Baseball is both simple and complicated. It goes fast with lots of slow moments between.
I agree - baseball is much more complicated than most think, even casual American fans. Shifts, relays and cutoffs - who is covering for who, who lines up the cutoff, who calls for the cutoff (or not), etc. These are things far beyond most Americans. The basics are easy but the strategy and chess behind are complicated. Similar to American football. Much more complicated than most think IMO.
@@keithowu And the count... the different ways pitchers pitch in different counts and game situations. When you've got a tie game in the bottom of the ninth and a runner on third and suddenly the pitcher is afraid to throw his splitfinger fastball in the dirt because if it gets passed the catcher it probably will cost them the game, but when you stop throwing your best pitch then the hitter is so much more dangerous.
The best way to learn is probably watching a couple games with someone who knows baseball and then playing a baseball video game. Then go back and look up videos about the weirdest rules in baseball. I've loved baseball for pretty much my whole life but it took me years to understand when an infield fly rule is in play and I still get confused by some balk calls. I still can't figure out why Johnny Cueto isn't balking.

Think of like a 1 -run game, 8th inning, your setup man coimes up and gives up a leadoff walk. All of a sudden there's tension for both the home and the away team. You're clenching your asshole, every foul ball scares you.
Once I was attending a college game. No outs runners on first and second. The batter hit a hard high line drive so no infield fly was called. The second baseman kept high in the air caught the ball, landed on the bag , and tagged out the sliding runner from first. In less than 4 seconds he had made an unassisted triple play. The game moves slowly but then wham.

Baseball is a much harder sport for someone not familiar with it to enjoy because of its naturally slow pace. Our love for it comes from the tradition and family-friendly nature.
Once you know the intricacies of the sport, the slower pace doesn't really matter. You get locked it to each and every pitch. I love it so much

Marie, a few facts about baseball:
1) There are 9 innings in each game in which each team gets a chance to score. There are 9 players on the field playing defense to stop the other team from scoring. A team gets three outs to try and score. An out is recorded if a batted ball is caught by a defender, a batter strikes out, or a ball is hit on the ground and is thrown to first base before the batter gets there.
2) To score, a batter uses a bat to try and hit the ball thrown by a pitcher. The batter is allowed three strikes to hit the ball. If a pitcher gets three strikes on a batter, the batter is out and a new batter comes to the plate.
3) A strike is recorded by a pitcher if a batter swings and misses and the ball was thrown in the "strike zone", an area about from a batter's knees to above his waist.
4) A pitch thrown by a pitcher outside the strike zone and not swung at by the batter is called a "ball". After four balls, the batter is allowed to go to first base (the first white square going to the right).
5) To score, the batter needs to go around the bases, finally crossing home plate (the area where he started as a batter).
6) The bases are each 90 feet apart.
You need to watch an entire game, and not just a highlight reel of amazing plays. I think it will help you understand the game better.

There was a woman, a French Canadien named Manon Rhéaume, who was an Olympian and was also not only the first woman to play in the National Hockey League (NHL) but also the first woman to play in ANY of the major sport leagues here in the U.S. She was a goaltender. Yes! The Montreal Royals were founded in 1898 but sadly folded in 1960. 8 years later professional baseball returned withe the Montreal Expos. Sadly, they moved to Washington (USA) in 2004. Hopefully, it will come back again. Montreal without baseball is like Paris without soccer.

I've seen baseball equipment in a sporting goods shop in northern France. I coached women's softball in Belgium when I went there as a student. Northern France also had American football teams when I was there. The Expos baseball team played on the man-made island, Notre Dame Island, in the Saint Lawrence River, that was made for the 1967 International and Universal Exposition. Canada made special coins for 1967 for the Canadian Centennial. In 1967 Montreal was the largest city in Canada, but after the language restrictions in Quebec, many large businesses moved to Toronto, that went on to become Canada's current largest city.

