When my firstborn was a baby, a very wise, more experienced parent, told me "When your child yells that they hate you -- and they will! -- try to hear it as meaning, "I trust you enough to let my feelings of anger and frustration out, knowing that you won't leave me or punish me for feeling that way." It's made the whole thing much more comfortable to deal with. (I still never let them get away with treating me or anyone else that badly, of course; not that any of them ever tried.)

I never had any Biological Children. I met my GF who had 3 children F-14 F-12 M-10 30 years ago. The older and younger Children treated me like CRAP. After awhile the middle child considered me her DAD and her 3 children call me Grandpa and she always remembers me on Father's Day. She is the only one that I ever help and ignore the other 2. After a long time the other children apologized but since it took a long time I'm not accepting it. The girl in this story is a complete Asshole.
Did you never look at it from the point of view of the kids? You come into their life and in their eyes your trying to replace their dad. Funny. I did all I could as a teen to make my biological parents have an eas time. I went serious into babysitting to make the money that a teen girl needs for t shirts, clothes, music, movies, shows. I earned money to pay for my university books, my bus passes. Because they had to pay for my brother's hockey and baseball, for years.
