This is exactly where we're wanting to move. I did all the same things I've been looking at everything on TH-cam following all the real estate people following other people that moved up. I don't have your tools or know how. I'm glad you already found some Community because that's so important. That's the thing that scares me the most is going up where I got no kin and no lifelong friends. Where no spring chickens. Most of our 7 kids are grown we got two still with us 14 and 23 and others might come up later and it seems like you and I got the same goal to have a homestead for the family is really what it's been about.
I live in Albion Maine. It's central, but I'm absolutely in the woods. I live in the freedom town line. If you move to this area, find me. I will introduce you to the community. Albion has 1,500 residents & is the cheapest taxes in Kennebec county. (Granted, one driveway over is Freedom-Waldo County, which are still very low taxes). This is a farming town. I grew up 10 miles down the road in China Maine. Which has a 7 mile lake. Palermo & Liberty are bordering towns and have lake st George. The cleanest lake in the state. It's amazing being on that water. Waterville is very close. It's recently been gentrified. Trendy restaurants, classic ones also. A lot of local organic shops of all kind. O! An organic local sourced deli/restaurant just opened in China Village. All this to say, I love central Maine. You can be to either end of the state within the day. There's so much to do if you're into outdoor activities. Winter gets milder every winter but most people still consider this a lot of snow. (It's not!) I'm thankful to live in a safe state. I can walk outside barefoot & swim in any water. If you want more of a city vice, southern maine is very trendy. Most of the jobs in the state are in the southern areas. It's also extremely expensive compared to the rest of the state. If you don't find me, never fear! Haha! I promise you, it won't be long before you make good friends wherever you end up. Go to the local church of your liking or a local shop, you'll find your community & you'll love it here! My very best, to you! Take care.
I’m nearby across the border in Canada. I see people online all the time claiming you can’t grow anything there. Not true at all. If you check your growing zone classification, you can grow all kinds of food. You’ll never run out of new things to grow.
This would be like central europe, we grow a lot. Exceptions are sweet potatoes, some hot peppers or okra. All basic veg grows decently in this climate 😊

Hello , new to your channel. Not new to Maine or homesteading . I like the name of your homestead as we homestead at the top of a hill too. It is always challenging especially gardening and winter water lugging on ice !
My wife and I moved to the twin cities in Minnesota from Florida this past August. I wanna maybe move further north to a more rural place. I feel like the only way we'll ever own something is if we build it ourselves. Or park a camper or something on cheap land. We might move states again idk. Everything is kind of a pipe dream at this point. But maybe one day
Awesome. I’m from western Washington state. Not Seattle. Sold out in 21 moved to southern Mo. don’t get me wrong Missouri is nice state. bought a 20 acre farm. But doesn’t feel right to me. Myself I’m heading back west and up to Alaska. Seems the only place that felt home. Mountains and pacific ocean. I feel land locked. Wife said get established which I’m a union equipment operator. Plenty of work. So after my job over in Washington state I’m heading north. I take winter off to see wife. Looked at Maine myself. But my 302 union is out west. Best of luck bud. Either we will rent farm base it’s paid for or sell out after I’m established.
