    no camera's menu system is as attractive as Hasselblad's, straight to the point, all the important info labeled neatly in an attractive manner, just makes it a thrill to go out and shoot.

    Great video, James (as always). I especially enjoy your mindfull minutes at the end of each presentation. We are holidaying in Ambleside this week and made an enjoyable (if strenuous) climb up to Latterbarrow from Hawkshead today. What superb views from the monument! The conditions were perfect and we took loads of photographs. You are indeed fortunate to have such amazing landscapes on your doorstep. Keep up the great work - we find your videos so inspiring. Cheers.

    Another nice video James - with a geeky section in it as well!
    FWIW, in my personal experience, most modern FF cameras will produce excellent results, even when printed quite large. However the larger the sensor and greater the number of pixels, the wider the scope in post processing for dynamic range and cropping. And in the ability to print very large.
    However, the feel of the camera and how it suits an individual’s style is also very important and, having used MF for over 50 years now, it still gives me satisfaction to use a larger sensor/film camera. That may mean nothing to some people, which I can understand, but deriving pleasure from the whole process is very rewarding.
    Keep the videos coming James, I’m enjoying them immensely.

      @@billyabroad8057 Yes sure, The only limitation id say is the fixed focal length, while ok to crop in given the larger file sizes it lacks telephoto capabilities. I enjoy both cameras and chose one based on my mood and if I take a tripod or not.

    James,
    That was very enjoyable and informative. I had touched base with you a few months back when I was asking a few questions about the X1D and lens combinations for landscape. I was just coming up to a purchase and I value your skills and experience. When I got to the shop I decided to go a different direction completely and went with Leica mostly due to portability. I picked up the Q2 and the M10-R with 21mm and 90 APO. I've always wondered what I was missing without buying the X1D. This video helped tremendously.
    Cheers James! I have loved your channel for years. Can't wait to get back to northern England later this year for a few days of good photo rambles.

      Glad to hear you’ve made a decision Mark and I doubt you’ll regret that. I have considered the M10-R. If I didn’t have the X1D I’d go down that route. I was offered a black paint version a while back but decided on the Q2 instead. The portability of the M and it’s lenses can’t be under estimated and they are truly outstanding lenses.

    Been awhile since I visited your fine channel James. The addition of framed still images is very well done. This video title caught my eye as I have often wondered if (pixel) size truly matters. Do you think you would choose one system over the other based on final print size as their sensor ratio is quite different?

    Hello James. Just two quick questions: 1-what you call HDR in this video is actual HDR (taking several images at different EVs (exposure values) or just lightening the shadows and darkening the highlights of a single shot in an image-processing software? 2-did you notice any difference in resolution/detail, noise and color rendition between the two cameras (assuming you used the same iso, shutter speed and aperture for the two cameras?

    • @JamesBellLandscapePhotography
      @JamesBellLandscapePhotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Bruno. I call HDR a composite image made up of three exposures at different EV values yes. In terms of your second question. The medium format will always out resolve the 35mm sensor however the question is how much do we need. I can do anything to the X1D files in LR and they don’t degrade. The 35mm files don’t take as much abuse. Both files were clean in this scenario but the bigger pixels of the Medium format would certainly offer a cleaner image. How much you need that however is open for debate. I may have a vlog coming later this year on the medium format advantage.

    • @BrunoChalifour
      @BrunoChalifour 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JamesBellLandscapePhotography Thank you very much for your prompt and very detailed response James. I could not figure out what your HDR process was from the video. I have been using a X1D as well as a Q (not so much after an issue with the autofocus system) and an M10 monochrome [my work deals mostly with landscape and the exhibition/sale of prints]. In spite of the lack of stabilization on the X1D which forces me to use a monopod or a tripod in many situations I have a tendency to rely on it over the rest of my equipment (I like the way the files look once printed as I print my own work either on a Canon 1000 or Epson 4900 printer-I find default Canon colours more saturated and Epson colours closer to what I look for).

    Interesting comparison James, more mobile with the Q2 though which could be a plus. Surprised you use the tripod with such a long extension of the centre coloum, do you have any stability problems in windy conditions. I did away with the centre coloum by getting a taller tripod. Lovely shots yet again James - thankyou.

    Between X2D and M11, which one will you get if you can only get one to have a fun experience to shoot daily life, travel and Lego size of object? Is X2D experuence just like any DSLR and Mirrorless where the camera do most thing for you, if that is the case, is it fun? How about rangefinder, I like the rangefinder OVF but since both system nearly the same price, is it make more sense to just get the X2D?

    Taking any brand snobbery out of things - can you let me know in what ways the results from either the Leica or the Hasselblad improve on from that of say a professional model Canon, Nikon or Sony ?. Always wondered what the benefit of spending what for some is a fairly large chunk of change would be as opposed to using something more wallet friendly - lol. Thanks.

