Mark that brings back so many memories. In June of 1970 I got hired by the Northwestern Pacific Railroad (NWP) as a student brakeman. Who was a subsidiary of Southern Pacific Railroad. Anyway after my 90 day derail and passing all my exams. I was a rear brakeman and rode the caboose (called catching the hack). I could go on, but don’t want to bore everybody. Cool video. A Caboose is a Great Choice and a Popular Car which most Railroads Rarely use any longer. Glad to see them parked near train stations all around the US. 👍
That's Hans personal paint scheme. He commissioned a lot of his "special trains" in his "SP Black Widow" scheme from the 40-50's( Engines only never cabooses in reality ). He sold so much G scale trains he could get companies to paint them for him special!
Hi Mark...I'm sure Bill told me that he and Betty lived in a Caboose during the early years of their marriage? Never seen a Caboose until now, so thank you. I'm planning on coming out next year, so will hopefully see it for real.
They lived in what were called "Outfit Cars". Bunkhouses on rails for the construction gangs back then. They had them for bachelors and married folks. Betty was writing a book about their experiences but I don't know if she ever finished it. Let me know if you head this way. I'll buy you lunch and give you the dime tour!
It is cool to see the interior of the older cabooses. I have seen many cabooses that were made later, 50's and newer, that had metal lockers and interiors. I remember as a kid my dad was driving over a bridge in Bakersfield and seeing all of those Santa Fe cabooses lined up on the tracks below. There must have been 100+. Probably all going to the scrap yard. Such a shame.
Good talk explaining about the caboose .The restroom. As I remember you lifted the seat and looked down and there you could all see the rail ties as you did your thing .p.s. if you know nothing about trains Just think about it the next time you sit a spell 🤔
I also forgot to mention there’s an old wooden refrigerated car not far from the depot they should restore that in PFE colors and make that part of the museum as well good job Mark
The no parking sign is for the space next to the caboose. That's the bakery owner's car parked there and they use it for deliveries. The old reefer is used by the bakery for storage, and I believe, is only the top and sides. I believe the floor is concrete.
Hey Mark, I work for a Steelmill in Pittsburgh & Our railroad guys keep running through switches. Do you know of any Switch Indicators that are Audible & tell the operators the position of the Switch? Or any Suggestions to remedy our Problem would help!
Spring switches would probably help. Maybe installing targets on the switch stands. The crews actually paying attention to switch positions would be a bigger help. It's unlikely your company would want to invest in any type of signal system to indicate switch position. Thanks for checking it out!
what is plural for caboose, anyway? cadeese? cabooses? caboosi? enquiering minds wanna know, lol. That would be awesome to score an original stove and tool box for it.

Green must be the standard color for caboose interiors.
I've only been in a few. One of the Santa Fe's I was in was gray.

That type of SP caboose was the prototype for the low and mid range postwar Lionel cabooses.I have several.

I can't say I have one. I enjoyed working for SP and UP, but these days, I think NS has the coolest looking design.

What are all those cabooses up on the 14 freeway near Vincent? Someone bought them and was going to turn them into some type of motel?

As long as the caboose is unoccupied, it doesn't have to be inspected and certified for occupation. It's just another car.

That color is awful, hope it goes back brown with white lettering.
