Resetting zero on a Mitutoyo dial caliper using the "special " tool.

  • I have been meaning to do this video for sometime now having seen people use Mitutoyo calipers with the zero in some really odd places and nobody seems to show how to do it. Please excuse the dirty finger nails, I got them grubby specially for this occasion to give the impression that I actually do do some work now and then.

Thats a neat little trick you've shown us. its such a pain on my other dials to reset it and then mess around trying to eliminate the backlash.
Hopefully I can do this with my new dial calipers that I've just ordered.

    • @chrisstephens6673

Thanks for viewing and commenting, This method is particular to a certain vintage Mitutoyo and may not be any use to other makes. I know what you mean about the backlash systems in other makes, truly a pain to reset once you get them apart. I shall not offer advice on other systems without close inspection and a lot of play.
If you find a simple way to fix other brands, post a video for otherscto learn.

I used the tool differently when a caliper jumped the track. Placing it on zero I would take the tool and insert it in the middle of the the rack under the dial and push it closed. worked every time. no damage was ever reported. (usually Mitutoyos)

I recently bought a 4-inch Mitutoyo dial caliper off eBay.
In the pictures it looked like the needle was misaligned by 0.001". When I got it it was misaligned by 0.005". My guess is it was jerked around along the route, and the seller failed to provide adequate padding.
While it did come with a thin copper metal piece that's made to be used in correcting the misalignment it's good to know that there's a much easier way of doing that.

Good work on the video nice and short and clear. I tried to use the video to square my dial to the "sliding ruler" but when I expose the slot on the bottom, I push on it as hard as I feel comfortable doing, and I detect no movement inside. I'm scared that my particular version of caliper (mitutoyo 505-637-50 made in brazil might have had the insides altered so that this style of reset is no longer present. ive been down that road before, trying to pry open a dial indicator when it was never meant to be pryed open !!!! • @chrisstephens6673
      @chrisstephens6673  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks forcthe comment. You only need to push perhaps half a millimetre to disengage the pinion. This does not work on all Mitutoyo calipers which seems like a bad design flaw on other models.
Removing the glass and the needle can work but it wont take long to wear out the fitting. Using watch makers tools to remove the needle will make things easier/safer but still a limited life situation.

    • @chrisstephens6673

Now you have me there, I just call it a special tool but it is only a bit of bent wire. The wire is something like 0.6 to 0.8mm, although as long as it fits the slot you should be fine, just push it enough to disengage the rack, you can judge that be the depth of the teeth of the rack, no great force is needed. I could imagine that if you bought one from mitutoyo the price would be significant, so literally a paperclip is the probably an option.

Apparently not all mitutoyo dial calipers have that hidden slot . I have a Made in Japan , 300 mm version.
The only markings are "No. 505-635" on the dial face and "T44666-1" etched on one jaw on reverse side.
It began skipping an incremental 0.5mm eery time moved past a certain point about 150mm open. (ie , 20 open / close cycles past that point WOULD HAVE brought indicator back to 12o'clock ) but I decided to clean the gear track WITHOUT first manipulating to 12. ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯ . No good.
I could see any debris on the gear track but cleaner, brushing and ultrasound session eliminated the incremental skip, but now its stuck with 0.5 dial offset.
Can not even get hits on the model number on Mitutoyos' site.
NOTE - while in the ultrasoundic bath, I DID have the calipers open fully , ie only immersed the track section in the bath, NOT the clockworks.
Dried it before closing. So it you want partially good advice, thats it !
Looks like a couple gear track retaining screws also missing , and so the search goes on ...

Thanks for the comment, indeed the feature has apparently been dropped, which unfortunate. Sorry to hear your's doesn't have this feature.
I know they can be pulled apart but it seems like you need three hands to put them together again. The other alternative is to remove the crystal, then the hand and put it back it the right place. There is a but to this though, some types have an anti backlash feature and if this loses registration, as happens when dropped, you will have an unreliable zero.