Hitting a baseball, thrown by a Major League Pitcher, is said to be the most difficult thing in sports. Many times the ball is traveling at 144+ kilometers per hour.
Especially a slider. And especially a slider thrown by a pitcher who is the same handed as you are. But all major league pitchers are hard.
Think of it this way: Any job in which you fail at your primary function 66% of the time are are considered incredible.... is tough. If you have a .333 batting average you are only hitting 1/3 of the time, that is a supremely difficult activity. I still find baseball horrendously boring, but I can acknowledge the skill required to play it at a high level.
Although, Kathy Arendsen struck out Reggie Jackson 3 times in 1981 at fast-pitch softball! I remember watching that live & thinking that the ball was just too large for him to miss!! Then I saw her throw -- the movement on the balls she threw was amazing. A rising fastball was something he had never seen.

Like football, baseball came from British schoolyard sports, but was made unique by Americans. The sport of Cricket comes from the same ancestor, like Rugby, American Football, and Soccer/Football are all related.
Baseball is arguably a higher-skill sport compared to football (American) and Basketball. A good Quarterback in Football might now be expected to complete 70% of his throws. A good shooter in Basketball usually hits at least 50% of his shots, and even 40% of the more difficult 3-point shots. But any baseball player who hits more than 30% of the time is AWESOME.

Baseball is like a game of Chess, so many different statistics and strategys go in it. So their is 4 bases, Home base, first base, second base and third base. The way to get a point is that you start at home but you travel through all other bases and get back to home. There are other complex ways but thats why those white squares are important, they are called Bases, you dont have to run through all bases at once, you can rest and wait for your teammate to advance you as well.
And the game is broken up into 9 innings. Each team gets to bat once in each inning and they get to keep batting until they make three outs.

It is a great game for first timers to watch because it shows everything about the game, including how special the game of baseball is to us Americans. It will show you the very best of American baseball on one of its very best nights Yes, it is 4 hours long, but that includes a special celebration after the game, as well as a couple during the game. Even those of us that have loved baseball for EVER, still learn about the strategies of the game. Known has the hardest thing in the world to do - hit a round object (baseball) with a round cylinder (bat) all while the ball is moving anywhere between 90-100 mph! Look for ‘little league world series’ videos, the commentary explains a lot.
Yes when you play or even attend a game you have to pay attention or you will catch a ball in the face lol! It can be boring on tv but playing/being there in person is an entirely different experience. I grew up playing and was really good at second base... Unfortunately I couldn't hit to save my life hahaha!!!
LOL - me, too! I was a second baseman on my high school team, but I was all glove no bat. However, I did develop good bunting skills. Once, the coach put me in to pinch-hit just so he could put on the suicide squeeze.

Baseball is such a fun game. Has a slow pace to it. No clock. But that doesn't mean it isn't chock full of action. One of the hardest things to do in sports is to hit a 100MPH round ball with a round bat.

Always super excited when folks discover the game! There are numerous TH-cam videos that can demonstrate different aspects of the game. There’s a documentary called Fastball that documents the evolution of how hard pitchers throw, some guys throw as hard as 105 miles per hour. As for a specific build for baseball players there is no set height or weight in order to be a successful player, Jose Altuve is 5 foot 6 inches tall and a 165 pounds and is a really good hitter.
Kissinger once said that " baseball is a mental game, because all of the action you see is in your mind". That is because there is a lot of down time before the extremely spectacular play is made. I personally prefers to listen to baseball, that's because when I was younger we used to listen to the games on our transistor radios. The play by play guys had a way of painting a picture that it seemed that you were there, especially during the World Series. I would be in class trying to listen to the game through an earpiece and almost always got caught by the teacher, lol he would confiscate my radio until the end of class and ask me for the score. Great times. As always I enjoy watching your reactions.

My brother played little league baseball. In one game he hit for the cycle. That means he hit a single, double, triple, and home run. If it's hit in order from single to home run it's called a natural cycle. My brother got into a small local newspaper for that.

