Is Protein Powder Bad For You? | Acne, Hair Loss and Kidney Damage

  • Many people worry whether using protein powder accelerates kidney damage, hair loss and acne. Here's a look at what the science tells us about these questions:
    00:00 Intro
    00:30 Kidney Damage
People who already have kidney disease are often advised to follow a low protein diet. This is because eating protein can increase the filtration rate, and therefore put extra pressure on the kidney. In the long term, there is some research that suggests that a high protein diet may make kidney damage worse in people who already have kidney disease. But just because something is true in people who already have kidney disease, doesn't mean that it also applied to people who are healthy.
Healthy kidneys have an incredible ability to adapt. We know that people can live with one kidney because a healthy kidney is easily able to adapt to a higher workload without any consequence.
A recent study specifically that looked at the impact of a high protein diet in healthy people, found no negative effect of a high protein diet on kidney function:
    02:10 Hair Loss
Hair loss in men occurs because of a combination of genetics and the effect of testosterone. In men, testosterone is converted into DHT in the hair follicles. In men who are genetically at risk, testosterone converts large hair follicles into to small hair follicles that produce thin hair.
I couldn't find any direct research into protein intake and hair loss. So to answer the question, I looked for indirect evidence that would link protein and hair loss. Since testosterone is a major driving factor for hair loss, if a high protein diet increases testosterone levels, that could link protein intake and hair loss. A couple of small studies suggest that protein intake doesn't increase testosterone levels, so as far as the research goes, it is unlikely that protein powder causes hair loss.
    03:41 Acne
Acne occurs due to a combination of genetics, normal skin bacteria, immune function and sensitivity to hormones. Sebaceous glands in the skin produce an oily substance called sebum, that normally lubricates the skin. In people who have acne, excess sebum clogs up skin pores and leads to inflammation.
Hormones such as testosterone, DHT and Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF) all increase the activity of sebaceous glands, and could therefore make acne worse. As I mentioned earlier, protein intake probably doesn't increase testosterone levels. There is some low quality evidence that dairy products may increase IGF levels and therefore accelerate acne in those people who are at risk. To further support this claim, there are case reports that whey protein made acne worse in a handful of patients.
So it is possible that whey protein may make acne worse. A possible remedy for this is to use soy or plant based protein if you have severe acne.

I drink protein shake with almond milk . I agree with you that drinking cow milk is more likely harmful than the protein powder itself . The ability to break down the lactose gets more difficult as we age this often causes the stomach pains and bloating . I am also pretty convinced that modern day farming techniques render any nutritional benefits of milk useless . You end up just consuming empty calories and agitating the stomach .

I buy malic acid, creatine, caffeïne tablets, ZMA and l-arginine seperatly, so i can make sure i get a sufficiënt dose at half the price of an expensive pre that doesnt even do shit except for giving you itchy skin with the beta-alanine

I am in my 30s and was recently diagnosed with type 2 Rosacea, in my teenage years and 20s I did have bad acne which required a lot of treatment from dermatologists, and it can be common that rosacea occurs in the 30s following this. Rosacea, along with many other skin diseases (Acne, eczema, psoriasis etc) are known to be connected to what is happening in the gut microbiome. Whey Protein powders, especially hydrolized and isolate whey powders (which I used heavily for 10 years) are known to be particularly fast acting (great for after a workout) they spike insulin very high and very fast, while doing this they also cause a lot of internal inflammation in all people, but this becomes an issue particularly for people who may have an underlying sensitivity or intolerance to dairy! In my case, this has been the cause of inflammation in my gut microbiome, and therefore an imbalance, leading to skin problems. It also explains why I have always had a pink/red tone to my face and people would always ask me "have you caught the sun" actually, it was my whey protein shakes flaring my skin up! as soon as I cut out Whey proteint, and started using plant based powders this made a massive difference to my skin! (I also avoid other dairy now as well) - this has also helped with joint pain and other inflammation in my body as well as ending constant fatigue and brain fog - meaning I can now train better! Listen to your body and look out for signs of what is happening in your body, it can sometimes be something as delicious and simple as a protein shake causing issues

I experiment with my body, and I noticed when I consume cheese & dairy I get so many big white bumps on my chin. It’s only when I consume cheese. So I drink spearmint tea everyday because there is something in dairy that cause my body to produce an over abundance of the male hormone which causes hormonal acne on the chin/jaw line area. Some people don’t have these issues but I noticed for me I may be allergic to dairy or something I stay away from it

I’m 17, I used to drink whey protein shakes once a day. I’ve always had some acne but it wasn’t too severe. After a month or so of drinking whey, my face broke out over and over again. I talked to my doctor about it and they said whey protein contains lots of soy which is an estrogen, the higher amounts of estrogen in my body was causing these breakouts. Everyone is different but this is just a heads up for young men like me who are thinking of trying whey.

