It's way simpler than it sounds. I just found this song yesterday. I have seen Fugazi many many times back in the late 80's and early 90's. They're shows had an energy that no one else could conjure. I even met Ian in DC back in 1995. He still lived in that house that was on the Minor Threat album cover. We used to ride bike by there when me friend was stationed in DC. He was just sitting on the porch.
Oh wow, that’s awesome. This is the only song by Fugazi that I was familiar with.

I'm not a very good musician especially not when it comes to piano, but I hear the bass notes of the song an octave lower from what you played, but hear the chords themselves exactly as you play them in the video. And if you play them like that the left hand would just function as hitting bass notes where as the right hand would just do the chords and the melody after the 2nd verse (which I also hear being played an octave lower) Anyway, thanks a lot for making this video :)

I think i figured out the bass notes in the solo (with one or two notes wrong?) with help from another video.
Starting from the lowest G, then ascending except for a low E
G -> D -> B -> A -> F# -> low E -> +1 octave E -> C C
Repeat until the solo finishes

Hey! So I learned this song mostly by ear. In the original, the piano Ian Mackaye is playing is slightly out of tune. That might be why it doesn’t sound the same. But feel free to check out the other vids and see if there is a tutorial on their specific version. But this one has the vocals and the accompaniment all in the same vid, so the part he’s singing is played on the piano.

Were you using sheet music compared to my tutorial or something? I’m pretty sure my tutorial in the same key as the original but I could be wrong as I learned it by ear and don’t use sheets
@@BrennanChilds no, no sheet, I just tried playing along the chords.. the other very likely explanation might be that the original is played on a piano that's out of tune, and it doesn't sound otherworldly c:

Really nice tutorial! I have one question, though: I've compared this version to the album version of the song, and it seems like in the album the song is been played on a lower key? Different notes / Scale is being used? How did they achieve this effect?
Thanks I’m really glad you liked it! 🫶🏻🫶🏻Im not sure if this is identical to the original because I learned it by ear and did a cover on the channel initially and then made the tutorial based on my cover. It could be a lower octave or key in the original.
@@BrennanChilds i think the song’s just detuned a little bit. There’s a c note that’s pretty easy to hear but the G notes sound a little off. I can’t find any other notes that sound as close as the G does tho

Hi, nice video. I am currently learning, but is it ok if some fingers be not as in video? I find it hard to play with specific fingers sometimes on the video, but with other fingers they gl well(like changing thumb and point finger for example)? + first song on piano(never had experience before)

The second and third chord are a bit off, since you're generally playing about an octave higher it still sort of works with the second one but the fourth one kinda makes it sound pretty different from the original when mixed with the lead/singing melody

@@BrennanChildsmy bad I meant the third. In the original you can hear the same note play in every chord, even the third one that’s in minor, which makes it harmonious, then in the fourth it’s replaced with a higher one

Hey no worries! What you can do is find the next higher E key. So even if you have to stay on that E key and then play E G and B all together and just not move if that makes sense?

What about the 24 second piano "solo" in 01:08 to 1:32?(as in the original song) Is it the same as the rest of the song?
Hey good question! So because this tutorial has his vocals and the accompaniment, the solo is the same as the first section of this tutorial. You can speed up the pace a little but it’s virtually the same as the normal right hand in this if that makes sense. Oh you can also add in a piano roll at beginning and play E G and then start the normal part I teach with B etc etc.
everywhere always says this song is in F# Major, but isn't it not in F# Major? It seems like its in C major just the vocals are singing weird notes

@@BrennanChilds just when you are explaining how to play the chords at the start
The only thing is that I think the chords don't really change much, I don't think you need to do the big jumps. I think the root note changes but the chord is basically a G until it gets the C but then goes back to the G shape for all other chords, and then in the piano solo part I'm sure the melody is played a whole octave lower. This version would sound more complete without vocals though, but the original is slightly different
Yeah I had to do it a bit different than the original since I’m incorporating the vocal part onto the piano. The jump can be a little annoying so feel free to play how you like it

Hey hey! Sorry for my delayed response. In the cover, the vocal melody in the right hand is the same as the piano solo in the original if that’s makes sense. But in my cover the only thing I do diff is I play the left hand chords broken up instead of all at once

the melody part is a little confusing for me. why do you play “out here” (2 syllables) with 4 notes? (the four Bs in the beginning)

I know my bad! So because I’m doing the vocal melody on piano, the solo is actually the same as what I’m already playing in the right hand at 2:44 the only difference is is does a roll from E to G to B before starting at 2:44 hope that helps!
Great tutorial, helped a lot. But unfortunately the way he plays it in the song is a lot simpler IMO - sounds like he's playing single notes for the bass with the left hand and then chords with the right until the interlude

Try putting the video in .5 speed for the tricky parts. The timing on this one takes some practice, hope that helps a bit.
