I'm in awe of any soldier that fought and lived or died at Tarawa. It was the most savage fighting of the entire war. No way out for either side but to kill the enemy face to face. And Eddie Albert did all that he did while under fire.

I still just can't get why they only awarded him the Bronze star. Please understand, that I am not degrading(or implying that it isn't a great award) the Bronze star in any way. I just feel that for his actions to not just go back once, but over and over, under very heavy fire...
He should have received the Navy Cross or CMH.
Ya'll Take Care and be safe, John

Louis Hayward was awarded the Bronze star as well. And so did my Dad, first Corporal with the 36th infantry, the Texas T-patchers. He was born in the Bronx, but go figure, got into the 36th.These people deserve so much respect for stepping up to the service of their Country. We will never see their like again.

I wonder how he felt while filming the Omaha beach landing scenes with Robert Mitchum for the classic film "The Longest Day"? Must have brought back some memories.

Some other famous actors who served in WW2 and saw action: James Stewart, David Niven, Mel Brooks, Jason Robards, Clark Gable, Paul Newman, Alec Guinness. Honorable mention: Actress Hedy Lamarr, who during WW2 pioneered "frequency hopping" technology which was intended to prevent the electronic jamming of US Navy guided torpedoes, and would ultimately lead to the creation of WiFi.

He was a recipient of the Bronze star not a winner. It's not a contest.

Green acres is the place to be… unless you’re Eddy Albert, and your landing Marines at Tarawa…

Hank Kimble (Alvy Moore)...of Green Acres, also was a Combat Veteran in the Marine Corps on Iwo Jima. Amazing two Combat Veteran's on the same show.