I have noticed that I have got a lot more acne since taking protein shakes whilst the rest of my diet has stayed consistent. I already drink milk which gave me a bit of acne but I only got more after I regularly took shakes. But again that's me personally and how I work, not to say its the same for others

Well some months ago I started using a vegan protein and I saw better results, no bad diggestive problems, acne didn' got worse, my overall mood was fine. About some weeks ago I started using a isolated whey protein, my acne got really bad (like huge pimples and a lot of them too), I have a sensitive stomach and it gave me bad diggestive problems, I feel bloated all the time, also my mood got way worse (but IDK if it's related). I rarely eat dairy food unless heavy cream or cheese every once in a while.

I am suffering from DHT hair loss but I controlled it by taking finasteride . From few days , I am taking protein shake after my gym workout . I noticed that my hair thickness started reducing gradually . And now my hair loss has been accelerated . So I conclude that
Protein shake could accelerate hair loss to those who have sensitivity to DHT .

I'm kind of shocked to notice your second point. I always thought Testosterone and protein are responsible for hair growth.
That's what I always read online.
    Is that really true?

    • @vittocrazi
      @vittocrazi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

i know im very late. but organisms works on homeostasis. wich in short is they balances out what you give it to make it work toward a prefered balance. however, this doesnt mean it can take any ammount of anything. and there are threshholds in wich the balance starts to fail. In the lower threshold you have malnutrition. in wich the body lacks certain things in order to balance things out correctly. the upper threshold could be considered "poisoning". in this case, the body recives more than it can safely manage (sometimes these are upper thresholds so low we straight up call them toxic, like cyanide).
so in the same way a plant's most limiting nutrient is usually nitrogen, but giving it too much nitrogen can kill the plant, the human body needs protein to function, but if yyou give it way too much (lets say threefold or more than it needs), then the body wont be able to safely handle it anymmore and will start experiencing adverse effects.
So yes. protein can be responsible for hair growth, but produce the opposite effect if overdone. same with testosterone.
There are people that have gone through medical complications because they drank way too much water, even.

For me increasing protein intake decreased my hair loss and made it more thicker. I started having my hair back full and healthy with 1gram protein per body weight in lb. Before I use to have less and had hair loss but it reversed after having more protein.

    • @prateek3844

So less protein can also impact into hair loss. Make sure to have enough protein for better skin, cell production, hair, and muscles :) so please do not fall for things that have no studies or research. This video is totally based on hypothesis.

As someone with heavy acne, if you struggle with acne, 100% try cutting out dairy products from your diet for a few weeks.
I personally experience a bump in acne if I consume dairy. I know so many people who say the same thing. One guy just switched out the milk he drank with his weigh powder for oat milk and saw a difference.
Generally with acne, experience with your diet. There are many things that can enhance it, dairy, gluten, soy and many more. Read up on it and try some things

I was on a high protein diet beginning of the year and was taking whey protein shakes and protein bars and protein snacks etc.
My skin has always been clear from acne, never eeever suffered from acne but because of this diet my face was COVERED in acne. It was like ridiculous. It wasn’t immediate though, the problem started like 3 months into the diet and it’s been taking me months to get my skin back to where it was (not there yet).
Not saying that every one will experience this side effect, but if you have an intolerance to milk I’d go for vegan protein powders.

If you are lactose intolerant, no wonder you got acne! I hope your skin is better now. I struggle to digest soy, so vegan protein powders made me feel awful... I use whey protein now and its a bit better but I still get a headache sometimes. I just tend to eat whole foods now and that is what works best for me.

I was taking a protein powder which contained BCAAs and Isolate protein and a bunch of other fat burning elements and some vitamins. I noticed that bits of hair would fall out. Not a lot maybe about 20 strands of hair laying there. I was concerned so I switched to and brought flavoured protein concentrate without the extras to keep it simple and less processed. Its been months now and I don't have the same problem anymore.
There was a study that mentioned that BCAAs and Protein isolate can cause hair loss. I don't know if there was a study done on protein concentrate. The study mentioned that BCAAs and Protein isolate can cause a testosterone spike after taking it after exercise. Perhaps this protien spike creates an overload where the DHT isn't properly managed in the body for a period of time. Maybe your overall testosterone doesn't go up in the day or week but a spike for 30mins or 15mins may be a problem.
I could be wrong this is just my personal experience. I could of missed some variable in my experience and concluded incorrectly. Best everyone see what works for them. I seen youtubers mention that creatine may cause hair loss too.
