We spent a very rainy day exploring Florence. Even though its one of the more popular cities to visit Italy, we wouldn't recommend spending all your time there
Sorry to see that you were caught in so many tourists' traps. Sometimes that'll happen when you follow others advise rather than researching your own. Firenze is definitely overrun with tourists, especially if you limit your exploring to the centro storico. If you'd ventured to San Marco, Oltrarno, Santo Spirito and other pockets outside the immediate Santa Maria Novella and Ponte Vecchio areas I believe you may have been more enriched.
