@@TIPSinc01Best place to start is the film technical datasheet, Google or search for HP5+ and its easy to find and covers basic development instructions as well as recommended developers. Per Ilford DD-X is the best choice when pushing HP5. When using processing 2 rolls in a 600mil tank a litter of DDX should let you process over 16 rolls of film. To figure the total cost per roll just add the cost of DDX + 500 mil of stop bath and 500 mil of fixer and divide by 16.
@@TIPSinc01 Can't recommend Pictorial Planet on TH-cam enough. Covers everything from developer to film processing basics to printing. From personal experience I recommend the Adox XT-3 developer. It is the same as Kodak Xtol which is an ascorbate based developer. Gives amazing fine grain, is environmentally friendly and pretty cheap. Last but not least, Massive Dev Chart to get the development times benchmark.
HP5 has been my go-to since the beginning. I’m not a brand loyalist but I just understand it and hp5 is very consistent. Here are my top black and whites (I never shoot color): 1. HP5 (400-1600) 2. Ferrania P33 (box-200) 3. FP4 to 800 (those who know, understand)
Ilford FP4 is my favourite since its really sharp and easy to print in the darkroom just like HP5. Its not very push/pullable so I shoot and develop at box speed and get great results. Your Labs price for colour dev is great, but I assume they have to hand process B&W since its not a standardized process. B&W is very easy to process at home in my opinion, unless you shoot alot.
I have to check that FP4 out one time! Yeah the prices aren’t that harsh.. the black and white is hand processed yes so I understand the up in costs. I shoot a lot, so home developing is not something I can fit into my schedule, yet.. haha!
@@TIPSinc01 for color is around 3 euros B&w is around 4, this is the price of developing only. If plus lab scanning, the price is 4.3 for color and 4.9 for b&w and if b&w push two stops is around 6 euros each
@@TIPSinc01 it's for the b&w but the price is only for developing. if plus lab scan is around 4.9 euros. and for color is around 3 for develop and 4.3 euros for both. btw pushing a stop of film costs around 0.6 euros here. so basically developing a roll of black and white film plus scan(pushing two stops) is around 6 euros total
my fav B&W film is double X , aka Kodak 5222 , dev with HT110 , you can push or pull a lot ... contrast are nice , grainy .... I bulk load them and dev myself , it's a bit of works but with the very low roll price .... you feel less guilty to by portra :)
@@TIPSinc01 I love Kentmere 100 pushed one stop to 200. It's my go to for medium format. Simply gorgeous ♥ Kentmere 400 at box speed is super super flat, but pushed to 1600, or even 3200, it becomes pretty much the same as HP5.
@@geraldjoehri Kentmere Flat at 400? I had the opposite experience, i developed it in Atomal 49 Stock at 400 and it turned out with like black tones that were really dark, and not some sort of gray, and nice bright highlights.
Hi, I use HP5 and overexpose it with ISO100. I also use Foma 100 with box speed. I develop at home, so it’s more cost efficient. not complicated and maybe an idea ;)

For B&W developing at home is the only sensible solution. Much cheaper and better quality.

@@TIPSinc01develop with x-tol, hc110 or d-76. I find them pair pretty well tp oish hp5 especially with 1:3 solution.

What do you like about it?
@TIPSinc01 400 ASA speed is convenient, very fine grain and fast C41 lab processing. It's also very manageble using the Sunny 16 Rule.
Maybe you can try Kentmere 400? It's basically the same film (also made bij harman) but its a bit cheaper.
Yeah I hear a lot of good things about it, definitely going to check it out someday!
