  • Australia invented sex! Well, at least, this is where it all started. Palaeontologist John Long made a discovery that 380 million years ago, living creatures physically mated here for the first time. His team of scientists also found the oldest evidence of male genitalia.

    Be careful tossing the B word around like that: "There's no doubt that the T-Rex, the Brontosaurus and the Triceratops are the rock stars of the fossil world..." except that 1 of those 3 officially never existed, other than as a synonym for "Apatosaurus". Unofficially, new evidence has prompted a recent rethink, but for now, the Brontosaurus remains an embarrassing fiction / error of classification (or possibly a deliberate hoax).

    But the missing link is still missing-- how did a single cell organism develop any further. If they found the "first fossil", there must be a story as to how it got like that! Better wording is that this is the first fossil they have found with these features. The change from laying a million eggs and hoping to having one off spring and caring is an enormous design change!! Explain that and you will be the first!!

    It seems a bit strange that dinosaurs vanished 60 million years ago, but their bones can be found right at the surface, not even one inch of dirt over them 🤔

    • @riiidiculoso8697
      @riiidiculoso8697 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      It’s not ’strange’, but it certainly is fascinating.
      Fossils are hard to find in Australia - the continent has been subject to more than 30 million years of weathering and erosion, so there are fewer areas of suitable exposed rock in which fossils can occur.
      Most of the material that has been found is from the early to middle Cretaceous period around 95 to 125 million years ago. Fossils younger than that are likely to have been eroded away, whereas earlier fossils remain buried - though not always forever.
      The unique geology of certain areas of the country means that some fossils lie on an anticline (a geological fold shaped into an arch by immense pressure), which pushes them up towards the surface. Then, the fossils are picked up by black soil, and as the ground wets and dries, the soil contracts and gradually pushes the fossils above the ground.
      So it is that, for example, in 2009 the bones of a sauropod (nicknamed Cooper), who died 95 million years ago and was subsequently buried under 300 metres of sedimentary rock, and 700 - 800 metres of soil, were found sitting loosely on the surface.