Batters will wear protection on their and legs that face the pitcher while they are batting. Once they reach base, they will take them off and the bat boy will take the pads back to the dugout.

Marie, check out women's softball as well. Played with a larger ball and underarm pitching. France does have ice hockey, the men's team are ranked 20th in the World. France is also ranked 27th in baseball and 26th in softball. The French American Football team won the 2018 European Championship and they are ranked 4th in the IFAF.

The more you learn about baseball, the more exciting it becomes. To understand the game better, try these three things: 1) Play a "soft catch" with a friend using a real baseball, 2) Spend a few dollars at a "Bat-Away" swinging a bat until you start feeling comfortable, and 3) Attend a real game- at least at the college or minor league level. Have a companion with you who understands (and likes) the game, and can explain what is going on. Even if the game seems to drag, once you really understand it, you will realize there's always something going on, that you can focus on, and appreciate.
In football, all the action-from 'hike to whistle'- can be condensed into 11 minutes or so. Although individual "plays" can be exciting, there are only a finite number of plays and it comes down to which team chooses the 'right play' and performs that 'play' best.
Baseball is played without a clock. Each pitch starts the action, and what happens next has unlimited potential for excitement.
Football 'plays' involve 11 players; only about half are considered "skilled" plalyers. Baseball has nine players, ALL of whom must be skilled.
As different as both games are, each is beautiful, in it's own way.
M - This was a fun reaction! What you saw in the video, however, are extraordinary plays. Most of the game is a duel between the pitcher and each batter. A baseball game has 9 "innings" and each team gets to bat during an inning. If the pitchers are talented, most of the batters "strike out" or hit a foul ball (one that would land outside the left or right boundaries) that is caught by the catcher or one of the other "fielders" on the defensive team. The batting team bats in rotation until three of its players are "out." As others have said, the easiest way to understand the sport is to watch a full game -- with someone who can explain the rules and the significance of what's happening on the field.
After you are reasonably familiar with the game, you must watch Abbott & Costello's early '50s comedy routine "Who's On First." It will be a test of your understanding of baseball AND a lesson in some very confusing English!

I want to give a fairly simple breakdown on how the baseball field works, and the most important mechanics of baseball:
First of all, like you read, there are two teams, and it would be a lot simpler to understand the positions with a picture. Here is what is called the "Baseball Diamond", or "Diamond" for short. This is also referred to as the "In-field", and is where a majority of the action happens.

