - I got more and more nervous before each party. I finally had to give it up, or spend all of my time puking. I couldn't handle the stress, and that was just for parties for little kids!
nice interview i liked your answerds very well thought out and i have no idea how u could have stage fright your liek so amazing i just seem to get use to it after about 2 minutes of up on stage and realize that i don't care who's watching my every move but awesome work
"Vasilievich." Yes, that means "a son of Vasili". We have patronymic names in Russia. Vova's full name is Владимир Василиевич Гальченко or in English letters Vladimir Vasilievich Galchenko.
Also, I live in LA now, and a great number of performers are a mess before shows. A coworker ran into a pretty famous comedian in the bathroom of a nightclub. He was in the stall, throwing up. He cleaned up at the sink, then went out on stage for his act. Apparently that happens to huge numbers of stage performers. They just have to learn to live with it, because they can't make it go away. Barbra Streisand even stopped performing publicly for about 3 decades, because of it. It's such a pain.
Donny Osmond says that Stage fright hit him in 1996 out of the blue, and that it seems to have stemmed from his perfectionism. He overcame it by facing his fear and with a lot of therapy.
"I just know that Vanya is a russian name for males meaning "son of god"..." I hear it the first time. :-) "...and which involves the name ivan." Well, yes. In Russia Vanya (Ваня) is a "tender" name for Ivan (Иван). But Ivan sounds like Eevan in Russian accented to the second syllable.
@ChrisHagadol "i read something like that..." Probably from other people, not from Vova. "i do believe anyway he could" I do believe that too, but after enough practice in it.
What's the COOLEST thing about Vova? Before you answer "His AWESOME juggling," think about this: He met his gorgeous former girlfriend via his TH-cam juggling videos. He plays CLASSICAL PIANO very well. He speaks perfect unaccented American English, having smoothly vanished his Russian accent in just 2 years. He lives in a custom-built California Mansion. He has a cool and friendly family. He can do a roundoff back handspring back tuck. Pick one or more of these things:)
I just know that Vanya is a russian name for males meaning "son of god" and which involves the name ivan. Thats what saw when i searched up wikipedia...
What I said about Russia is my honest opinion about it. In fact, my impression of it has gone further down significantly since I did this segment. We probably won't agree, but what would you say about Russia? As for the American media, they probably liked that particular quote, because it's a "rugs to riches" story, and in my life Russia represented the "rugs" part. Russia is so far off most Americans' radar that I doubt American media ever attempts to deliberately slight Russia.
"you have to do with this russian crime lord name kenny petrovic..." Petrovich is a patronymic name refering to Peter. Kenny is definitely not Russian name.
take it with a pinch of salt. it is a phrase that is used to help actors. it makes them feel better about there nerves before a show. i can see it is not full blown fact, but what opinion is?
@KatyaKoelker "...chem govorit, chto kazhdii v rossii beden i neschasten..." Вова этого не говорил! "...prosto potomy chto eto ne sovsem pravda." Конечно, более того это совсем не правда, но он этого и не говорил.
@OramaLama "hes better than anthony gatto" Well, I don't think Vova is better than Anthony. I would say Vova is equal to him in clubs, but Anthony is definitely better than Vova in balls and rings.

I agree 100%.

Congrats Vova
Brilliant explanation of what juggling is all about. And congrats on winning at IJA!

Short and sweet. Everything you could have asked for in a seven minute juggling interview. Great job Vova.
nice....saw it last night
Vova, the interview was amazing, I really enjoyed it a lot, you did very well!!!
I also use the basketball example when talking about dropping to non-jugglers, hahaha.
You're the maaaaaaan.
Nice vid, I hope there would be more stuff like this. Not just about Vova, but about juggling in general :)
Fantastic! I missed it again.
you are so inspirational, i hope to see you at the wjf some day.

The only time I will watch the news. Circus school at the age of 7 no wonder your so good since you started so young, Keep up the discipline! Btw the Fatboy Slim video you made was the first video I watched that made me want to juggle, I watch it every time I need inspiration.
Astoundingly good juggler!!
I love to see juggling in the media, even if they suck at explaining the siteswaps hahaha. This is very, very cool!

Probably my favorite juggler
no the best description of some of the patterns but ok. i was planning on watching that on tv and then i forgot to turn it on. thanks for posing that.
in this clip is the first time i've ever seen vova drop ANYthing
At least you can know that the stage fright is totally natural, and normal, even though it sucks. Wow man you are multi talented lol juggling and creating apps crazy I was very surprised to say the least. Keep it up!
they usually manage to screw up juggling on tv, but they've done this one justice.
Vova galchenko is a great juggler
Yeah, like Dave and David.
Dave on a personal level, and David on a formal level.
nice interview i liked your answerds very well thought out and i have no idea how u could have stage fright your liek so amazing i just seem to get use to it after about 2 minutes of up on stage and realize that i don't care who's watching my every move but awesome work

Nice to meet you, I'm Olga.
That is so cool Meagan! You're a celebrity! ctjuggles was in there too!
"Vasilievich."

