This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the Audi Q5 and the BMW X3.Both the X3 30i and Q5 come with a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The Audi offers a 7 speed automatic transmission with 261 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. The BMW has an 8 speed automatic transmission with 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. BMW offers more engines in the X3, the 3L inline-6 with 382 horsepower, the 30e plug-in hybrid with 288 horsepower. Audi offers the Q5 e plug-in hybrid with 362 horsepower and the 3L turbocharged V6 with 349 horsepower. The X3 is agile with responsive sharp steering. The suspension does not disappoint providing firmness to keep it exciting but not compromising comfort. The Q5 has a comfortable and smooth ride with plenty of power. The steering is lighter than the X3 but still precise and it offers a quiet cabin with an excellent turning radius. The X3 is modernly styled, it’s pleasant and classy looking, the kidney grille has been left untouched for now by the bigger is better BMW designers. It comes standard with LED headlights and taillights, LED foglights and 19” wheels. 20” and 21” are both available. If you want a sportier look, you can add the M Sport package for $3500, that will get you the black trim throughout and the black roof rails. The Audi Q5 has a fresh new look with a clean and sporty design. The large grille has been refined with a thinner outside frame and the LED headlamps get a new daytime running light design and are positioned a bit higher. Both SUVs come with plenty of standard features. The Q5 has a 10.1” touchscreen, the BMW a 10.2” with BMW’s iDrive. They both have Apple Carplay and Android Auto, heated front seats, a leather wrapped steering wheel and a power liftgate. The BMW comes with leather seats and the Audi leather seating surfaces with stitching. The X3 also comes standard with a heated steering wheel and driver seat memory; you have to buy the convenience package for $1,550 to get the driver seat memory, a heated steering wheel and foot activated power tailgate on the Q5. Keep in mind, the X3 has a higher base price than the Q5, so you get some extra features on the BMW.

Your comparison is bang on! My question is, would you spec the Q5 Technik with air suspension? Is the $2500 addition worth the extra comfort for both short and long term ownership?
Great comparison! These two Germans are closely matched and it comes down to preference. When I trade my M340i in a couple of years I’m going to give the X3 M40i a serious look!

Yay for Canadian pricing. I’m so used to seeing USD and it’s so annoying for us Canadians. Great review for cars I’ll never buy but pretend to buy in my head lol.
I also like Q5, because I think Audi does a better job in switch and knobs, and overall interior fit and finish. I have an option to pick one of the 2 vehicle- current generation Q5 (MY 2018) Technik vs base macan (MY2018) with just a Premium package to get basic amenities such as memory seats etc if the price for both in used market is same?

Neither is good enough. Mercedes is the only one giving you a luxury interior and mainstream brands have caught up. These “luxury” brands are relying on brand cache to move metal. Great comparison as always!
I agree.. Audi interior is so dated...BMW is better but Mercedes is way ahead of everyone!

Definitely Audi for me all the way. It's more luxurious and thought out looking. I love that blue color. The X3 may be more powerful but I don't need that. I have no interest in speeding.
It is all about handling and not speeding imho. Plus comparatively bmw is more reliable.

The X3 M4.0 is a reasonable price if you purchase the end of year model and maybe get lucky and get the demo...In the US...and that's what I'm hoping to get next year! You guys have the format nailed down perfectly and your reviews are crisp and clear....Good stuff you....two By the way I like Andrea's summer look....as I said before, Zack, you're a lucky man!
You can’t just say you’d get the 400hp variant and not mention the SQ5. Youre comparing apples and oranges. If you are comparing the v6, the Audi SQ5 would be the choice.
Great comparison. Both the two I’m looking at right now. Also noting BMW requires premium gas. With gas prices now that is something to weigh in.
Andrea tends to match something about the car tested, be it the exterior colour or something interior, or compliment what Zack is wearing.The only thing I can match with her outfit is the red seatbelt release button. Another 👍video.