Each symbol represents a different position on the field, and on a real baseball field, they are referred to as either "bases", or "plates".
Let's start with what each position is called.
Starting with the most important one, home base/plate. I represented this position as the "v" on the diamond. This base is how teams score points by starting there, hitting the ball, and then making a full run around all the bases, and coming back to home base (the actual plate is shaped like a pentagon, resembling a house).
In the center of the diamond, the little dash, is called the "Pitcher's Mound". It is a little hill that elevates the pitcher 10 inches (254 millimeters) above home plate, which is the "v" at the bottom of the diamond. It's raised so that way when the pitcher throws the ball, they can gain more momentum in their throw, compared to if they were standing on flat ground.
To the right of the Pitcher's Mound is first base. If you think of each player on the field as a game piece, and each base as a space for the game pieces to move, then first base is always the first space to move as a player. This makes it the most crucial base to get to in order to have a game piece on the board for potential points.
At the top of the diamond is second base. This is simply the halfway point to get to home base.
To the left of the Pitcher's Mound is third base. It's the most difficult base to get to, and the last stop before you are able to proceed to home base.
The only thing I couldn't really represent in the basic picture is the "Foul Lines". The foul lines run from the two bottom points of the pentagon shaped home base, to the outside edges of first base, and third base, and then run all the way out to that large back wall you see in the videos. They are straight lines, and in order for a ball to be "in play", the ball must fall within those lines when the ball hits the ground. You can really think of these just like how there are out of bounds lines on a football (soccer) pitch/field. If the ball goes outside those lines, the play is dead. The other thing is the outfield. The outfield is just the huge stretch of grass that is between the infield, and the back wall, or "fence".
There are a total of 9 "innings" in baseball, which each inning consists of a "top" and "bottom" half, and the team to bat first is decided by a coin flip. What this means, is when the first team is up to bat, this is considered the top of the inning. The bottom of the inning is when the other team has their turn to bat. Once both teams have a turn to bat, then the next inning starts. Basically, each team will bat a total of 18 times. Within that time, the goal is to score as many points as possible by "Running" the "Batters" into the home plate, within the 3 "outs" you get when your team is at bat. This is known as an "RBI" (Run Batter In).
Each player on the team (9 players) will get a chance to hit the ball that the pitcher throws. The turn order is entirely dependent on how the coach of the team sets up the "Batting Order" before the game begins. The player who is currently attempting to hit the ball is called "At Bat". There is another term you might hear be thrown around called "On Deck". This simply just means the next person to be at bat. The player at bat has a total of 3 attempts to hit the ball within the foul lines. I said it earlier, but I'm explaining it now, this is what's known as the ball "being in play". If the player at bat swings the bat and misses the ball, this is called a "strike". 3 strikes, and the player is "out", meaning he just has to go back to his teams bench and be sad for awhile (I assume they get sad, because I know I did when I played as a kid and didn't hit the ball). However, there is another mechanic called "balls", which I will get to shortly.
Now we have to get a tiny bit more technical just so things can make sense. There is a certain area that the pitcher must aim for in order to successfully pitch a strike. As long as the ball passes over any part of the home plate, and stays within the range between the batters chest and knees, and the batter swings and misses, it's a strike. NOW, anything outside of that area, is where the mechanic "balls" come in. To put it easily, pitcher's technically only have 4 balls to throw in order to attempt to "strike out" the batter. A lot more than 4 balls will be thrown on average depending on how many "foul balls" are hit. If a pitcher throws 4 balls, then the player at bat gets to "walk" to first base. You will also hear "walk" thrown around in this manner, "The pitcher walked the batter". It just means the pitcher threw poorly, and the player at bat got to advance to first base for free. With that being said, a batter can still swing at a pitch that's not within that area (over the home plate, between their chest and knees) and if they miss, they will receive a strike. A "foul ball" is the opposite of a ball that is in play. However, there are a couple special rules with foul balls. The first one being that if the ball is in the air, and outside of the foul line, the ball is still considered to be live, as it hasn't hit the ground yet. If a defensive player catches the ball before it hits the ground outside of the foul line, the batter is out. If this does not happen and the ball hits the ground outside of the foul line, it is counted as a ball against the pitcher, (remember the pitcher only gets 4 balls).
The over-all objective for a batter is to advance on each of the bases without being "tagged out". This happens when a defensive player has control of the baseball in their glove and taps the "runner" with their glove while they are running to a base. If the player gets to a base before they are "tagged", that player is "safe", and cannot be tagged out as long as they have any part of their body on the base. However, there is a thing that will automatically get a player out, and end their running around the bases. If the ball is in the air, like I said before, the ball is live. If a defensive player catches the ball before it hits the ground, then any players not on a base are out. A couple of other terms are "Homerun", and "Grandslam". A homerun occurs when a batter hits the ball within the foul lines, over the back wall, which allows the batter (and any other players on a base) to run freely all the way around the bases back to home plate. A grandslam happens when all three bases have players on them, and the batter hits a home run, allowing a total of 4 points for their team. As you could imagine, Grandslams are pretty difficult to get.
Let's take a quick look at the defensive positions on the field, and wrap this ESSAY of a post up lmao. First, the infield. There is the pitcher, who throws the ball towards the batter. The catcher, who sits behind home plate and catches the thrown pitches. First baseman, who guards first base. The Second baseman, who guards second base, and in between second base and first base. The Third baseman, who guards third base. And then there's also another position in between second and third called the Short-Stop. The short-stops purpose is to act as a line of defense between second base and third base. A quick google search of "Baseball diamond positions diagram" will help draw a picture much more clearly. The outfield consists of 3 positions; Left Field, Center Field, and Right Field. It's pretty self explanatory, of where they are in the outfield. If the ball gets passed the infield defenders, then the three outfielders are there to try and catch the ball to throw it back infield.
There are a couple other commonly used terms for situations like a "pickle". A pickle happens when a runner is caught between 2 bases and is running back and forth between them, trying to not get tagged out by the basemen who are attempting to catch the runner. It's kinda funny when it happens, because they two basemen will just throw the ball back and forth to one another, and it usually ends in the runner trying to jump over a basemen to get to a base. Pickles aren't a good situation to find yourself in. Another term would be stuff like "Fly Ball", or "Ground Ball", which those are pretty easy to understand; fly ball is in the air, ground ball is on the ground. There's also a bunch of different kinds of pitches that the pitcher can throw to affect how the ball travels in the air, and the catcher can feed information to the pitchers through hand gestures (usually between their legs to avoid the opposing side figuring out what it is they are doing). The hand gestures are kind of like a language of their own, and are very simple, and quick to get information to the pitcher quickly. These can range from what the batter is swinging at or not, to what kind of pitch to throw. The "Dug-out" is where the teams have their benches to sit...a bullpen is a place for pitchers to warm up their pitching arms, batting cage is to practice your swings and get warmed up. Uhhhhh.....there's more terminology out there, but this post would be way longer than it already is. I hope I explained everything clearly, and as condensed as I could. If you actually read all of this, I have mad respect for you and your interest in the sport!
I FORGOT TO ADD:
A batter cannot be walked by "fouling away" (hitting the ball outside the foul lines) 4 balls. The batter can foul away 3 balls, and have those balls count against the pitcher, but the 4th ball MUST be thrown by the pitcher and not hit by the batter, outside of that area. (Across home plate, between the chest and knees). That's why I said on average more than 4 balls will be thrown by the pitcher, because sometimes a batter can foul away 6, 7, 8 balls, either waiting to hit the ball inside the foul lines, or waiting for the pitcher to mess up his final throw.
ALSO FORGOT TO ADD:
The other way a runner can get out is if the ball reaches a basemen who has a foot on the base before the runner can get to that base.
Did not know if you knew, but "al a mode" is a phrase used in the US. It usually refers to topping a piece of pie (or other desert) with vanilla ice cream.

