    Hi Darren and Frank, sorry I haven't been as active on here due to work commitments. Just want to say you guys are killing it. Every show is outstanding from start to finish. The intro to this video has been one of the most menacing to date with Freddie, great work. Can't wait to see what you guys cover next.

    This is one of my favorites. When I was younger my sister and I watched this movie and she got so scared from the credits when it said "Freddy as himself" lol she was convinced he was actually real after that. Whenever I watch this movie now I think about that, was pretty funny.

    LOVED this movie, only one other than the origonal i really loved. Heather looks so gorgeous, and it was fun to see Robert play himself. Nice cameo by Wes. The opening scene where the metal glove runs amok truly shocked and scared me. The new look of Freddy is fantastic, his best look ever. Best scene was Heather and John Saxon sitting at the park talking. It shows them having a father/daughter connection even though those were just roles in a movie.

    15:36 That's one of my favourite scenes. Freddy waiting for Heather to accept the role of Nancy and when she does by saying "I love you too daddy" to John Saxon who's become his Donald Thompson character Freddy cuts his way out of Dylan's bed and his Nosferatu like shadow on the wall.

    I had to sneak into this in the cinema back in 94', and when I got inside there were maybe eight people in the audience total lol. I was shocked that nobody was there, but was lucky to see a mostly great film and have loved it to this day.
    Other than the final ten minutes which are still decent enough, I think New Nightmare is near perfect.

    Thanks a lot guys for this. I was born in 82, and I am a massive Freddy fan since the age of 6. I watched all 7 and loved every moment of all your points of view. I watched the movies in order starting with: 5, 1, 2, 6, 3, 7, 4, So I think my views would differ - like for eg: I love 5. You have changed my mind on a few things - but I still like 6 😂, even though it is my least favourite - purely nostalgic 😅

    Another nice show. I like New Nightmare, it's definitely above 4,5 and 6 for me. You guys bring up some really interesting points though on how this could have been even better! I loved the ideas yous had about Robert vs Freddy. I think there's some great scenes in this, as yous had mentioned like the Nurse cutting the badness out of Dillion and John Saxon and Heather turning into Sheriff Thompson and Nancy. I have to mention the cringy line Wes says at the start when filming the mechenical claw 'More blood, don't be stingy!' and the Nurse that over amplifies 'Miss Lang-innn-kaaaaamp!' 😂. Plus I think the score for New Nightmare is brilliant. The whole movie was an interesting concept and I've always maintained its a precursor to Scream. I do believe though that one of the original ideas was that Nancy had a stalker and one of them was doing the killing. That's why you have the creepy driver, the talk show host, even Robert all acting a bit suspect. It was to turn out the baby sitter was doing the killing. But this all got changed.

    There was a movie I watched as a child in the 80s. It was a movie called,"The Art of splatter". More of a behind the scenes, practical special effects tutorial. Of course the film they followed was a Loyd Kauffman style low budget horror film. Had one of the best head explosions ever. Right up there with Deadly friend.

    I remember the trailer where they showed only snippets of action with the only thing the trailer is telling you is this is a new Wes Craven horror and at the end the “Miss me?” moment. And I was taken aback at how different and how fucking scary he looked and the title didn’t have Elm Street in it. I had no idea what this movie was.

    • @TSLMoviePodcast
      @TSLMoviePodcast  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Indeed, the meta approach was a little confusing in the mid 90’s until Scream came along. I agree the look of him was superb, in the right light.

  • @Xehanort10
    @Xehanort10 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    50:03 They apparently planned a scene where Robert dressed as Freddy would help Heather fight New Nightmare Freddy. Also there was going to be a scene where Wes Craven cut his eyelids off to stay awake like Neil mentioned one of the Westin Hills teens doing in 3.

    • @brandonspain12345
      @brandonspain12345 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I remember hearing the Wes eyelid idea, but where was the source you heard about Robert dressed as Freddy facing off the real Freddy? It's not on the Never Sleep Again documentary. All I heard was a scene where Robert was attacked by a giant spider Freddy but was cut due to budget and being too campy for the movie's more grounded and dark tone.

  • @deforeestwright2469
    @deforeestwright2469 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This film is very good, but I wouldn’t say you are either going to like the snobby, intellectual, Dom Perignon flavor of it or spit it out because you just want to see Freddy killing people. I like smart horror films, but I have never been a fan of the quasi-post-modern, “meta” horror films that started in the 90s. The primary reason why is because more often than not they aren’t very smart. They just claim to be by unsubtly over emphasizing their theme and the fact that they have one, or cleverly making fun of tropes and formulas rather than being any more original than a fourth wall breaking. The trade off is that you make suspension of disbelief difficult because you are constantly winking at the audience. Like I said this film is good-one of the more successful films of this type-but on some level it is also just Wes Craven getting his old cast back together and revisiting some of his old script ideas and classic shots. That’s not to put it down, but just to illustrate why not loving it can be intellectually legit.

    New Nightmare is a mixed bag for me, some of the meta stuff on Hollywood didn't really land for me and it can be a little sluggish but the good was making Freddy scary again and I think this gives Heather/Nancy a good sendoff in this franchise because I never agreed with her death in Dream Warriors. I really wish Wes would've done what Halloween 2018 did, a direct sequel to the original and see what a late 20's Nancy was doing in her life.

    • @brandonspain12345
      @brandonspain12345 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wes actually had watched all of the previous movies after the original and felt he didn't know what to do with what happened after Freddy's Dead. But he didn't want to copout what the studio did by killing off Freddy and also didn't want to just resurrect Freddy in a lazy or stupid way and got the inspiration of meeting the original movie's stars again and made a movie outside the series. But I feel audiences would be so confused on how Nancy came back. At least with Halloween H20, you can still see it as a Halloween 3 or Halloween 7 and had the advantage of bringing back Laurie without explaining "it's another timeline." I don't think audiences in the 90s would've been ready for that kinda reboot. Jason Goes to Hell did that ignoring 3 - 8 and was awful for ignoring the legacy of Jason.

    Honestly,I think this film is...ok. I hate to say that but I don't understand a lot of the praise it gets. I mean,the idea of the movie itself is utterly brilliant. Having "Freddy" haunting the actors and the filmmakers was such a wonderful and creative premise,but I think the execution fell a little flat. "Freddy's" makeup is hit or miss too. It looks great in the dark and covered in shadow(Like when he first meets Heather in her bedroom),but later on we see him in bright light too much and in the end when he's in his lair,the makeup looks too dry and rubbery.

    Fun fact Wes Craven wanted Johnny Depp to appear in the film but figured he wouldn’t sign on because of how popular he has gotten at the time but years later they asked Johnny the question and he said all he had to do was ask him he would have loved to joined the film

      I agree. Wes should have approached him. After all if he can make a cameo in Freddy's Dead, I'm sure he would have loved to be part of New Nightmare

      Wes gave him his break, he probably wouldn’t have minded paying back the favour to him

    Seen as they were rehashing elements from films. Why not use englund as his opportunity. His vessel like he did Jesse.
    As i was writing this comment dave said exactly what I was thinking
