    “Careless realism costs souls.”
That’s a phrase I consider one of my life mottos. No matter how many people say there’s no place for it in adult life, we _need_ imagination to stay human and to not go insane- now more than ever, I think.

    • @seanobrien276
      @seanobrien276 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

I'll go further and say that one of the worst things any adult can do is forsake their inner child (or have it forcibly destroyed by society). Imagination is a big part of it, but it's also because children can find joy in the most mundane things--like taking a walk outside, for example. There's lots to see and learn from the surrounding world, but most adults can no longer do this because they lost their inner child and the curiosity and openness that comes with it. It's the adults who can grow up while still retaining their inner child who can overcome the most brutal hardships in life---myself being one of them, as someone who's survive a lifetime of severe trauma and experience that'd kill most people.
And yeah, this is way more important now than it has ever been for humanity. As things stand, many people are going to experience a similar degree of hardship that I had to endure alone--and most are not going to be able to handle it. Therapy and professional support cannot take the place of one's inner child, and the capacity to rebuild one's own life and oneself after trauma razes them to the ground.

@@javibm6002because they’ve gone back on OP’s words: EFMB and Human Nature are Tuomas attempting to be “serious.”
Also he’s kind of a hypocrite, saying that Anette was “out of line” for talking on her blog about being replaced on the tour for her pregnancy when he’s aired his dirty laundry with not one but *TWO* singers now (both in open letters and songs). Definite lack of “emotional maturity” or whatever bs reason he made up to appease all of you and get someone he can control.

    "Careless realism costs souls."
As a writer and fan of "the arts," that line sort of blew me away. Not sure better words could be offered to an aspiring poet or artist of any sort at the beginning of their journey. There are several layers of meaning there, but this one I'll tuck away for later. ❤

  • @FFXI_Addict

"Dear child, stop working, go play. There's no fear in a dream."
I use to wake up late every day after my military service. I was so tired of being responsible, I couldn't handle it any longer. Remained that way for many years.
Only in the last few years have I begun to wake up at 5AM every day now. I spend every day trying to validate my continued existence after my father's death, for which I was his caretaker for 12 years until he died.
Whenever I listen to this song and hear those words, I can only uncontrollably cry at the thought of my own lost innocence. I try to just "go play" every day, but only end up wallowing in depression if I feel I haven't worked hard enough. Then I overwork myself until my muscles are torn, body weak beyond comprehension, to wake up the next day and convince myself "it's okay. You can rest just for today." I never do though.
Sometimes I'm afraid I'll work myself to death, but then the self-deprication overwhelms me into working, still.
I literally need to hear this verse to remind myself to be a human being. And that it's okay sometimes to just... stop.

I would say it means: even though son has comitted a crime a mother is the person who sees the side of him suffering in jail and still wants to be protective. If you think about it most of these verses in this song are full of strong emotional antitheses and, speaking of myself, make you cry.

Up until this day, everytime I see the winter's first snowflake falling from the night sky, I can immediately hear the haunting music box melody played at the very beginning of this musical journey. And that's the moment when I swipe the dust off the old gramophone and enter this journey once again. :)
Even now, after Floor Jansen's joined the band and a whole new Nightwish presented us with Endless Forms ..., I still consider Imaginaerum as their absolutely best album. I sincerely doubt if any of their next concept albums can make such a GEm as this plentiful, harmonious, vibrant and heart-touching story, told parallelly with almost perfectly arranged symphony and truly perfect poetry.

As far as I understand, Toumas (songwriter) was suffering from depression and this song actually saved him from killing himself. He basically wrote this in his depression. Tormented and depressed minds often create masterpieces. For example this song and Van Gogh's painting.

The nightingale is still locked in the cage
The deep breath I took still poisons my lungs
An old oak sheltering me from the blue
Sun bathing on its dead frozen leaves
A catnap in the ghost town of my heart
She dreams of storytime and the river ghosts
Of mermaids, of Whitman's and the Ride
    Raving harlequins, gigantic toys
A song of me a song in need
    Of a courageous symphony
A verse of me a verse in need
Of a pure-heart singing me to peace
All that great heart lying still and slowly dying
All that great heart lying still on an angelwing
All that great heart lying still
    In silent suffering
Smiling like a clown until the show has come to an end
    What is left for encore
Is the same old Dead Boy's song
    Sung in silence
All that great heart lying still and slowly dying
All that great heart lying still on an angelwing
A midnight flight into Covington Woods
A princess and a panther by my side
These are Territories I live for
I'd still give my everything to love you more
A song of me a song in need