Things to know:
To score a point (called a run) you must make it to first base, then second base, then third base, and then to home base. This is worth one point.
If someone is on base and the batter hits the ball, the person on base can advance to the next base or as many bases as they can get to safely.
Hits are made with a wooden club known as a bat. One who has an opportunity to hit is thus called a batter.
The pitcher's job is to throw the ball in such a way (fast, slow, changing speeds, or with movement) so that the batter cannot hit the ball.
The batter's job is to hit the ball and reach base so he can eventually score a point.
If a batter hits the ball and someone catches it before it hits the ground, the batter is out.
If a batter swings at the ball and misses three times in a time at bat, the batter are out.
If a batter hits the ball on the ground and makes it to first base before the ball does, he is safe and gets to stay on base until someone else gets a hit allowing him to advance.
Each team has nine opportunities to bat each game with at least three players batting at each opportunity. If a player is called out, he cannot bat again until everyone else on his team has batted.
A team's opportunity to score points by hitting the ball or batting is called an inning. Each team is allowed three outs per inning before the other team gets to bat.
So in essence each team is trying to get enough hits to score runs and trying to prevent the other team from doing so.
the only way to score is by batting, but you can prevent people from scoring by having them swing unsuccessfully at pitches, catching balls in the air, or throwing the ball to one teammate who is covering a base before the batter reaches that base.
If a person hits the ball beyond the wall in fair territory, it is a home runs and all the people on base plus the batter score a point each.
*The women and girls in the video are called "ball girls" or "ball attendants" and their job is to prevent hard hit balls in foul territory from hitting the fans or making it on to the field of play so the game isn't delayed.
On thing that is hard to understand about baseball watching it on TV is how fast the ball moves and how big the field is. The field is typically between 110-125 meters long and there are only 9 guys covering it. The distance between those white bags are 27.5 meters and the baseball is almost always moving faster than 145km/h.
Marie, American baseball has been played in France since the First World War. It is played by both men and women. In fact, in 2019 the French women's team defeated the Nederlands for the European Championship. It's available on U-Tube in the US so you should be able to find it in France. Check it out and go see a game. I would bet there is probably a team near you.
Baseball is something that's popularly known as America's Pastime, although it's popular in other countries as well. A lot of the best players play in Major League Baseball (MLB), which is consisted of 30 teams divided into two leagues, American and National. The best team in each league meet at the end of the season in the World Series, a best-of-seven series to determine the championship.
The team I pay most attention to is the Toronto Blue Jays, mainly because I live in Canada and it is presently the only Canadian franchise. There was once the Montreal Expos, but they have since relocated to Washington, DC.
Some of the well known teams include the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Chicago Cubs for example.
At the top of the 7th inning, the fans do what's called the seventh inning stretch, during which they take part in the tradition of singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame". It's a tradition that stretches back a number of decades.

