Well done Ferrymead! I grew up in Wellington and loved travelling on the 'units' they had their own unique sounds: the whine of the gene-motors and the neat sound the air compressors made, and they were always warm on a cold day.
Well done.Went for a trip to J'Ville on one of these during my last trip to Welly, and thought it was great for it's age-British/NZ built quality. While the Matangis are very comfy,I doubt they will last half as long.Fingers crossed for the new electric trains in Auckland-only 50 years overdue.

Could this unit work on the new lines in Auckland? I know its never run here before but it would be cool to see a vintage electric train on Auckland upgraded system.
if im not mistaken this train was red couloured in the Front right like during the time when it first entered service and from them on they kept refurbishing them right?
Way back when, the first few were blue. Then the red paint came in. Yes, you are correct, the fronts....or rears if was moving away from you were also red, but then the fronts got painted yellow, as yellow is easy to see from a distance, making them more visible at level crossing etc

I really miss riding the electric multiple unit on Johnsonville line here in Wellington. This is a great video.
Also I personally think they fit in nicely on the Johnsonville line
Good effort. Well done to all the volunteers.
Thanks for sharing this! It's good to see people paying attention to all aspects of railway history.

Nice! The last time I went anywhere by train in the Christchurch area, the ECs were still in regular service on the Lyttleton line.
Enjoyed being part of the day and holding the ribbon ;-)
Also Auckland electrification is utilizing 25kv AC, but NOT 1500v DC that D/DM units used for.
Is this an electric preserved line. I take it the catenary is energised at 1500v DC?
Excellant.

Was Ian Welch there, I think I can hear his voice at 4:45 (the deep voice)?

Auckland's railways use 25kv AC. This EMU operates off a 1500v DC supply
