Kaitlyn Turner but can you actually do it successfully, without absolutely shredding your voice? Because even a lot of people who play and have played Elphaba tear their voice/throat up singing those notes. So being as young as you are, I don’t doubt you can at least hit those notes - but I doubt the technique is there.
Kaitlyn Turner but can you hit them 8 times a week, running around stage and up and down stairs in heels and a heavy dress and green makeup and a wig and hat. Hitting one high note once Ain’t that impressive, but a lead actress has to be consistent.
Best attempt at 02:18 A solid F5 is enough, it really fits the melody very well, and shows how sad is Elphaba after Fiyero's death. Almost everybody is getting crazy about the G#5, we know it's very impressive, and I like it too *but* I prefer emotion instead of extra vocals. It isn't always about high notes, guys!
Of course everyone is going to go crazy. You do know that everyone who is singing Elphaba’s parts are mostly mezzo-soprano. A mezzo-soprano hitting a G#5 is amazing!!!
The Supremes Archive I disagree. I see where you are coming from, but the point of a musical is to express emotions that are too great for plain words, through song. As a vocalist, I greatly appreciate her emphasis on the disparity behind losing Fiyero and using the G#5 as a way to accent the emotion. I do agree however, that this can be done with a well-sung F5.
For me 2:19 has to be my favourite. It truly sounds like she’s wailing and her pain grows as the notes and ascend, and the scream/voice break at the end gives me chills!
I'm in general not a fan of the non-rhotic ones. It feels like cheating to pronounce it "FIYEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAA." But there's some incredible talent on display here; I'm very thankful for the work you put into these and the singers you expose me to.
The change of vowel allows the vocalist to get up in that point of her range without sounding “shouty” (for lack of a better word). O sounds can be tricky tbh
It's a common musical theatre and singing trick in general. The change of vowels makes it easier to get high up, it's less straining on the voice and also it prevents one from becoming pitchy because hitting a C5 just like that is hard and then even going higher
I can't believe it that Danna Paola its in this list. Really, she had 18 year old when act the play. And she is a pop singer, a lot people think "she is a mess" really she is amazing, and she shout up everyone. I want to see in the play again.
Juanki Durán yeah, shes pretty amazing, her current songs don’t really show her true talent but you could really see it stand out when she played Elpheba in Wicked: Mexico. Truly a talented girl and im super proud of her and in love with her voice
Im so impressed by Danna Paola. My favorite Elphaba was always Idina and after her just followed by Eden, but, maaan, Danna with 17 yo and giving those performance at the level of the most experienced women really stole my heart. She started with safe notes, but as the numbers of presentations were passing by the year and a half she was playing the role, she was taking more and more risks to reach a really high level. I don't desestimate any of those wonderful women who really pay honor to the role, of course
i like when they stick to the original c#5 Eb5 because in its “simplicity” (even though nothing in that range is simple) it just shows the amount perfect amount of emotion and rawness of elphabas feelings rather than “showing” off with higher more powerful notes
I'm an opera trained mezzo, so I easily hit A5 in Berta's Aria in Barber of Seville. But I can't belt the high notes, they're just really loud head voice from me. All these women are amazing! I need to work on my blending.
Honestly I prefer the original way rather than going up to F5 at the end. I feel like the C#5 gives the opportunity to give a really good emotional break at the end of the note.
I always come to these videos and go while Alice Fearn is my favourite Elphaba and she just stuns me (Also I've heard her go up to an F#5 and maybe even a G5 live) Her simpler riffs to the Eb5 or F5 are very effective, after that she gets a bit shouty. However Jacqueline Hughes as per usual blasting me into outer space with her vocals. I think on pure vocal ability she's my favourite sung Elphaba
Not a fan of the ones who don't finish the word Fiyero and end mid-riff. I understand it's a very vocally demanding note and it fits with Elphaba's current emotional state but it's just sort of sloppy and at least the breath should be planned ahead
Clearly I know nothing about music. That G#5 note sounded like the worst note in the 7.5mins but then the comments rave about it. I'll just go back to admitting I know nothing about music buy enjoying Wicked nevertheless.
I don’t know your musical background- just a disclaimer- but the G#5 sounds funky because of the placement. Being able to chest mix that high is very difficult, and the placement can sound nasally because of the “spin” required to keep it steady. Some people don’t like the way that sounds, and it’s just fine. It’s totally a matter of personal preference :) I don’t know if that Elphaba planned to do it or it just happened in the moment, but I personally think it was cool :)
Edens #2 is awesome but #3 is amazing! Alice fearn #2 is amazing Jaquiline Hughes #3 fg# is insane awesome! PS y'all missed Shoshana she is queen at this one! She is who created option3 for the show!
Sorry, this list is incomplete without Donna Vivino. To me hers is the clearest and most passionate interpretation of this line. But whoever that was at 3:09 !!!!!
It always sounds harder on their vocal chords when they do it too. An “Oh” is a lot easier to sing than an “Eh”, and not many are modifying it to an “Ay” so I don’t get why they don’t flip to the “Oh” as soon as they possibly can.
The G#5 was insane! I do Riff 3 of Danna and Riff 1 of Idina. I might do a No Good Deed cover. I don't know which riff to do. Usually it just happens on how my voice feels and what's most convenient at the time.
Pearl the rebel I go for the F if I'm comfy If my voice needs rest I'll make the usual riff(Eb5) pls do! This is one of my fav songs! Merry Christmas!!
Mister Golightly I do my recordings on Smule sing and I have to renew my account which I'll do tomorrow. I might do a different song from Wicked if I can find a solo one.
Mister Golightly I did Defying Gravity. I'll do No Good Deed tomorrow. I got a little shaky and nervous at the end. Tell me what you thought www.smule.com/p/1506614313_1879393646

Hughes and Ruiz. My God. I was fortunate to get to hear Donna Vivino's version and I find it's up there with those two. I like how Hughes hit the syllable "ro" with a bit of a scoop into it. I think the goal of Wicked was just to make Elphaba's songs as impossible to sing as possible lol
ASparrow13132 retweet! I'm seeing the show in Pittsburgh in February and I pray the Elphaba does some crazy riffs lol
ASparrow13132 really? I can NAIL some oF Elphaba’s high notes and I’m pretty young and my voice is still developing

Yeah. She's just gotten a bad rap. I guess you could call it Mala Fama... 😎
Honestly at 1:50 that girl was hittin some unique notes and I preferred it
shane gillis when is a beast!
EDEN
THE QUEEN
IDINA IS THE BEST THO
She managed to hit some really unique notes, and keep the emotion! I like.

Myra Ruiz (Elphaba from Brazil) SLAYS THAT HIGH NOTE
My favorites Elphabas of all time are Idina Menzel, Myra Ruiz (I'm brazilian as well and she SLAYS THAT HIGH NOTE) and Jessica Vosk
Was I the only one who at 3:49 started yelling "Go For The G5!!! You already have an applause!!!!!"
The way she belt that F5 with her body bent o-M-G!
This was the brazilian cast, and this video it's from the last day.
Do you mean the G#5?
A G5 might sound bad
Honestly I prefer the original way rather than going up to F5 at the end. I feel like the C#5 gives the opportunity to give a really good emotional break at the end of the note.
Sean Silence listen to Donna Vivino do it and you’ll see why it’s popular. But no one ever does it as well as her.
There’s no way I could pick a favorite! All the singers offer something different and haunting to the role.
1.- Rachel ❤️❤️❤️
2.- Willemijn⭐⭐⭐
3.- Danna OMG 🇲🇽👌🏻🎉
I know this isn’t a “who sang it best” video, but Jaqueline Hughes is legendary.
