    I am so proud of my harvest of carrots today that I just had to brag to someone. Its the first time I have grown carrots in the fall. I tried it under the suggestion of many you tubers. We have been having some very cold days here in Ky so I made a little hoop house over them. It is working out fine. See you in the garden !

    Lol! Travis, I don’t see you as a “homesteader” or someone who feels the necessity to grow what you eat in order to have your family survive. Thank goodness! How depressing that can be!
    I see you as a hobby gardener with huge obsessive-compulsive tendencies, which you express in a totally beneficial and family-centered way! You’ve got strong scientific or explorative instincts as well. You make gardening FUN !

    I have been successful in getting rid of fire ants using GRITS! Just sprinkle the dry uncooked grits generously over the bed, and you can still eat all those good groceries in that bed.

    I started gardening a decade ago with two raised beds, 4'x'8'. It has since grown to 3 raised beds PLUS three 20'x25' and one 15'x15' in ground plots. It's been a long learning process but I've learned SO much from you, Travis! Now, I rarely purchase any vegetables or fruit (my permaculture includes bananas, figs, avocados, oranges, mulberries, pineapples, peaches, and grapes!) God Bless you for sharing your knowledge with us.

    Well said! When we started our 9 acre farm four years ago I went directly to TH-cam as the Instruction manual for homesteading. I fell into thinking my garden was suppose to look like Charles Dowding’s market garden and boy was I disappointed! It didn’t take long to learn better after I was completely overwhelmed & disappointed with my results. Now I do what i can handle that is suitable for my zone. I still go to TH-cam but just with a understanding that my home is unique and I decide what to create on it. Thanks for sharing 😊

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      While Charles certainly has a wonderful garden, it's also important to consider his location. Look at a map and draw a straight line from him over to the US, and you'll realize just how far north he is. Disease and insect pressure is much different there than where we are down here.

You have helped me more than you know . Thanks

    Boy, your intro is spot on. One thing I've noticed with so many other garden channels is the lack of context. A south CA gardner (hot and dry) giving advice to someone who, like myself, is in hot and extremely humid environment. May even be in the same zone, but a whole different set of rules, generally speaking.

    • @LazyDogFarm
      @LazyDogFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep. I like the Charles Dowding example as well. He has a beautiful garden, but completely different growing conditions than most of us.

    Travis, you’re one of the few channels I’ve watched for a long time. Appreciate the honesty and great motto in saying, “don’t set the bar too high” and don’t be afraid to show people how much work it takes to maintain those gardens at a high level. Let them see how quick those weeds can take over. I’ve learned the hard way and am still learning every year here in Eastern NC. It’s work, but if it’s what you enjoy, then the benefits far outweigh the time invested.

    That was a very good video on the reality of gardening. What I would say about the , don’t do what you do, doesn’t apply to drip irrigation and the way you fertilize, and the style of products you use. I mimic what you do on a smaller scale and I understand why you do so much for the content and also aware of your past produce sales from your gardens. I’m also a half zone away so your schedule is only weeks from mine. I’m very successful because of the knowledge you share. Keep up the good work because you are very talented, dedicated, and knowledgeable. One of the greatest gifts you have tho, is the ability to say you got skunked.

    I've done some experimenting with different veggies and some do well..some not so well. My goal for next summer is to plant only what grows the best for me in Eastern Maine and not waste the space trying things that just have not done well in my raised beds.

  • @AT_68
    @AT_68 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I agree with your recommendation of starting small. Too many people think they should plant an acre of vegetables the first year. They have little to no idea what their soil is lacking and what crops can/cannot grow in their climate. They set themselves up for failure. When I started planting vegetables, I started with two 16 sq ft beds, doubled the space each year, then expanded to four 40' rows in another area. In all, it took 5 years to get to where I am comfortable growing everything we need for our family. Next year I plan on growing okra for the first time (I live in Michigan - this should be fun 😁)

    Thank you, Travis, for the “you do you” statement. I watch your videos for educational and entertainment purposes. But had to watch this video twice. I teach for a living and grew up in a farming community on a small family farm which is what we always call them (not a homestead). Everyone is in different life seasons and has different needs and capabilities based on their background. I no longer grow a large inground garden but mainly do raise bed gardens now, however, I am thinking about making a few raised row garden beds (like a lot of the market gardeners do) just because it looks like it would be less work after set up and I would just like to give it a try. I feel like you mainly do you and don’t try to be someone else or be influenced too much by anyone else so thanks for that. As always great info and video with a bit of humor thrown in.

    Growing up we butchered our own hogs and nothing was wasted, but the testicles. I've never cared for organ meat of any kind but my dad loved it 🤑
    I get a lot of enjoyment from gardening and knowing what's in my food. I do get a little jealous of your gardens but then I look at mine and give myself a little pat on the back. We've been harvesting greens and lettuce for a few weeks now. My beets are going mighty slow but everything else is looking really good. I tried eating parsnips in the UK and I don't like them.

