    • @MrThedocholiday

The nice thing about the felt done this way is it's water tight. I've had terrible rainstorms pass through on my jobs before with only the felt on & never leak a drop inside the house. I like to sleep at night so I apply the felt carefully as soon as I can on all my jobs & then take my time installing the shingles so the roof is done right & lasts for decades. The only felt I use for shingles or tile is 30 lb ASTM. I think the brand is Fontana Paper but the brand isn't as important as the ASTM rating. I use the heavier felt for shingles as well as tile so when my loaders walk on it or the wood flexes under it, the felt doesn't tear & compromise my efforts to keep everything water tight. Hope that answers your questions. Thanks for watching.

If I may… 1. Do everything in life with quality first in mind, not quantity, regardless of criticism. 2. Practice doing quality in your work with ever increasing speed. 3. As soon as the quality of your work begins to suffer, slow your speed down slightly until the quality returns. 4. Always keep quality as the higher priority but always challenge yourself to see if you can do it faster without sacrificing quality. 5. Always be honest with yourself & others regarding the quality of your work, so you don’t make excuses & lie to yourself about speed being more important than quality. Otherwise you will make excuses & compromise your integrity for convenience, expediency & even for greed or bragging rights, fame or power. 6. Remember quality & doing things right always comes at a higher cost to you than doing things carelessly or selfishly.
Tell me that’s not what is wrong in our culture today & I will have a good laugh while enjoying my quality reputation among my customers. 😎
Hope that helps you slay every job you land & maybe even start your own successful business some day like I did.
      Blessings & thanks for watching!

Junior Taliulu Glad you enjoyed throwing shingles. I actually enjoyed it too on many occasions. Anything under ten squares I’d load on my shoulders climbing up an extension ladder myself. The company loading my roof in this video loaded 12 roofs per day at this pace. What’s wrong with other companies who’s employees move much faster but do the same number of loads in the same time period? I’ll tell you what’s wrong with them... They do sloppy work & I’d never hire them to load my roofs, because they always make my job harder; like it wasn’t hard enough to reroof an entire house in the California summer heat by myself with no employees. Since I was the boss, I decided who loaded my roofs & who packed their bags & loaded the next shmuck-ran roofing project down the street. I ran my own roofing company by myself for 20 years & I crushed the competition without relying a single employee the whole time. Not many owner operators can make that claim, because they all sit behind desks & farm out crappy labor themselves. Can’t argue with success. Ha!

But I had to put the nails where they'd go into the wood & hold the felt well. I'm sure you know what I mean. In any case, you just keep doing things right, because as you say, "Good roofers are extremely rare" & I'm really encouraged to know there are others out there like yourself who really care & take pride in your work without being full of it.

+Justin Conkin You're still missing the point. It's not about me. It's about what works to profit the bottom line for both companies working together. You are obviously not a business owner. You are a worker & you only have a worker's viewpoint which is skewed. I have done all my own work for 3 decades & have been a business owner for 2 decades. So I have both views in mind. It's the business owner who must suffer the loss of workers who do crappy work because they go too fast. I don't need these guys tearing up my felt right before the weekend & have a storm come through overnight & flood my customer's house. Workers don't think about liabilities. They only think about how fast they can get done so they can go have a beer or smoke a joint. If they did have a more business minded viewpoint they would probably be moving toward becoming a business owner. But transitioning from being a worker to running your own company has many pitfalls & one of those pitfalls is choosing quantity over quality. Quantity is good, but quality is better & only those who run the finances understand this concept.

its only easy if your not the one loading it lol... the weight of those bundles vary from 75 lbs - 90 lbs depending on the brand of shingle. oh and yes those retractables suck. When they stop you in your track while carrying those bundles, it can jerk you pretty good. This guy had a good moderate pace, so thats probably why he didnt have too many problems with it.
As for running around like chicken with their heads cut off lol... Im sure there is a delivery charge of $50 or so correct? Faster the roof is loaded means you can load more roofs which equals more profit. That is what supply companies want. Fast = profit. Im sure many roof loaders would love this casual pace but the supply companies would lose money over it if every house was loaded this slowly. I can assure you they would not tolerate every roof being loaded in this manner. The easy roofs that are fast to get done make up for the time consuming steep roofs. Just a little info on the matter.

You appear to be right on all accounts. The problem is the regulatory & safety commissions like osha... and corporate of course. If you dont scratch them while putting them on they will look nice when done that's it. Other than that they are cheap pos bottom line. I say this and actually install more gaf than anything but I wouldnt put them on my house or any family. They are cheap so the markup is good on them plus all American got to give some credit. Also there marketing and advertising are really nice, doesn't mean there a good shingle.... there acceptable at most.

Southeastern farms I’ve installed all the different brands & completed thousands of repairs on comp shingles over the last 30+ years on thousands of roofs personally. You haven’t stated any legit reasons to support your own bias. The least you could do is give comparable reasons why you prefer one brand over another. But as it is, you come on to my channel after I give reasons supporting my own preferences on my own video & you call me a liar, like some juvenile windbag.
By the way, all the different brands are the same thickness unless they’re a different grade. In that case you cannot compare thicker higher grade shingles to thinner lower grade shingles. That’s what it sounds like you’re doing.
I know this because it doesn’t make economic sense to let your competitors sell the same grade shingle with less materials in it & make the same profits. If you don’t realize that competitors regularly inspect one another’s products, you don’t yet understand the cut throat nature of free market business.

    • @southeasternfarms3730

Well 1 gaf never comes consistent at all. Curled edges etc basically full of manufactures defects/imperfections. On other hand other brands have better packaging and none of the listed errors of gaf I just mentioned. I could go on and on. There book sizes /starter books waste material if installed specifically to their directions. Other brands... no waste. What you cut falls into place to make the rest of the book, also bonding strength is about as weak as those guys unloading the material in your video.. I'm 30 so not some young kid talking shit. Been doing it 15 years and in my time gaf is on the bottom of my list. Maybe 20 years ago I would have agreed with you. Sry to call you a liar but I strongly disagree to say there the best.

There’s no such thing as hard work that can be considered bs. There’s a reason why I want my roofs loaded the way I do & these guys always complied, instead being lazy, doing it their own way & causing me problems during the installation. Who are you to judge the servant of another? Before his own master he either stands or falls, and stand he will, for God is able to make him stand.
While I’m not God, I am the boss on my jobs. And what I want goes. My success as a roofing contractor speaks for itself & no blow-hards who’ve never run their own successful roofing business have anything to criticize, because frankly, they don’t have a clue what it’s like to be anything but wannabes. Some day perhaps you’ll learn why quality over quantity regardless of methods is always better in the end… or not. Either way, save your expletives (BS) for tools like yourself rather than posting them on my vids.
