In 1983 my mom needed a car so I went to the Sheriff's car auction in Orlando and got her a used Grand Fury patrol car for $500.00 . It ran real good and I painted it all white . It proved too fast for her and at every stop sign or stop light she would leave a big burnout . After being pulled over several times and a couple of tickets I took the car back and got her a Chevy Citation .

@@garymckee8857 I came home from the hospital in a 1963 Plymouth Sport Fury, so I believe it. Sometimes parents bought the oddest cars for the oddest reasons. My parents bought a Trans Am after we saw Smokey and the Bandit and my parents (actually my mother) joked that she "liked the car with the bird on the hood". So, we bought one. It was actually my father's 15th wedding anniversary gift to my mother that year.

Here is something coincidental as it involves the same makes you got for your mom. In 1982 I bought my father's 1977 Gran Fury Sport Suburban wagon equipped with a 400 cid V8. It was the same car I learned to drive before getting my driver's license. After owning the Gran Fury for 5 years I sold it to a friend then replaced it with my mother's 1980 Citation. I did end up totalling the Citation in a single vehicle collision then went for years without owning a car. In 2007 I found an 06 Ford Focus for my mom which she drove until she gave up driving. I now have that mint condition Focus which I inherited from my mother's estate and it only has a mileage reading of 40000.

that "special order" tag could also be a bunch of deleted items, rather than accessory items. For PD or Taxi service it was common to delete rear radio speakers, window cranks, and similar upscale items like padded arm rests. In this case it was an AC delete, but looked like a police car, which tells me it probably saw meter maid service. In that case it also likely had a base dashboard instead of certified speedo with full gauges.

No, that's incorrect. This car was assembled in Belvidere, IL not Newark, DE. "D" in that spot of the VIN is Belvidere, IL, "F" was Newark, DE. Yes, Unity is still in business in Chicago, IL and still provides spotlights for fire/rescue and police equipment even today. They moved into their present location at 1260 N Clybourn Ave. Chicago, IL 60610 in 1961.
We got the VIN, we win: P for Plymouth Gran Fury, K for Police, 41 for four door sedan, K for 360 V8 with two barrel, 6 for 1976 model year, D for Belvidere, IL assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Belvidere, IL plant opened in 1965 and still operates under Stellantis today. The Newark, DE plant closed in 2008.
We got the tag, we can brag: E62 for outside chrome rearview mirror LH, H41 for heater with upper vent, S41 for rear sway bar, Y39 for special order, KB8 for Starlight Blue exterior paint, A1L3 for some sort of Gray interior trim, U for USA spec vehicle, F33 for LH spotlight, left side pillar (so the light or at least the pre-upfit for it was factory issued), F38 for roof reinforcement, R11 for AM radio, E57 for 360 V8 with two barrel (E58 would be a 360 V8 with four barrel), D36 for A727 automatic transmission, 225 for Wednesday February 25, 1976 production/scheduled ship date, and yes SPECIAL ORDER for a fleet/special order, something unique. Correct, H51 would be for single AC and heater unit with manual controls and H53 is for automatic temperature control. There are other codes, but they are rusty/hard to read without cleaning the tag.
No, that's not correct. The "R" body from 1979 to 1981 would "replace" these models after a one-year hiatus in 1978 and many would do fleet and municipal use. The "R" body products were the last ones made at the Lynch Road, Detroit, MI facility before it closed in April 1981. Three years away from bankruptcy (1979), not two years (1978). Yes, you can hear the Congressional hearings with Mr. Iacocca telling the lawmakers that "You're going to pay anyway. If you don't bail us out, you'll pay welfare, job retraining, food stamps, etc." Correct, it was believed that if Chrysler failed, it would be a national security issue because Chrysler had military contracts with the US government at the time.
Yes, the vinyl was chosen to be easy to clean, but mostly for wear and easy replacement when it wore out. That vinyl was pretty standard and most trim shops stocked it or could easily order it. It tended to be a little higher grade than the civilian quality material of the same vintage. A Merry Christmas and happy holiday season to all.

We lived in a cop neighborhood and mocked the guys who were stuck with the delete models that came with 318s and 360s back in 74 , sad until you saw the B bodies powered by 225s . Our used model was the full house pursuit that included a skid plate welded under the K frame . The upper A arm covers were double layer fiber glass . The 4 barrel 400 had double wall exhaust manifolds and a huge radiator because it had Air . Besides the Hemi torqueflite it also had 3 inch pipes with the street Hemi mufflers . It was an un breakable burn out machine that could dig trenches in asphalt . After we replaced the warped ThermoBog with a Holley spreadbore it could actually idle smoothly and accelerate without backfire or stumbling .

Yes, likely is, maybe a staff car or a special unit (mounted, special events, chaplain, etc.) as it's pretty bare on equipment. My friend was an NYPD cop from 1983 to 1986 and then he became a fireman in 1986. He drove the Gran Fury M body era cars and said that they had the fuel tank of a go-kart and turning radius that was horrific. You'd have to do a million K turns to go after someone. They did have AC, but the members would remove the RH vent and put the portable radio in there. It fit perfectly. My friend retired this year and moved to FL.

Police chaplains that are issued cars seem to be something relegated to NYC and maybe a few other Eastern Seaboard cities, as I have never heard of them anywhere else. In many ways, I think it is somewhat political, as I know this guy, if he tells his congregation to vote for X, 99% of them will do so I think the car which is a great way to get through stuck traffic is more of a reward for turning out that vote than a necessity.

