the little two, the square, means that you multipy that number by its self. If it is a 4 with the little two above it, then you multiply that 4, by 4. It is saying multiply that number by itself, that many times. If it were a 3 up above the 4, then you do 4 x 4 x 4. Hope this helps.

just in case, after six years, u still don't know, it means: What ever number u have that is squared, you multiply it by itself. The small number, which you 'the power', is symbolic of how many times you have to multiply it by itself.
Example: 5 squared= 5*5
