It can follow source voltage if it is R Load . But if it is RL load it will not follow the source voltage. Because inductance does not allow to do this .
Actual equation is ( Vsin(wt) -Ri = Ldi/dt ) . After the instance the Ri is equals to Vsinwt , Ldi/dt becomes negative(-) because current start decreasing . Hence Ldi/dt becomes negative.