Audi Q5 for my wife while BMW X5 40i for me... perfect combination
Bmw price does include some maintenance, not the Audi
I find that the Q5 shows its age. It lacks the new interior that Audi introduced in the Q7 (of which I believe the Q3 is also inspired), and the only "innovation" is that ipad looking screen slapped in the middle of the console with very little integration. The exterior refresh is ok but not as sharp as other models in the Audi line-up (I like the bold design of the Q8, but other new models like the S3 or Q3 also have fresher lines). Moreover, I can't get over the fake exhausts on the Q5. I would definitely not go for the Q5 and for the price I would pick the A5 Sportback or indeed the X3 (even though I am not a huge fan of the interior).

@@alexizane9491 2021 X3 30i. Motor is fantastic. We have the upgraded leather and X3 is well equipped. Handling is awesome for an SUV. The infotainment takes some getting use to.
Ugh, my lease on my q5 is up in a couple months. I’m not a fan of the steering at all. I have an x5 35d( that I othat I really prefer. I will go test the x3

The BMW drive for me is unmatched but when it comes down to price and what you get, the audi seems to be the better option. The audi cabin space, while smaller, seems to be more plush and comfortable than the BMW. However, I will say a lot of accessory components on audi feel cheap to me sometimes.....All in all, they are both great cars. I can't make up my mind.
The review is a year old, and last year the Q5 may have been the better value. However, in May 2022 Audi has shipped almost all Q5 without blind spot warning, adaptive cruise control, or navigation due to the chip shortage. The ones I looked at also had pretty basic wheels, and some had a detuned 2.0 4 cylinder engine with less power.
The X3 has all of those features, drives better, but hard to get the Harmon Kardon stereo. The tie breaker for me was that at 6’1” the Q5 fits me awkwardly. I move the seat back all the way but then the door arm rest is too short and my arm doesn’t reach it, plus the touch screen is very far forward and high on the dash, I have to lean forward to reach it. BMW for me this time.

We can only review what is available in the press fleet and usually that means it's the top trim. We can't pick and choose what is in it unfortunately. We get what we get.
I know this may not be politically correct, but with the Audi being made in Mexico, vs the BMW being made in the US, I’m not sure I’m happy paying German Luxury car prices for a car assembled in a low cost labor market. So yes, the Audi is less expensive, but it should be.

So funny---I'm literally choosing this week between the BMW x3 or the Audi X5---both in blue in shown here. But----for pure driving fun I'm leaning towards the X3. Will make final choice next week---waiitng for Volvo to finish my California Lemon Law Buyback on my 2022 Volvo XC 60 which has been in the shop now eight times due to electrical problems---. So----feels like the X3.

Does Audi Q5 require premium gas?
Q5 wins every time. Awesome exterior and interior design. Although I agree the discontinuation of MMI knob is a misstep, its interior remains more attractive than those of the X3. Given I had terrible experience with BMW reliability and customer service, the only reason to choose an X3 over Q5 is the low lease rates. If money is no object, nothing else best Macan GTS and Turbo w/Performance Package in this segment.

For me was actually the other way around, I had a horrible experience with the Audi dealerships around my town, I ended up getting a better service at BMW. Audi was giving be $595 a month for a $50k Q5 while BMW gave me $525 for a $52k X3.

Q5 hybrid is the best and you may get 6700 tax credit in USA. So it will end up same price of a base q5 price.
GLC..mercedes interior is bar none
They are both so nice and just perfect small family vehicles. But for me lately I just fallen in love with BMW cars overall and feel like they been doing their thing.
So, can't find one reviewer that would pick the X3? This seems very biased. As a side note, consumer reports prefers the X3 and finds the BMW more reliable.

The X3 and X4 are lacking in technology and are not currently available with adaptive cruise control. In this luxury mid-size category, how can they now have this available? Every manufacturer offers it except BMW.

RDX Aspec is 15k cheaper, is more spacious, has more power, has more legroom and cargo room, has a superior AWD, has a much better audio system than mid tier x3/q5 and in my honest opinion looks much better than specially with red interior

There is no comparison between the Q5 and X3.
Let’s be honest, only people who doesn’t understand anything about cars or wants to save buy AUDI, BMW is technically at a different level: longitudinal engine and native RWD VS a mechanical solution on the AUDI which you can find on a SKODA.

Plenty of people, BMW is still ahead of Audi and Mercedes in terms of reliability. Still also a better driver. To each it’s own though.
