I remember this game so well. I was in my first year of college and somehow I managed to have the day off from work as well so I actually got to see all of this game live. This was when I knew Dallas was well and truly back. There were a few more bumps along the way but they were well on their way to being the best team in the NFL.

This was the most important game of the Jimmy Johnson era in Dallas. The cowboys were 6-5 and were facing playoff elimination. They ran the table wins vs Wash,Atl,Philly, and Chicago; 4 of the 6 wins in a row were versus playoff bound teams. 1991 was the growing up process for those great Dallas teams. And wow. 1991 was the year Michael Irvin emerged as a dominant receiver and the skins game was his finest hour

Same thing happened to me in my first year of college. I was sitting in a lounge and overheard another woman say they had tickets to the game and were going to drive up and watch Washington beat Dallas. I (rudely on purpose) broke into the conversation and said, "Excuse me? You are going to go watch them play and maybe they will win but they haven't beaten them yet." I wish I would have seen her after the game because it would have been so sweet to rub that one in.

As people have wrote on here, this is the game that led the Cowboys to their dynasty of the 90's. They were 6-5 against the undefeated Redskins and no one gave them a chance. Not even 7 year old me living in Clifton, VA gave the Cowboys a chance. The Cowboys had to win and they pulled out everything they had to do it. Even using Steve Beuerlein as a back up. The Cowboys won and it gave them confidence to win out especially against the Eagles at Veterans Stadium to realize they could be a contender. The wildcard win against the Bears showed and then the next season is history. This is where it all started.

As great as this Washington team looked in 1991, I legitimately believe they weren’t really challenged for a few reasons:
    1. The 49ers and Eagles struggled with QB injuries all season long.
    2. The Cowboys weren’t ready to be a true contender yet.
    3. They got to face a weak AFC Central with the only strong team being the Oilers (who they beat by a field goal at home in OT).
    4. They got to face inexperienced playoff opponents in the Falcons and Lions who had fluke seasons themselves for the most part in 1991.

Steve Beuerlein was a better passer than Aikman. However, the coaches never understood and stuck with Aikman because of the money they had invested in him. The following superbowls were made possible by the offensive line and Emmitt.