    Sung in silence
All that great heart lying still and slowly dying
All that great heart lying still on an angelwing
    A silent symphony
A hollow opus one, two, three
Sometimes the sky is piano black
    Piano black over cleansing waters
    Resting pipes, verse of bore
    Rusting keys without a door
Sometimes the within is piano black
    Piano black over cleansing waters
All that great heart lying still and slowly dying
All that great heart lying still on an angelwing
All that great heart lying still and slowly dying
All that great heart lying still on an angelwing
I see a slow, simple youngster by a busy street
With a begging bowl in his shaking hand
Trying to smile but hurting infinitely
    Nobody notices
    I do, but walk by
An old man gets naked and kisses a model-doll in his attic
    It's half-light and he's in tears
When he finally comes his eyes are cascading
I see a beaten dog in a pungent alley
    He tries to bite me
All pride has left his wild drooling eyes
I wish I had my leg to spare
    A mother visits her son,
Smiles to him through the bars
    She's never loved him more
An obese girl enters an elevator with me
    All dressed up fancy
A green butterfly on her neck
    Terribly sweet perfume deafens me
    She's going to dinner alone
That makes her even more beautiful
    I see a model's face on a brick wall
A statue of porcelain perfection beside a violent city kill
    A city that worships flesh
The first thing I ever heard
Was a wandering man telling his story
It was you, the grass under my bare feet
The campfire in the dead of the night
The heavenly black of sky and sea
    It was us
    Roaming the rainy roads
    Combing the gilded beaches
Waking up to a new gallery of wonders every morn
Bathing in places no-one's seen before
    Shipwrecked on some matt-painted island
Clad in nothing but the surf
    Beauty's finest robe
    Beyond all mortality we are
Swinging in the breath of nature
In early air of the dawn of life
A sight to silence the heavens
I want to travel where life travels
    Following its permanent lead
Where the air tastes like snow music
Where grass smells like fresh-born Eden
I would pass no man, no stranger, no tragedy or rapture
I would bathe in a world of sensation
    Love, Goodness, and Simplicity
(While violated and imprisoned by technology)
The thought of my family's graves was the only moment
I used to experience true love
    That love remains infinite
As I'll never be the man my father is
How can you "just be yourself"
When you don't know who you are?
Stop saying "I know how you feel"
How could anyone know how another feels?
Who am I to judge a priest, beggar, whore, politician, wrongdoer?
I am, you are, all of them already
Dear child, stop working, go play
    Forget every rule
There's no fear in a dream
"Is there a village inside this snowflake?"
    A child asked me
"What's the color of our lullaby?"
I've never been so close to truth as then
    I touched its silver lining
Death is the winner in any war
Nothing noble in dying for your religion
    For your country
    For ideology, for faith
    For another man, yes
    Paper is dead without words
    Ink idle without a poem
All the world dead without stories
    Without love and disarming beauty
    Careless realism costs souls
    Ever seen the Lord smile?
All the care for the world made Beautiful a sad man?
Why do we still carry a device of torture around our necks?
Oh, how rotten your pre-apocalypse is
All you bible-black fools living over nightmare ground
I see all those empty cradles and wonder
    If man will ever change
I, too, wish to be a decent manboy
    But all I am
    Is smoke and mirrors
Still given everything, may I be deserving
    And there forever remains
That change from G to E minor

This man is probably the only one who truly understands me , who i am, what i would want for my fellow human beeing,s , what i go through in life, and so on ! if it weren,t for this man (gosh this will sound emo) i,d probably would not be here anymore, Its strange that a man like tuomas can alter your perception in so many ways ! I,m glad he did ! i see life very differently now ! I hope some people will recognize the message in this song , for we are the only one,s who can make change happen !!

One day I was wondering how lucky we are, all life beings, since we are able to feel, to care for each other. And somehow I found out this wouldn't have been the case if we were all perfect. It was the moment I accepted I was not divine and even loved this fact. I thought the Lord couldn't be happy because of perfection and has nothing to worry about or maybe because got (somehow) tired after trying so hard to arrange everything as closer to perfection as possible. And now, reading the lyrics of this song, a smile rose on my face when I heard these:
    "Careless realism costs souls;
    Ever seen the Lord smile?
All the care for the world made Beautiful a sad man?"

Annette still stays one of my favourite singers. Nightwish was my biggest parts in healing from a nervous breakdown.

You're religion is what you believe. If you have a moral code, if you have something worth living for, it's what you believe. There IS something noble in living, and dying for what you hold to be worth living and dying for. And if that happens to be rooted in love for another and living or dying for anothers sake, there is absolutely nobility in that. Beyond this, I can nearly agree with all the lyrics here but I had to pause when they said there was "no nobility" in dying for a religion. What if that religion's core is love, and you're dying for another man willingly, freely? Whether you agree or not, believe.. or not, there is nobility in that.
