Just a great vid. How humble is Iwan Thomas? Hope everyone watching realizes what a tremendous runner he was, and yet there's not a shade of any kind of arrogance or jealousy. Just class.
He's interviewing the greatest 400m runner of all time and a completely different level of athlete...Most people on Earth have never heard of Iwan Thomas
@@malligrub Most people on Earth have never heard of Michael Johnson either although he has a legitimate claim to be the greatest track and field athlete ever (not saying he is, just a claim).
tbh I think it's harder to start out fast than to finish fast. I always get super nervous and I need to learn how to use that to my advantage to get a good start. I absolutely HATE when people talk about the 400 like it's easy, makes me want to smack them a few times.
Well you have to consider when starting a 400m that it's so fucking essential to start out fast, cause you can never end faster than you can start out. After 8 seconds lactic acid will build up in your muscles and force you to go slower, so to take advantage of the first 8 seconds you need to start out really fast to help give your muscles less of a strain to work up to that speed after they are being fatigued and to give you more momentum to work with on the back stretch into the final 200.
It's really nice to see two amazing athletes who competing more than a decade ago talk about running techniques for the 400m Track and Field event. Much inspirational for us, thanks for the upload!
For me I get out of the blocks real quick, then cruise and sprint the straight, then cruise and full out sprint the last straight. I have ran it for 3 years now. Freshman year I was unathletic and ran a 70. Sophomore year got 58, and now I'm at a 54 aiming for 51 next year, and I like my method
Callum Hurst thanks for the motivation I'm a Sophomore play football and used to 40yards not 400 or 200m. So I'm nervous because I run a 70 but know I'll get better. I also lift like a religion lol.
I'm 16, I run a 55.42s 400m. I am very slow at starting my 400m, still need to train myself to get a good acceleration in at the start. Very good tips, I will be working on these.
I’m a Freshman and have only ran two races this year and I ran a 52.98 trying to get that down to the 50’s still have 7 meets to do it. As long as I can run because I’m failing 3 classes rn
Michael Johnson and Bolt are my frikken heros. But my 400 strategy is first 100 you go 80 or 85%. Then maintain until 180 meters and THEN(!) you have to pull of the gas a little bit. That usually puts me in the lead so i can save for a vicious last 100. But you slow down to 65 or 70% until 280-285 meters. Then gradually pick it up to 90% by 325 or so so you can sprint like hell if someone tries to catch you.
5k to 1600 is not necessarily an easy swing. The benefit of having any distance background, CC races, is that you son already has some idea of pace. In the 1600 pace is vital to a young athlete. If he can learn how to run even splits for the 4 lap race, he can then work on making each of those laps stronger and faster. Coachterrywood@gmail.com if you have more questions. Please ask!
First make sure you’re a really good shape. If you can try to run at least a mile a day. After that work on your speed 100m 200m and your foot speed. The faster you are in general the easier you can run the 400
+jade lee Don't listen to him, he's just a little man with no life who just likes to sit at home and ruin the lives of others because he doesn't have one himself. Be proud that you are actually putting out the work, while he's sitting on his butt complaining all day! Prove him wrong!!

Go fast for the first five steps then coast off. Once you get the 150 meter accelerate and pray.
It’s the hardest and most impressive race in track. It’s a sprint but you need to pace yourself

Usain Bolt is awesome but Johnson will always be my all time favorite runner.
how has life been after 2 months
For someone who used to specialize in 400m, there was a lot of tips in this video I would have found useful a number of years ago.
For me I get out of the blocks real quick, then cruise and sprint the straight, then cruise and full out sprint the last straight.

+Tyson Sprinter he sprints off the blocks cruises the curves and sprints the straight aways
Conor Warren I don't know how I was confused at what he said. That was so long ago. Thanks though.
+Tyson Sprinter lol no problem I decided to reply even though u commented last year

Its a funny visual to imagine Micheal Johnson turning around and cheering the other runners into the finish line after winning the race.
its cool they know each other
Not really😂 to Michael Johnson, he’s just another guy that he beat and then hugged at the end of the race
