Hey guys! I get a lot of people asking about why the twinkling stops about 16 seconds in. I made a fix for this which you can find here: th-cam.com/video/8I5EcKhWX0M/w-d-xo.html Hope that helps! ❤️
Jony Roy I’m sorry I was so frustrated the other day I didn’t mean to sound so rude. I’m reading what I said back and I definitely could have been much nicer so I apologize. I got stuck on where you said to right click and put it on screen. Because when I right click there is no screen option.
In case anyone can't find the "Screen" option for the Glowing Stars layer, click on the 3 horizontal bars next to his "Night Sky", mouse over "Columns" and enable "Modes"
If you want longer twinkles the expression provided by Jony without the extra clicks: freq = 2000; amplitude = 16000; m = amplitude; i = time*freq; m - (i % (2*m) - m); It uses a saw wave to reset the values so they stay below 90 and don't cause issues.
A cool trick I've used to get a more realistic camera shake is to track a static point in a video and then apply that track data to the still footage. This basically applys real camera shake to something that wasn't recorded with a camera.
Hey! Just wanted to say Thank you for this tutorial! I used the fix as well and my preview looks great. Only one problem, for some reason the twinkling stars do not render/export! When you rendered your project, how did you do it to keep the twinkling stars?
Very helpful! Thanks so much dude! One question though, what expression would you use here if you wanted the evolution on the turbulent noise to increase infinitely or in a seamless loop?
Do you have any tutorial of a spinning diamond or jewelry with twinkling star glow applied? Any thoughts of Trapcode Star Glow filter available for Adobe Aftereffects? I'm a noob in Aftereffects but want to achieve a star like glow on jewelry video and wanted to know the best ways to do it
Please I need help, I have no idea why while previewing the twinkle works just fine but when I render the twinkle is not there...is it because I use 3d layers?
Hey Dennis, I haven't had a chance to look at it on my end, but my guess is for the expression I mention at 2:32, try a lower number than 2000 like 1000 or 500, maybe even 250. Hope that helps!
Wow, great tutorial! I needed this for a student film. Great integration method. I do feel like the "twinkling" is a little too strong, but you may have done that so it stands out more.
Magnusson Productions thanks! I definitely brought it out more than what is realistic since I wanted it to stand out more in the shot and not get masked by TH-cam compression.
Does this work only with a dark sky? I am trying to have a twinkling star effect on a rather light purple and orange sky, but the twinkle map animation is showing through too much.
Did exactly as you showed, and after I added the twinkle layer, my stars didn't twinkle. The twinkle map moves when shown by itself... after I set the Glowing Stars layer to Screen and Luna Matte [Twinkle Map], my stars do not twinkle. I'm not sure if I did something wrong. Please respond when you get a chance, Thank you.
I’m having same problem as poster below. Everything works until I get to the changing Mode and Tracker on Starry Night layer (middle layer). First, I notice when you changed Mode to Screen, your original picture showed. That did not happen with me. After changing Track Matte to Luma, Starry Night layer was not twinkling. Bottom layer doesn’t twinkle. The only thing fluctuating is Twinkle Map layer.
Your Starry Night layer should be mostly black (as dark as possible) in order for your the Screen mode to work. Make sure that your Twinkle Map is directly above the stars layer, you should see it say "Luma Matte "Twinkle Map"" and then it should work
When i set the blending mode to screen on the Glowing Stars layer, nothing happens, so i tried randomly selecting another blend mode and i'm finding none of them work on that layer, would you happen to know what i'm doing wrong? Great video btw.
Awesome tutorial, but I’m having the same issue as some other posters....the twinkle map works great with the turbulent noise, but nothing else with work/twinkle....thoughts? Ideas? Thank you!
hi, im a mac user, at the 2:35 , the box at the right down corner for adding those numbers (2000, 1000, 500 etc) , it did not appear on my interface. what should i do? thx
Hey! Let me know if this works: in the bottom-left of the timeline, go into the "Twinkle Map" layer, and open the "Effects" heading, then open up the "Turbulent Noise" heading, and find the row that says "Evolution". There should be a circular timer icon on the left that you can click while holding "option" or "alt" key (depending on your keyboard). That should open up the box.
for some reason, I am having trouble mapping luma map with 2023 after effects. I clicked on screen and then track matte to Twinkle Map (Luma) but it still shows up the big white and black solid
Maybe you can help me. I am trying to figure out how to take a star field such as this one and make all the stars align to form a person. How would I do this in After effects? And how could I give the stars color? Any tips/advice is highly welcomed!
Hi everyone! I have the same issue than two of folks below. I followed all the steps (including the answers given to P) but I still don't have twinkling stars :( Is it because my stars are yellow? It seems also that none of the modes (screen, add, etc, etc) have an impact on the layer below...
Could someone please let me know how do I export the project properly? In the preview I do see the glow and the twinkling stars. But when I export it from Media Encoder, it doesn't bring the twinkle effect in the video after it's being exported.
Hello! The vides instructs you to write an expression around 2:33. Instead of adding +time*2000, choose a lower number like 1000 or 500. That means you would type something like +time*500 instead. Hope that helps!
hello! i followed all your steps but my Fractal noise in the Twinkle map is showing still. and its not even enabled. : [ if you can help me out, that would be great!. im trying to finish an animation for a client.
It's not working when I add the screen to the glowing stars and then the track matte option I don't see the same options as you. I don't see Alpha Matte, Alpha Inverted Matte, Luma Matte, or Luma Inverted. I just see None, Twinkle Map, Glowing. I'm on the latest version 2023
I would appreciate any guidance anybody could provide on this... How could I use this technique to have the stars continuously twinkle by having the last frame of the sequence match up with the first frame? I want to use a photo I took and have the twinkle video loop in Wallpaper Engine.
Hey man! It's been a while since I made this, but I believe I have a simple fix. Around 2:30 I say to write an expression on the Twinkle Map > Turbulent Noise > Evolution parameter. Instead of writing an expression, you can try the following: - Set a keyframe at the beginning valued at 0 - Set a second keyframe in the middle of your timeline at a really high value like 50x0.0º (you'll have to experiment with this one to get the twinkle speed you want) - Set a third keyframe at the end of your comp back at 0 I find the animation is chaotic enough that it's not easy to see the value flip back and forth between keyframes abruptly. Hope that helps!
After changing mode to screen and luma Matta, the image of the turbulent noise just plays over the original image. It doesn't show twinkling stars when you solo the Glowing stars section. Followed perfectly. Any tips :)

really cool. I'd use Levels instead of Curves though.
I love it! Nice results, simply and nice effect
very nice - thank you. I have some footage I want to do this for just a section so this will come in very handy
This is exactly what I needed. Thank you for making this tutorial!

Great tutorial John. What i found, that in my composition "Overlay blending mode " gives better, cleaner result. Chears!
Maciej Ustynowicz interesting. Good to know, thanks!
Which layer do you have the blending mode set to overlay?
Hi. Thanks for the tutorial. will it work on PSD ?
Awesome video man! Super high production value. Keep making videos and the following will come :-)