My favorite thing about explaining baseball to folks unfamiliar with it is watching as they wrap their minds around the fact that the DEFENSE has the ball. Baseball as a game is more than a little unusual in that regard.
Unlike American Football, Baseball is an extremely international game. French Guiana, which I guess is kind of like France's Alaska, is playing baseball a lot more.
I would say basketball is far more internationally than baseball, but baseball is the number one sport in Japan, and is very popular in south Korea.

It's more than just watching a ballgame; it's enjoying a hot dog, beer, and cracker jacks with your family and/or friends. It is chatting with the strangers in the seats next to you. It is the entire stadium singing arm in arm, "Take me out to the ballgame" during the 7th inning stretch. It may sound strange to you, but when I am at Dodger Stadium watching my hometown Los Angeles Dodgers, I feel like I am home.

France has a National Baseball team that competes in the World Baseball Classic, European Baseball Championship and the World Cup of Baseball. The Netherlands has a professional Baseball league and so does Italy. Over 50 countries have some form organized Baseball leagues. The now defunct Montreal Expos played for largely French speaking fan base. You may be able to find some old Expos game broadcasts in French on youtube.
You need to watch a NHL game. That is one of the most entertaining sports out there.

It may seem confusing at first but by the time you have watched all nine innings you will have a pretty good grasp of the game. The next thing to do is to actually play a game just for fun. Baseball at it's core is a really simple game but it's one of the hardest games to fully understand
In baseball, you score by how many complete runs you make - which is running all around the bases (the white squares), starting and ending at the base from where the batter hits the ball (home base). The other bases are first base, second base and third base. The team in the field tries to get the team that is hitting the ball off the field so they can have their turn to make runs. They need to get three "outs" in order for that to happen. There are several ways that this can happen. When a ball is caught in mid air is an out. If a batter swings at the ball and misses, that is a strike and if the batter receives three strikes, that is an "out". If a runner is tagged with the ball while running to a base, that is also an out. There are a maximum of nine "innings" in a game. An "inning" is when both teams have had a chance to make runs. There are many other rules, but, that is basically how the game is played. I hope it helps you understand a little bit better.

Baseball is easily my favorite sport. It's more like a lifestyle. It's something you can have on in the background while you're cleaning or doing something else. Doesn't have to always demand your attention. But when you do, you can see all kinds of nuances and meta games if you know the rules well. There are 162 games in a season plus the playoffs each year. And it's probably the most stat-driven sport there is. Baseball has stats for everything and you can accurately predict how players will do in certain situations based on their history playing.

