    Why is Fd positive if it's pointing down?

      I think it is because we consider the point not the mass , if you think in this way yes the F that is downward is pulling the point downward but if you think about the mass the spring is pulling the mass up !! so we see the spring is always opposing (hooks law) , it pull mass up and pull the point that springs meet up down .

      cos45 = sqrt(2)/2 = .707... and the force is negative in x direction