My mom and sister loved liver and onions and I couldn't even stand to be in the house when they were cooking. I tried it once and almost puked. Livers, hearts, gizzards, tripe, no thanks, y'all are welcome to my portion of the guts.

    My goal is to not feel stressed about the price of produce every time I shop (grocery relief). Since I prefer to shop no more than 2 times a month,
    picking fresh allows me to prevent things from getting lost, while still getting the variety that I sometimes like to have. It’s also great learning the skill in the event I do need to survive on what I can grow for a time. I started in August, but I’ve learned so much already.

    Hey Travis, Thank you for that truth talk. So many folks do get caught up in the pretty shiny garden items. The folks with a handful of sense know that some youTube folks do show mistakes and failures but many do not. They change angles or direction of light to get you to see things in the best condition possible all the time. If I watched you for 6 months and you showed me 50 rows that were 100% germinated and at harvest 100% harvestable crops I would stop watching. You always show the thin spots of germination and the thin spots where something did not perform well for whatever reason.
    I am not attracted to the perfect gardens I like the ones that are always a work in progress and are waiting for the next step.

    Travis - Advion. Best fire ant killer I have found. You can get it at Amazon. Seems to be a little pricey but not in the long run. I am in North Texas. Some years are worse than ever with them. Most hills take one application and they are gone in 24 hours.
    I had one bill I had to apply it twice. I hit that thing with the mower. Ride’em cowboy went through my mind when I hit it.
    Also, I like that you tell what you do wrong or won’t do again. That helps me not to duplicate the major mistakes.

    Backyard garden is constrained by water availability and costs. Also need to get about 800+ feet of 7' high redwood fence built to control deer access (plus roaming homeless people). Our small deer can sometimes jump 6' but not 7'. Need to work on funding the fence and also some are saying the 10' metal poles can be hard to find at times. Figuring the cost will be over $3 and likely $4 for every inch of fence to install.

    It's very realistic once you purchase a freeze dryer, no more throwing away or trying to give away excess harvest before they spoil, now you can freeze dry every bit of the harvest and maybe skip planting that particular crop next year from saving your excess that stays almost garden fresh for 25 years.

    Gardening is lot like WORKING OUT IN THE GYM , If you don't learn the basic's of how your muscles work, you will end up wasting alot time with no result from the lack of some thing simple as you got to squeeze your muscle at the top , to you have to prep in fall if you plan on growing a vegetable using your grass lawn in the spring . OR you're going up digging up a whole lot of grass and end with with mediocre soil to where you could have just picked a spot and covered it with piece card board in the FALL and have fairly good spot to grow a few vegetables .

    I tried to do a nearly 40x20 plot (my entire backyard) with the method you use and it was just too much work for me. I’m a regular guy who is new to gardening and don’t have the wheel hoes or any of that. Mostly had to run drip and do everything by hand.
    One plot of this size was just too much for me. In the heat of the Florida summer, I just let it go. Easy to justify doing something else indoors on a 105 degree afternoon instead of shoveling compost or building a trellis system.
    I have started building wooden raised beds in order to have better soil instead of pure sand, have a better concentrated growing area, and just be able to spend more time on each individual plant.
    You really dedicate yourself and spend the time and your garden looks amazing, but for me I’d rather have less plants and be able to give each one the time it deserves than spread myself too thin and my garden just look terrible.
    It seems whatever way you garden, it always works great and looks top notch. 👍🏻

    While I do think it would be very awesome to grow 80 to 100% of your own food, I realize it is not a very realistic goal. Especially if you live in a neighborhood just don’t have the land, also I think your zone with dictate to some degree unless you have the ability to have big high tunnels. But that takes a lot of time and cost. Also if you work A full-time or more job just don’t have the time to dedicate. I did appreciate the upfront honesty and realistic approach you had a discussion found that very refreshing. Nice to see all the different options with greens and how to harvest. I have learned ALOT from watching your videos!! So thank you very much for doing what you do! And while I’m here… I read a book over 20 years ago and I can’t remember the Title or who wrote it. But it was about diets and such. This guy wrote that God made everything and everybody with a purpose. Animals were put here for different jobs, some was for us to eat, some was for keeping things cleaned up. So any animal that scavenges like chickens, catfish, most seafood were not put here for us to eat. Bottom line, if we stuck with Gods plans on what we ate, we’d be a lot healthier. Cancers wouldn’t be so common etc… it was an interesting read. I’m going to keep trying to find it so I can read it again! Anyway just something to think on. It had more info on other things in our diets too.

    Do you fertilize your raised beds more than your earth garden? Mine seemed to not produce as much

    • @classicrocklover5615
      @classicrocklover5615 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The key to raised beds or containers is that every time you water it, nutrients are washing out, beyond the plants'reach. So you need to either use a slow release fertilizer that is physically located near the top of the containers. Or build a self-wicking pot, and fill the container with a diluted liquid fertilizer the roots can just feed from as needed. Research how to build a self wicking/watering tub. Then you can fill the overflow with diluted miracle grow, or compost tea, or manure tea, liquid fish fertilizer, etc.
