Lord Parkinson of Whitley Bay is the Minister whose duty it is "to superintend, and promote the improvement of, the public library service provided by local authorities in England and Wales and to secure the proper discharge by local authorities of the functions in relation to libraries conferred on them as library authorities by or under this Act." (Public Libraries and Museums Act 1964). Of course, the current government has shown blatant disregard of many of their statutory responsibilities, but the law is perfectly clear.
Thank you Phil for letting me know you count on me as an old croydon person I will spread the word to my mates who still live there. All the best to you
Thanks Peter!
Thanks Phil, my family have used the library in the past and the Council is being unimaginative in its proposal to close the Library. It is calling on local groups to take it on as a community venture but that's probably unrealistic and some feel that it is being set up to fail and an asset disposal is not ruled out. Ben Taylor is campaigning to be Labour's first Croydon South MP and he supports retaining Sanderstead and Coulsdon libraries and its often a discussion with residents on frequent canvassing sessions. I have been a subscriber to your channel for some time and will recommend our Sanderstead and Purley members give it a view. Cheers
Thank you Alan. You are correct in your assessment I think. Let’s hope some good comes of highlighting this!
So sad, it was the first library I ever used circa 1964
It would have come under Coulsdon and Purley when I lived there.
It's a shame central government is starving councils of general funding forcing them to cut back on services.
Good luck with the campaign Phil.
Thanks Bill, it’s a mess here in Croydon but also a trend across the country. Many have been dabbling in business ventures and losing taxpayers money in the process. Pretty awful, sadly
bravo ! again this is a building worth saving, both as a good human activity hub
Thanks for this Phil. I’m sharing the film with as many people as possible
Thanks Richard!
Save our library
A suggestion for Croydon Council, like I have made to my local council, Calderdale - get rid of all the non jobs: lived experience officers, healthy lifestyle officers, anything to do with DEI and ESG.
Any savings can be used to fund facilities that the residents want and use, not to pay for woke vanity projects.
