I love my Deepmind12.. it was my first synth and WAY too advanced for me. But, as I've learned with other instruments, it's always been amazing translating that knowledge into the Deepmind. The features and capabilities of this synth are absolutely astounding. Each new synth I get that has some cool new feature, I come to find the Deepmind can perform the same task, it just takes some know-how rather than a dedicated button or slider.

I know there was a period of time where I was underwhelmed with it.. but it really was just my failure to understand how much this synth really has to offer. It's definitely the type of synth that will have people who absolutely hate it, and those who absolutely love it, and it'd be hard to sway someones opinion on it.. but I think to really appreciate what this synth is, and what is capable of really requires a good, long hands on period. But hey 🤷🏻♂️ to each, their own.

Great stream! Videos like this are a goldmine for beginners like me. I knew my deepmind was capable of ambient and generative patches, but seeing the process of setting it up like this gives amazing insight into the modulation capabilities of this synth. I've been tweaking for hours after watching this. Superb source of inspiration, thank you!
Note: The 12D desktop isn’t that much more expensive; if you already have a midi keyboard you like, i’d recommend going for the 12D. The keyboard on the DM isn’t high-quality, and with 12 voices you can make some truly huge sounds.

I DO love this synth...I may have slightly enjoyed it more if it had been designed with knobs rather than faders because to me, knobs are just more aesthetically pleasing. But for the price, it cannot be beat. My Deepmind 12 and Moog Sub 37 puts me in aural heaven...Cheers, sir.

Thanks for the information on another of your videos. I ended up ordering Deepmind 12D instead of Korg Opsix - which is why I'm here. I used to own Roland Alpha Juno 1 or 2 (can't recall) way back which played a big part in my decision to get DM. Also I don't need another keyboard. Let's see if Korg releases a desktop version of Opsix.
Thank you! I don't really think of it as menu diving on the Deepmind though - menu per section with a dedicated button and all of the menus are flat. If you're going to have menus then this is the way to do it (although maybe having a nice touch screen to speed up setting the values might be nice...)
Oscillator Sink oh yeah totally. Sometimes trade off must exist, they would not be able to cram all those features inside without it. And yes, knob-page-feature route is the simplest way. I had to learn synthesis on Roland JV1080, great synth for its time, I actually bought it again recently - but menu diving is.. above and beyond, same as patch-empty DX 7, just different sort of synthesis. So I am not intimidated by this menu (for instance I like how Arturia sorted MF, although many ppl will not concur). I was tempted to get DM but decided to go REV2 route. However every time i see it in action it seems like unique synth. Especially for what I would need it for, soundscapes, evolving and random patches. My synths are perfectly capable to get me there however DM sounds really nice.
Another synth with a really great menu system: Hydrasynth. I usually hate menu diving, but i find the way its laid out on the Hydrasynth so smart and easy to use that it’s actually fun to use. This is almost a first; a synth that makes its menus into an actively enjoyable a]experience. Have owned a lot of synths over the decades, and have to say, Deepmind and Hydra are both so well-designed. My only design gripe, on the Deepmind, as you point out... why no triangle/sine?!? If i could make a wish on the Deepmind, it’d be for a sample playback oscillator; then you could add anything you like.

Hey, have you ever encountered a high-pitched whining noise when connecting the Deepmind to an audio interface? If so, how did you get around it? I am currently experiencing this issue and I am unsure if it is my device's fault or caused by using unbalanced cables. (It's on the headphone out as well though)
@@OscillatorSink Thanks for the prompt response - no, USB is not connected. I have even tried powering the interface and the device from the same power strip to eliminate any possible causes of ground loops and the issue still persists. I think the problem is internal to the Deepmind, as putting on different effects changes the quality of the noise.
One calibration later, nothing has changed. The whining is less prominent when using balanced cables, but it can still be heard even with the volume on the device turned all the way down. I also found that some effects (all reverbs and the multiband distortion in particular) made it a lot worse, so it might have to do with a clock for the effects chip bleeding through into the outs. Very unfortunate, I'll probably return the device and get a new one.
I don't own and have never laid hands on a Juno, so I'd not want to comment based on personal experience. That said, there are videos on TH-cam directly comparing them and based on those videos... the vibe seems similar but not sonically identical. Inspired by, rather than a clone.
Having used a number of vintage rolands I find my dm12 is sort of a halfway between the jx3p and juno 106. You can get it closer to the 106 if you pay special attention to the features or lack there of on the 106 and mimicking those constraints on your patch design. Starsky Carr’s channel has a pretty good compare video and found the chorus effect settings that get you closest to the 106 chorus. Personally I prefer the 12 to a real juno since it can do a close enough (you couldn’t tell in a mixed track which was used) 106 sound and can do much deeper evolving sounds and great analog dco sounds. It’s not gonna sound like an old memeory moog or cs-80 but it’s warmer than people give it credit for.

Love the fact you have a nice brush next to your DM. That should be the first step to creating any patch.
I've rightly been given grief for having dust on my synths during videos before, so the synth brush is always nearby these days.
I've been using a nice brush to dust of my D-piano and synths :-), One can't be without.

Have you run calibration recently? I'd try that - leave it on for an hour first then run calibration and see if that helps.
