शेखावटी की हवेलियों को दुनिया की सबसे बड़ी ओपन आर्ट-गैलरी की भी संज्ञा दी जाती है। इन हवेलियों पर बने चित्र शेखावटी इलाके की लोक रीतियों, त्योहारों, देवी-देवताओं और मांगलिक संस्कारों से परिचय कराते हैं। ये इस इलाके के धनाड्य व्यक्तियों की कलात्मक रुचि की भी गवाही देते हैं। यूं तो इस इलाके में चित्रकारी की परंपरा छतरियों, दीवारों, मंदिरों, बावडि़यों और किलों-बुर्जो पर जहां-तहां बिखरी है। लेकिन धनकुबेरों की हवेलियां इस कला की खास संरक्षक बनकर रहीं। अर्ध-रेगिस्तानी शेखावटी इलाका राव शेखाजी (1433-1488 ईस्वी) के नाम पर अस्तित्व में आया। व्यवसायी मारवाड़ी समुदाय का गढ़ यह इलाका कुबेरों की धरती, लड़ाकों की धरती, उद्यमियों की धरती, कलाकारों की धरती आदि कई नाम से जाना जाता है। अब यह इलाका अपनी हवेलियों और ऑर्गेनिक फार्मिग के लिए चर्चा में है।
मोरारका हवेली
यह हवेली नवलगढ़ की उन चुनिंदा हवेलियों में से है जो थोड़े रखरखाव के कारण देखने लायक बची हैं। सन 1890 में केसरदेव मोरारका की बनाई यह हवेली अब संग्रहालय के रूप में सैलानियों के लिए खुली है जिसकी देखभाल एमआर मोरारका-जीडीसी रूरल फाउंडेशन कर रहा है। हवेलियों के जो हिस्से इतने लंबे काल में मौसम की सीधी मार से बचे रहे, वहां के चित्रों के रंग अब भी ताजा लगते हैं।
भव्यता की डिग्री को छोड़ दिया जाए तो न केवल ज्यादातर हवेलियों की बनावट मिलती-जुलती है-दरवाजे, बैठक, परिंडे, दुछत्तियां, जनाना, पंखे, सबकुछ एक जैसे लगते हैं, चित्रकारी में भी खास अंतर नहीं है। चित्रकारी के अलावा हवेलियों के दरवाजे और भीतर कांच का काम भी आकर्षक रहा है। चित्रकारी मुगल व राजपूत शैलियों का मिला-जुला रूप है। जिन हवेलियों का रखरखाव हो रहा है, वहां इन पेंटिंग को बचाने की कोशिश हो रही हैं। दीवारों की मरम्मत हुई हैं, चित्रों की केमिकल ट्रीटमेंट से देखरेख हो रही है ताकि मौसम, धुएं, मिट्टी, गंदगी आदि को साफ किया जा सके। मोरारका हवेली में जहां पुरानी पेंटिंगों को नया रूप देने की कोई कोशिश नहीं की गई है और उनके मूल रूप को ही बचाए रखने पर जोर है, वहीं पोद्दार हवेली म्यूजियम में चित्रों को उसी तरह के रंगों का इस्तेमाल करके नया रूप दे दिया गया है और इससे वे बिलकुल नई जैसी लगती हैं। दोनों ही तरीकों ने एक ऐसी विरासत को सहेजकर रखा है जो अन्यथा बहुत तेजी से विलुप्त हो जातीं।
The havelis of Shekhawati are also called the world's largest open art-gallery. The paintings on these havelis give an introduction to the folk rituals, festivals, deities and auspicious rites of the Shekhawati area. These also testify to the artistic interest of the wealthy people of this area. In this area, the tradition of painting is scattered everywhere on umbrellas, walls, temples, stepwells and forts. But the havelis of Dhankuberas remained as special patrons of this art. The semi-desert Shekhawati area came into existence under the name of Rao Shekhaji (1433-1488 AD). The stronghold of the merchant Marwari community, this area is known by many names like land of Kubers, land of fighters, land of entrepreneurs, land of artists etc. Now this area is in discussion for its havelis and organic farming.
Morarka Haveli
This haveli is one of the few havelis in Nawalgarh that has survived due to little maintenance. Built by Kesardev Morarka in the year 1890, this mansion is now open to the tourists as a museum, which is being looked after by MR Morarka-GDC Rural Foundation. The parts of the havelis that survived the direct impact of the weather for so long, the colors of the paintings still look fresh.
Barring the degree of grandeur, not only do most of the mansions have a similar design - the doors, the living room, the parishes, the chute, the zenana, the fans, everything looks the same, there is not much difference in the paintings. Apart from painting, the glass work on the doors and interiors of the havelis has also been attractive. Painting is a mixture of Mughal and Rajput styles. Efforts are being made to save these paintings in the havelis which are being maintained. The walls have been repaired, the paintings are being maintained with chemical treatment to clear the weather, smoke, mud, dirt etc. While at Morarka Haveli, no effort has been made to revamp the old paintings and the emphasis is on retaining their original form, the paintings in the Poddar Haveli Museum have been revamped using similar colors and This makes them look like brand new. Both methods have preserved a legacy that would otherwise have disappeared very rapidly.