Marie...You are now talking my sport..thank you for your time in just taking a look at it.....to be quick.. there are 3 outs per team to an ining . there are 9 inings to a game unless there is a tie ... more on that later... to get an out. pitcher throws the ball to start the ining to the the guy that is squatted down...there is a batter with the stick which is called the hitter trying to hit the ball thrown in between the 2 whites lines to be in play... to make an out ... the fielders that are behind the pitcher can catch a ball in the air before it hits the ground that is an out... Or if a batter hits the ball on the ground... the fielder will catch the ball and throw it to 1st base ( one of the white squares on the ground) before the batter running down to first base ....If the ball reaches before the batter can touch the base he is out .... after 3 of these outs in any of those ways they change sides and the team that was fielding now are the team batting... how you score .... there are 3 of the bases in a diamond shape on the field and base right in front of the catcher and batter called home plate ...You have to go all the way around the bases and try to get home plate before the 3 outs are made...also to get of make an out is you are off one of the bases and you are tagged with the ball by a fielder you are out also...Sorry this is much longer than i wanted to be....I hope this gives you a little bit of understanding....

In English: They need "quick reactions." The batter has to "read" the pitch (the ball coming at him from the pitcher) and swing the bat to connect with the ball. The pitchers have many pitches that move in different directions, so the primary battle is between the Pitcher and the Batter. If the batter hits the ball it is up to the fielding players to attempt to get the batter out by catching a fly ball (a ball hit in the air and caught before it hits the ground), or fielding a ball that has touched the ground and throwing it to a team mate (first baseman, second baseman, third baseman) to tag the batter (now runner) before he reaches the "bag" (first base, second base, etc.). First base is special because it has what is called a "force out"-the fielder does not need to "tag" (touch with the ball) the runner. He just needs to have his foot on the base while holding the ball before the runner reaches the base. With second base, third base and home plate, the fielder must "tag" the runner to get him "out". There are three "outs" in an inning; three offensive player must be made out. Each team gets to be the batting team each inning, and they continue to bat (with multiple batters) until the fielding team has gotten three "outs" by catching fly balls or tagging players. There are nine innings per game. Scoring is achieved by moving base runners around the bases; when a runner makes it around all the bases back to home plate (where the batting takes place), he is said to have scored a "run". If at the end of nine innings both teams have scored the same number of runs, they go into "extra innings" and continue play until one team finishes an inning with more runs than than the opponent. I was at a Major League (MLB: Major League Baseball) game that lasted until after 2:00 a.m in the morning-15 innings. Baseball is a "simple" game, but there is a lot of strategy employed, making it very nuanced. It can be viewed as a "slow" game because so many players seem to be just standing around a lot, but it is punctuated by very explosive action and tremendous athletic skills. They say that hitting a pitched ball (some going more than 100 miles per hour) with a bat is the most difficult achievement in sports.

A lot of the "ball girls" (sitting down the right and left sides of the field) in the first video you showed just happened to be with the San Diego Padres (my home town team!). They have some of the most skilled ball girls in the league. I see them make great catches like that all the time.
When I was young, from 4th grade on you took your ball glove to school so if the weather was nice you could play baseball during recess...sadly the schools today don't have baseball diamonds anymore.

Detroit Tigers fan here. One of the last 8 original teams that are also still in their original city in Major league baseball. Originally they go back to the late 19th century. Baseball as we know it was originally a british game called rounders.
Comes from a game called townhall which evolved from a British children's game called rounders, which is still played.

So like the other people are saying, it is a simple yet complicated game. you have 4 bases(white squares). You run to each base in a diamond shape. The objective: (simple form) is to run to all the bases before your team loses their turn is up(called: Out). Each player gets a try to run to all bases before their turn is over. Each player has three times to hit the ball hard enough so they can run to all the bases before getting caught. The video you watched showed people hitting the ball, but the ball was caught so their individual turn is over(out). So how many Outs are there? The total of outs for a team is 3. Then it goes to the other team to do the same thing. 3outs for a person( 3 strikes(not hitting the ball)=1out, 3 outs for the team. 9 Innings(Inning: the 2 teams have 1 turn) EAch team has 9 times to gain as many Runs around the diamond as possible.

