  • Footage from the prize ceromony at the world championship in rapid chess. Chucky plays russian checkers with GM Baadur Jobava but is momentarily distracted by having to receive the title of rapid chess world champion. He wastes no time and calculates the winning combination while on. the. podium. THAT'S Ivanchuk!

There are some many mathematicians, chess players and other intelligent people, who seems not to be from this planet. And there is Ivanchuk, who seems not be from this universe.

But for him chess is not all. It's ... ok, but there are also important things like family. Cool guy.

Proud to be Ukrainian, when seeing such guys as Ivanchuk. 100% dedicated to chess. So sad he has not managed to become World Champion. I mean, I could have forgiven him not winning a single tournament, even his brilliant performances in Linares in 1989 and 1991. But man he should have become World Champ. Now his prime is gone. So sad...

not sure about checkers rules but why couldn't Jobava push the c5 pawn to d6 and go promoting???

In checkers, if a piece can be captured then it must be captured.

To be precise, there are many draught variations (checkers is usually used for english version, this seems like russian draught), but common theme across all variation is, that if you can capture piece, you have to do it.

2:02 that's not how checkers is supposed to be played. Queens can only move back one square

@Carlos Silva You're thinking of English/American Checkers. This is most likely Russian or Brazilian Draughts.
