  • This is more of an informative/instructional video showing the process of checking/adjusting valve clearances on the ULPower 350iS during the 500hr maintenance on the Super701. It is a very simple procedure and allows you to get an easy glimpse of the general health inside your engine.
    It is a bit longer than my usual videos and I do a lot of talking, but I hope it is easy to understand, follow, and enjoy.
    Thanks to David Hart for the cover shot for this video.

    Great build; great explanation of how simple the valve adjustment can be.

    great job showing how to wrench on your motor. I"m a two stroke guy but have nothing against either, I think the problem comes down to not understanding how to work on your own engine. I have almost 80 hours on a single cylinder two stroke hirth and I just replaced the fuel lines out of caution. I feel as confident in my little two stroke as a lycoming or contintential because I learned how to work on my motor just like a ap would.

      Agree completely! I grew up around 2 and 4 strokes , entirely different animals! Properly feed and watered , 2s are just as dependable as 4s. although I believe they require more maintenance more often.

    Well done on explaining “just a little drag” I’ve noticed some people jam the gauge in to make it fit... 😌

      Thats how I was taught by my Dad many moons ago. Doing the valves on my UL260i is an easy job.

    The overlap method is how I adjusted at least a thousand VW and Porsche engines when I had a shop for 15 years. First time I have ever seen it demonstrated. It makes it easy to visualize the cam lobes that affect two cylinders (when overlap the opposite side of the cams are TDC and to be adjusted)
    Like a VW, this kind of engine has much looser tolerances and thicker oils to fill voids and changes due to temp due to dissimilar metal expansion.then modern water cooled automotive engines which have incredibly tight tolerances requiring very thin oils vs air cooled. Note the extremely low viscosity (e.g.0-20wt) of modern tight tolerances engines. Both work reliably well as long as lubrication and temperatures are controlled.

    Still waiting on part 3 of your new prop.

    Excellent video, Jon - I appreciate the detailed explanation! Will you be attending the Zenith Homecoming/Fall Fly-In in Mexico, MO this September?

      Yes, I hope to be there! We need to get a gaggle of Zeniths together to head that way.

      @@TNFlyingFarmer I like the gaggle idea! I plan to fly over on 9/16, weather permitting.

    I agree that the nord lock washers are great, however I have heard of one person who put them on wrong and won't touch them again. Would be nice if you showed them and explained how they work.

    Hey John... what are the terms of your warranty concerning which routine maintenance and adjustments you are permitted to perform? How's the new prop working out? Thanks for the update and info! Blue Skies!

    • @TNFlyingFarmer
      @TNFlyingFarmer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Really no need to do anything other than check the valves and oil changes on these engines. The service manual give a good rundown on the schedule and what needs to be performed. It really is simple though.
      Loving the DUC prop! It is definitely a better performing all-around prop when set for a cruise pitch. Hoping to try out a different blade profile soon, just to compare.

    John. Just wondering whether you use 100LL or mogas?

    • @TNFlyingFarmer
      @TNFlyingFarmer  ปีที่แล้ว

      I almost exclusively use 93 octane 100% mogas. The only time I use 100LL is when it is my only option during longer cross-country flights.

    Do you check the torque on your head bolts? The manual says they are to be checked, I believe every 200 hours....at least in does on my 520iS.

    • @TNFlyingFarmer
      @TNFlyingFarmer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have checked the ones that are easiest to get to. They have been great, so I haven’t checked the others.

    Jon - Whats that piece coming off your oil filter block connected to the oil cooler line? check valve? If so why do you have it installed...? Just curious...

    • @TNFlyingFarmer
      @TNFlyingFarmer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is only an extension to make the 90 degree fitting come out underneath the other 90. Clearance extension only.

    Do you run unleaded auto gas to avoid the lead build up they say happens when using AvGas in UL Power engines?

    • @TNFlyingFarmer
      @TNFlyingFarmer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Luckily I have 93 octane 100% auto gas nearby, so I use it unless I am away on a trip.

      @@TNFlyingFarmer I'm genuinely envious. Best we have in most of Arizona is 91 Octane with 10% alcohol.

      Yes, they specify it to be done cold on the ULP engines.