Baseball is a very popular sport for kids in America and is often the first sport a lot of kids learn. I started playing when I was I think 4 when I joined what we call a "little league".
I agree with those who have recommended that you watch a game. I will give you the link to one VERY SPECIAL game that occurred in 1995. It is a great game for first timers to watch because it shows everything about the game, including how special the game of baseball is to us Americans. It will show you the very best of American baseball on one of its very best nights I'll work on finding a DVD for you.
Baseball has a lot of rules that are simple, some that are not so simple, and some that are completely obscure.
Two examples I have are how runners can get out and balks for pitchers.
The rules around how to get out are simple to not so simple. There are multiple ways for a player to get out. Some examples would be strike out (looking or swinging) force out, fly out, missing a base, picked off, and passing a preceding runner along with many others.
An example of more obscure set of rules for the sport would be when the pitcher commits a balk. The pitcher can ball in multiple ways. Stopping the motion (so if a pitcher steps off the rubber with his back foot would be an example), failing to come set, committing an improper pick off move (another smaller set of rules), dropping the ball while on the rubber, and the pitcher’s hat falling off are all ways for a pitcher to commit a balk. Every time the pitcher balks, any runners on base will advance and the batter will be awarded an additional ball call. So a team could lose the Game 7 of the World Series because his hat fell off when there was a runner on third base....
I had a German professor in college whose son moved here with her and he began to love baseball! The Netherlands actually has a good baseball team!
I always tell people who say that baseball is boring. Its like chess. You position your players to not let the opposing players advance. Its all about knowing the opposing team's strength and weakness, and then have your players combat that and win.
There are four common ways to get an offensive player out:
- By a defender catching a ball hit off the bat before it hits the ground (a fly out - why you see so many defenders jumping and diving to catch it)
- By a player having a ball at a base a runner is required to run to before he gets there (a force out - why players pick up ground balls and throw them to first base, where the batter is forced to run to)
- By a defensive player with the ball tagging a runner between bases (a tag out - why you see runners juking and jumping to get around the defender without being touched)
- By a batter getting three strikes while at bat (a strikeout).
Each offensive team gets three outs in their half of an inning and then it's the other team's turn. Away team bats first each inning (the top half of an inning) and the home team second (bottom half), so say if it's the bottom of the fifth, it's the home team's turn to bat for the fifth time.
I'll echo what someone else commented, watching a game or maybe even a few innings of a game would help you understand some of the basics as well as the overall flow of the game. It's a slower game overall, but baseball to me is a great sport, especially seeing it in-person or watching meaningful games.
I personally have always found baseball boring but you have actually made it exciting!

There are many great baseball movies that you may want to watch and/or react to. Bull Durham is a classic, Major League, A League of Their Own, The Bad News Bears, Eight Men Out, 61*, The Sandlot, The Natural, Field of Dreams. Maybe have a poll to see which one maybe to react to. All are great in their own right. We Americans can answer any questions you may have about Baseball or American Football.
Look up Ken Griffey Jr highlights. He was one of the best offensive and defensive players of all time. And most of all he was a Seattle Mariner, my favorite team :)
I feel bad for Mariner fans. During the Griffey, A-Rod, Edgar Martinez era, Seattle had one of the most talented teams in baseball history. Unfortunately, the Yankees always seemed to be their kryptonite. The Mariners were such a fun team to watch back then.
Professional Baseball employs ball kids similar to the way tennis does, though their job is to catch balls likely to go into the stands that are close enough the ball may be traveling fast enough to seriously harm a spectator(full nets down the sideline were implimented in 2020 after a child was put into a coma from being hit by a foul ball.
Baseball is the only major sport where the defense controls the ball.