Steve, In early Spring of 1974, during High School Years; i bought a 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner for $385, while the gasoline crisis was happening... In fall of 1975: too go to College at OSU, I sold it for $850 and a 1972 "C Body" White Plymouth Fury EX-Ohio State Highway Patrol Car; with torque flight transmission failure... I never drove it... but once home and the car did run out fast, after another car push it up to speed... It had a 400 4v carb and a very remarkable, huge cased, basket ball sized, non-Chrysler; added at the factory alternator... Front Disc brakes, 15" Steel Wheels, W/Baby Moon Hub Caps and mostly hints in the interior of a Police package: heavy duty seats, rubber flooring, larger dome lights, side spot lights, AC and factory AM Radio... Still think about that Alternator today ;however; it would be very antiquated by today's standards: with LED light packages, huge improvements on smaller amp powered window motors & windshield wipers and ect... PS: The Kids today: go to... for their boom busting car stereos, is "Ohio Generator" Tom builds and modify new factory fit, size & oringial cased, car alternators; producing over 300 Amps plus, he even runs bench test and send printed results on the alternator... !! lol need one for my Camper R/V conversion... !! 😉

    • @googleusergp
      @googleusergp ปีที่แล้ว

Those big alternators are still around and even though every one adds LEDs on fire/rescue/police, etc. equipment, there are more of them in the past (as "LEDs don't draw much" as the hackneyed expression goes) but they add up. Plus today's command centers and other municipal equipment are "offices on wheels" and have a lot of communication equipment and other equipment which takes some huge power to run. 320A alternators from Leece-Neville are not uncommon, in fact they are often optional on commercial chassis. Custom chassis like fire apparatus often have 430A+ alternators from the likes of Niehoff and Delco-Remy.

Hello Jeffrey Bond, Thanks for watching and writing. Thar basketball of an alternator was part of the Police Pursuit package and was made for Chrysler Corp. by Leece-Neville (no relation to Aaron). I have one on my 1962 Dart ex-Texas police car. It is not certain where / when these massive alternators were first installed on Chrysler Corp. police models but I'm thinking it was done at the factory - and not by an upfit garage or the end-user law enforcement outfit. Most likely the SPECIAL HANDLING fender tags seen on many police models trigger installation of the big alternator plus a BUNCH of other upgrades at the factory (perhaps on a niche line). Thanks again for watching and writing. And Merry Christmas! -Steve Magnante

Hello, Thanks for watching and writing. Those "Low Gear Lockouts" were to prevent non-mechanically-inclined drivers from manually down-shifting into First at too high a road speed and lunching the engine. I spotted another one in 2019 aboard a very unusual 1974 Ford Torino Iowa State Police TWO-door that had the Q-code 351 Cleveland "CJ" and a Low Gear Lockout on the column-shifted C6 automatic. A rare, rare TWO-DOOR Torino cop car with the certified 140 speedo, dual exhaust, thick braided steel body ground straps for the radio and so much more. It was featured on an episode of Roadkill's Junkyard Gold. To see it I think you'll need to subscribe to Motor Trend's APP or whatever they're doing this week with the online content. It's in an episode called "Cars of the Cops and Robbers" or something like that. Thanks again for watching and writing. -Steve Magnante

Merry Christmas! I had a '77 Gran Fury that had been a New York State Police back in '84 while I was in HS. I bought it off the guy who had bought it at auction (still had the Dunlap patrol tires on it). I always thought mine had been set up for interstate duty as it never had a cage or lights on the roof and the suspension was VERY stiff. It had the 440 underhood, true dual exhaust, and no AC. with a 3.23 sure grip 9 1/4 out back. In trying to remove as much unused wiring from the removed equipment, I managed to short something out and the dash caught fire one day while driving it. I was a broke kid, so I saved the drivetrain and junked the rest....... MAN do I miss that car! 😭

I have a 78 B body Monaco police car I am trying to fix up. It was a county detectives car in WI, and thorugh sheer luck it went to auction to a guy that only used it to pull a summer camper. So it is basically rust free in one of the most salted up states in the country.
It needs a windshield. There are ZERO of these cars in my state for parts. Even the most devout Mopar guys don't really know anything about the 4 doors and I get both yes and no answers when I ask if the windshield is the same all the way back to 71 when they started the coke bottle body for the b body 4 doors.
The Dodge police cars could be had with whatever options were available also. Not all of them had rubber floors. I have seen other detective versions with the "upgrade" interior with the wide two spokeish steering wheel. Mine has the "sporty" 3 spoke. Same with AC, carpet, etc. Mine had AC(it is gone) and was equipped with an aftermarket cruise control unit, apparently the county garage added it for when someone had to take the car to Madison.
    Cop goodies usually include:
Front discs, usually one inch bigger then the other optional discs
heavy duty rear end, usually 9.25 traction lock with 3.23 gears
    140mph speedo
    Bigger torsion bars
    Oil cooler
    trans cooler
Generally one inch bigger wheels then standard, though many years that was also an option. Police rims are usually 15x7 on the b body
Engine could be anything from a 360 to a 400 to a 440. (mine is supposed to be a 400 4bbl but the engine is not fixable, cracks. Got a smokin deal on a 1969 383 to put in)
Depending on the year there may have been differences in the leaf spring count or sway bars. This seems to be a big variation from what I have seen, but it might also be people swapping things around and steeling parts etc. Father in law bought a 74 charger back when it was less then a year old and previous owner had already swapped police front brakes onto it, so this leads to inconsistency with people understanding what is factory or not.
People ask why I bother with a 4 door and I respond "when did you see one last?" plus a 4 door is a lot more fun when you have a bunch of buddies and beer and golf clubs to tote around. Too bad there is no aftermarket. And no one else seems to care to try to save them. And there is even less Mopar aftermarket. Oh well, it will do some amazing burn outs on the way to the golf course once I drop the engine back in next year, even if it is missing a few trim pieces
