BURMA: BURMESE REBEL ARMIES PREPARE FOR GOVERNMENT ATTACK

One of Burma's last rebel armies is preparing for what it believes is an imminent government attack.
Leaders of the ethnic Karenni National Progressive Party say Burma's military regime
is on the brink of mounting an offensive to end their struggle for good.
In Thailand, meanwhile, exiled Burmese students marked their country's national day with a fresh show of support for Aung San Suu Kyi - Burma's pro-democracy leader.
Inside Burma, close to the south east border with Thailand, a small guerrilla army maintains a state of readiness for an attack they believe could come at any time.
The ethnic Karenni National Progressive Party has fought the government for many years, in the dwindling hope of having its own state.
Two years ago they signed a ceasefire, but it soon broke down.
Since then, military reverses have left them with just one stronghold - a cluster of
rough looking huts high up on Nyan Mu hill - about 30 kilometres (20 miles) from the Thai border town of Mae Hong Son.
The government bases can be seen across the valley, just a few kilometres away.
It's from there that the danger comes.
There have been skirmishes and casualties reported in recent weeks.
With the dry season setting in, the rebels expect a full offensive that would clear them out of the last territory they hold.
The division commander says he's watched the build-up for weeks.

"Over the past few months the government's brought up a lot of troops along the border. Since then they've stepped up activity, with military columns and clashes all over the region."

Food supplies on the mountain are short.
There's no meat - the rebels survive on rice and vegetables.
Some dishes are even laced with tree bark - to give a different flavour to their meals.
At first light every morning, they take up positions, in case of attack.
Their troop strength is a well-guarded secret, but it is unlikely to number many more than a few hundred.
The rebels conduct joint patrols with another small rebel group - the Burma Students Army (A-B-S-D-F) - and carry out hit-and-run raids on Burmese positions.
Earlier this year, the government launched a huge offensive against another rebel army - the Karen National Union - along the same border.
The K-N-U was scattered and now fights a mobile guerrilla war.
The K-N-P-P forces are likely to do the same.
In Bangkok, meanwhile, exiled students marked their country's national day with a small protest outside the Burmese embassy.
They called for the government to open dialogue with Aung San Suu Kyi and her party, as well as with the leaders of the ethnic minorities.
The protesters also demanded the release of political prisoners.
Burma has been run by a military government since 1962.
Many students fled abroad in 1988 after pro-democracy demonstrations were brutally suppressed with great loss of life.

The ethnic groups (except rohyngas) we’re here in “myanmar” before the Burmese came in the early 900’s and slaughtered, forcing them to move, spread and interbreed with the surrounding neighbors. Because of this, the british easily took burma and controlled it until 1948. right away after independence, the Burmese would start killing ethnic groups living in the border. Even though the Burmese government promise peace, they still send troops to burn buildings, bomb villages, gunning people living in those villages. The ethnic groups were forced to move to neighboring counties like India, southern China, Thailand and etc. those ethnic groups were not welcomed and were escorted back to burma just to be killed by the Burmese. One Burmese leader said “in a few years, there will be no karen, if you want to see them, you will have to go to the museum”. They are indigenous to the land. Its their home.