    • @JamesBellLandscapePhotography
      @JamesBellLandscapePhotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That’s a good question and one I’m happy to answer from my own perspective. There are two reasons I use these cameras. 1. The results out the camera are the same as what you saw as each camera is calibrated by hand in the factory I believe. This saves me countless hours of post production. 2. I’m a design engineer by training and spent a good few years designing bespoke one of prices of high end medical and laboratory equipment. For me I appreciate a well designed and constructed product. I spent years designing products that people want to use, Ford a connection with and enjoy using. These two products give me that. Another point is this. Both cameras are simple. Not overly complex in there use or function. There is no excess. No complex menus and excessive buttons. Landscape photography in its purest form is the simplest kind of photography. We don’t need 90% of the features most cameras offer. These two cameras are so unobtrusive to use your focus is literally on the subject and not the camera. For me I care not about the name or the perception of others seeing me use these items. They are simply tools that allow me to work efficiently. Unobstructed and they inspire me to pick them up. They save me time at the desk and more importantly the results I get from them are simply astounding. I hope this helps and this isn’t in anyway taking anything away from other brands or camera models. You can’t really buy a bad camera these days. These just suit me and how I want to photograph

    • @FormlessPhotography
      @FormlessPhotography 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Speaking for just myself personally… I don’t get caught up in the “Snobbery” of things as you would suggest labeling. Those guys that do tend not to have any real skill or creativity. To your point as to how these two brands “improve” (and again, this is just speaking from my experience) what it comes down to is “use case” and preference as to what you like and can afford as well as their unique file colors. I didn’t believe it until I picked up the Q2, but there is a such thing as “the Leica look”. I have both these cameras as well as a Z7ii and I use all of them for different purposes. Q2 primarily for my walk around, travel and street work. (Probably my favorite to use out of all three. It makes you just wanna pick up the camera and shoot) Where as the Hasselblad suits my commercial work for clients with the Nikon being a portrait workhorse. Don’t be fooled though, this Z7ii is a dynamic range monster if you’re interested in landscapes as well. I love all three for what they uniquely do. Simply put though, if you are primarily a landscape shooter, the Nikon is plenty of capable to satisfy your needs. I can’t really speak to canon or Sony other than to say FOR WHAT YOU GET from canon I find them to be overpriced without providing any uniqueness that say a Hasselblad or Leica offers and Sony’s colors render a bit cartoonish looking to me; and again, that’s just for my eye. Hope this helped. Don’t believe the hype from the turtle neck wearing snobs with a Leica though. Lol Cheers

    • @frstesiste7670
      @frstesiste7670 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it's snobbery to go for Leica or Hasselblad. Having tools you like is important for most people. If you just look at image quality then the medium format sensor in the Hasselblad will have a slight edge in dynamic range and number of pixels compared to most full frame sensors. The Q2 sensor is more or less on par with other FF sensors.
      The lenses will of course also contribute a lot to image quality. With interchangeable lens cameras you can find as good lenses as the ones from Leica or Hasselblad, but they wont be inexpensive. So, basically you can get indistinguishable images from any of the high end cameras today as long as you use same quality lenses and shoot RAW. With extremely high contras scenes you might need to bracket and use HDR to match the dynamic range of the larger sensor.

  • @dcrilley9624
    @dcrilley9624 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for that comparison in a landscape setting. At the scale and resolution we can see I am not seeing any great advantage from the X1D having larger pixels on its bigger sensor. The Q2 appears to hold its own if not beat the X1D. Forget the HDR shots. I don't think we can set the stall out by reference to those. The processed single shots with massive shadow recovery at native ISO for each camera are most instructive. It might just be the YT rendition but the X1D image looks like the greens got much noisier than those in the Q2 after you had pulled the blacks and shadows out of the gloom. Q2 is arguably the most accomplished compact camera the world has known. I think it is a superb landscape shooter. With a 49mm adapter a Lee 75 or 85 filter system works a treat with it. It's actually the only camera I can be bothered to use the App on my phone to control the shutter so that I don't bemoan the absence of a cable release. Enjoy it.

    • @JamesBellLandscapePhotography
      @JamesBellLandscapePhotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching. Yes both cameras perform very well. It comes down to personal preference at the ends of the day as the differences between the two are only really appreciated by a small section of photographers. The Q2 is a fantastic addition to my kit and I have thoroughly enjoyed using it so far.

    Great vlogs James. I think you may end up with an M11 and a couple of m lenses, gives versatility and a lightweight set up. I had the Q2 but felt it was limiting with the 28mm lens, although you can crop but you obviously loose detail. I just got the Fujifilm GFX50S MKII which is a bit bulky but those medium format images are something else, for everything else I use the iPhone 12 pro max for scouting and family. Keep the videos coming and stay safe. Ian
