  • Management of the University of the Free State says it is investigating an alleged incident of racism at its main campus in Bloemfontein.
It's alleged that a white student referred to a black student as a baboon during a lecture on the 14th of this month.
The lecturer is alleged to have labelled the statement as a joke.
The university says it condemns all forms of racial actions and that it views the matter in a very serious light.
Let's bring in SABC News Reporter Makgala Masiteng.

South Africa has a deeply complex and painful history of racial discrimination, apartheid, and racial violence. This history has left lasting scars on the nation and its people. It is within this historical context that any racial incident should be viewed. The use of derogatory racial slurs, such as calling someone a "baboon," carries with it a painful legacy of dehumanisation and racial hatred.
Universities, as institutions of higher learning, have a responsibility to foster an inclusive and respectful environment for all students, regardless of their race or background. In the South African context, many universities have had to confront their own histories of racism and exclusion, as they were often complicit in enforcing apartheid policies.
The response of the lecturer, who dismissed the incident as a joke, raises concerns about the institution's commitment to addressing racial issues and promoting a safe and respectful learning environment. It's essential for universities to have clear policies and mechanisms in place to address incidents of racism and discrimination promptly and effectively.
Furthermore, such incidents highlight the need for ongoing education and awareness programs that encourage students and staff to confront and challenge racial biases and stereotypes. Universities can play a pivotal role in promoting reconciliation and healing in post-apartheid South Africa by actively addressing instances of racism and fostering an environment of tolerance and understanding.
In conclusion, the incident involving the use of a racial slur in a university setting should not be taken lightly, especially in South Africa with its painful history of racial oppression. It underscores the importance of universities actively addressing such incidents and working toward a more inclusive and respectful academic community that acknowledges the historical context and seeks to heal the wounds of the past.

      1. Your statement is assuming that the black person in this case was doing something stupid or rather s/he is a child of the person calling him/her a baboon ! and that is a wrong premise to go from. 2. you can call your kids whatever but don't go calling other people's kids things they don't want to be called simple ! 3. don't justify nonsense because we will all around doing things we should be doing under the pretence that we do it to our kids e.g. if I abuse my kids must I also come abuse yours just because I do it to my kids for whatever reason ? think deeply before uttering word or typing them.
