I think it’s worth mentioning that Sina Döering, drum superstar, has a special quality that goes unrecognized. Curiously, it makes me love her work all that much more, and it’s this: She doesn’t perform for the camera. That seems like an odd thing to say about someone who video tapes her truly outstanding drum performances. But here’s the thing: She makes her music not about her; she makes it about the music! She doesn’t stare at the camera, acting cutesy. Her performances never comes off as, “Look at me; see how entertaining I am.” To me, Sina is one of the most brilliant, down-to-earth musicians you’ll ever have the pleasure of seeing. No ‘glamming it up’ for the audience; the spotlight is not on her looks or how enticing she can make herself appear. No, the focus is on her technique, her timing, her precision, her extraordinary skill, and her intense concentration on musical perfection. She leaves her ego at home; she comes to work prepared to make the best music she possibly can, leaving flamboyant personal extravagance out it. Music! I think we can all agree Sina sets the gold standard for musical excellence. She’s cute, but she doesn’t act cute. When we perceive her ability and who she is, something like that counts. She’s the real deal. She deserves to be admired for making music about the music and not about herself. My god, woman-“Brava! Brava!”