im am totaly agree with dominikluger:Juggling was never presented better in TV!!
@johnnations Well, the coolest thing about Vova is no doubt his cool and friendly family! ;-)
Wow! I really like your description of yourself, "I'm just a guy who throws things into the air."
"in this clip is the first time i've ever seen vova drop ANYthing"
Well, you can see many drops in previous videos of Vova.
yes it was!
Klasnoe promo video. No nafiga na 2.53 v vozhdya brosat yablokami?
Hey Reeses, I'm a fan of the old show.
You are suck a awesome juggler!I am a fan of many of you, vova!
oh, i read something like that... thanks for the info, i do believe anyway he could ;)
Donny Osmond says that Stage fright hit him in 1996 out of the blue, and that it seems to have stemmed from his perfectionism. He overcame it by facing his fear and with a lot of therapy.
"I just know that Vanya is a russian name for males meaning "son of god"..."

@ChrisHagadol
"i read something like that..."
Probably from other people, not from Vova.
"i do believe anyway he could"
I do believe that too, but after enough practice in it.
i gotta tell you i think you had the attention before the fatboy slim video haha
i also saw this last night but it was cool dude nice job
Does that mean "son of Vasili?" And, how is it written?
vova you need to smile some more when juggling! :)
@masterlegend10
What do you mean? Vova always juggled with clubs and keeps juggling with them.
Hey Vova, I was wondering, what juggling balls do you use?
What's the COOLEST thing about Vova? Before you answer "His AWESOME juggling," think about this: He met his gorgeous former girlfriend via his TH-cam juggling videos. He plays CLASSICAL PIANO very well. He speaks perfect unaccented American English, having smoothly vanished his Russian accent in just 2 years. He lives in a custom-built California Mansion. 1:31 What is name of the song??
robot juggling ? did vova upload it ? (:
hes really cute.
Your incredable! Do u know the juggler who goes by OlgaKay? That's her TH-cam channel name too.
Vova has a reputation for being a little prickly, but he seemed surprisingly personable here
kool vova has a sweet american accent... juggling is much harder than it looks even with a basic 3 ball cascade.
@OramaLama
No, Vova has never tried 8 clubs.
Когда Вове поставят памятник, я думаю, ему уже будет всё равно. :-)
@ChrisHagadol
"...but claims to be able to, if he just tried"
No, he never claimed that.
That was a plain report, you done very well
(but they'll never know that 97531 is 5 balls into the air, instead of 753 ahaha)
That was top
Inspiring to me
I just know that Vanya is a russian name for males meaning "son of god" and which involves the name ivan. Thats what saw when i searched up wikipedia...
I can't believe they mentioned a (6x,4)*! I bet that confused a lot of people heh
What I said about Russia is my honest opinion about it. In fact, my impression of it has gone further down significantly since I did this segment. We probably won't agree, but what would you say about Russia?

"how many hours a day do you practice?"
Vova practices about 3 hours a day.
Yeah, that was Meagan in the IJA.
Traduzcan lo que dice el malabarista por favor
"No nafiga na 2.53 v vozhdya brosat yablokami?"
Это не яблоки, это мячи.
Too bad they didn't take the time to explain siteswaps... 97531 really isn't just three balls peaking at the same time. There's more to it than that.
to ask the other way around: does he doubt he could?
"Does that mean "son of Vasili?""
What means "son of Vasili"?
@clerkin74
"That Old Pair of Jeans" by Fatboy Slim.
@masterlegend10
No, he never tried 8 clubs.
I barely detect an accent, good on ya !
at 4:57 ctjuggles and bknobbs juggling clubs.
"you have to do with this russian crime lord name kenny petrovic..."
Petrovich is a patronymic name refering to Peter. Kenny is definitely not Russian name.
Anthony Gatto will always be the best, but Vova comes pretty damn close.
russian people are so awesome
@masterlegend10
Well, I guess finally Vova will try 8 clubs.
take it with a pinch of salt.
it is a phrase that is used to help actors. it makes them feel better about there nerves before a show. i can see it is not full blown fact, but what opinion is?
That everybody knows him.
@KatyaKoelker
"...chem govorit, chto kazhdii v rossii beden i neschasten..."
Вова этого не говорил!
"...prosto potomy chto eto ne sovsem pravda."
Конечно, более того это совсем не правда, но он этого и не говорил.
@OramaLama
"hes better than anthony gatto"
Well, I don't think Vova is better than Anthony. I would say Vova is equal to him in clubs, but Anthony is definitely better than Vova in balls and rings.
"Zloi ty!"
Кто? Это не я кидал, это Вова. :-)
Vasilievich.
they are. i mean nerves.
oh and btw i heard it from the game grand theft auto 4 during missions you have to do with this russian crime lord name kenny petrovic...
if you dont get stage fright, then you dont really care about your performence
new balls
i think
there cool
Вова не из тех. Ну, по-крайней мере, я так думаю. :-)
he has not yet but claims to be able to, if he just tried
Look down upon by Americans maybe the average American juggles easily 4 clubs
vova sounds stoned at 1 20 no offence
@adzthejuggler123
No.
Клас!
lol i guess so :P
Da pofigu. Zloi ty!
