They are expensive, but nothing is worth more than preventing severe injury to you or your family. Yankum Ropes makes kits for heavy ag equipment. Please take a look at them. I pray you do.

Great story at the end to remind everyone the DANGER of ropes/chains breaking.
My neighbor wasn't so lucky and DIED in his tractor cab. Chain broke hooked to a rope, through back window, hit him between the shoulders and out the front window. A wreaker was called in to winch the tractor and equipment out. Take time to think what can possibly go wrong. Your life.

Best thing to use for safety pulling out big equipment is a couple old car tires. Run the strap through the tires when hooking up so they are suspended in the air. When it breaks they absorb a lot of energy and are heavy enough to direct the chain/strap down.

Seen my Dad do this all the time, what he eventually built was a lift on a wheel for the implement hitch. Then he pulled on the tractor which would pull it out and the implement could remain in the stuck hole. Once the tractor was out then they would team together straps onto the implement which should be out of the ground prior to getting the tractor out. Often this went pretty smooth, we had a lot of spots which looked dry but where loose underneath.

Ropes and straps can be just as bad as chain. The problem isn't the hard metal bits, the problem is the elastic energy contained in the line when under strain. The longer the line, the more energy(for a given material and breaking stress). Nylon ropes are very dangerous because nylon is very elastic and usually breaks at about 2 times its original length, but for the same reason nylon is good at absorbing shock loads. UHMWPE(amsteel, dyneema), vectran, and technora have become popular in maritime for lower stretch applications while being lighter than steel cable for crew handling reasons.
The underlying idea of wrapping a jacket around a line to dampen the energy release is sound, but you need at least two placed at thirds( to dampen each half) and a parka is only heavy enough for a little 3/16 chain. You need way more damping mass for the strain those tractors can generate.
Dampening a broken chain would be a good place for a smallish nylon rope, run it next to the chain and tie them together every couple feet loose around the rope but through a link of the chain. The rope is normally slightly slack to carry no load, but if the chain breaks the rope catches it. By smallish I would estimate a bit more than 1/2 of the chain size, so 5/16 or 3/8 inch nylon rope along a 1/2" chain (Size ratio not officially tested or fully calculated)

There was a guy who stopped to help someone else in a Pickup. They tied a chain to his Receiver with the Ball. The Receiver pin snapped came back and nailed the guy right in the head. Killed him instantly. Never use chains, and don’t tie onto your Class III Receiver. Use Soft Shackles if you can and something like a Yankum Rope.

Your chain story brings back bad memories..
Not sure if I told you this story or if it was on welkers tube.. My uncle was killed in a very similar incident.. First summer I didn't work on the farm.. We had this crazy stupid tow rope from the rigs.. each end was looped with a chain thru the loops. He always taught me, to help minimize the risk ( I was only 17 when this happened), always wrap under & over the axle, so if the hook on the chain broke, it should technically hit the ground. Well, it was a hot day.. the A/C in the international wasn't working properly. He was breaking a field that had been hay for who knows how long. It was also beside a bay of the lake.. So, typical farmer, 1 more pass next to the water & it'll be ok.. Nope.. got stuck.. Walked back to the house (this happened in july of 87 & he wasn't a big farmer by any means.. like 350 acres). He came back with the old case.. I believe late 60s, maybe early 70's.. no cab. He hooked up.. put the 2 oldest boys in the international.. nice hydraulic clutch that was easy for them to push.. gave them instructions on what to do.. Did a yank, chain broke on the international side... he knew it was coming cause from the injuries he suffered, it seems he brought his arm up to try to protect his head.. broke his arm, shattered his skull... pretty much instantaneously unconscious/brain dead. He slumped over the steering wheel, tractor going in circles.. the boys shut down the international, chased the case, managed to jump on & shut it down.. 1 of them ran back to the house to tell their mom.. They were 6/8 or 7/9 yrs old... He was brought in to town, then immediately sent to Edmonton.. We drove in from Brooks into what is known as Black friday, the edmonton tornado..
Sorry for the long story... towing safety is a big thing..
I now work in Ft Hills Oilsands mine & drive haul trucks.. These things get stuck on a regular basis.. We used to use "mankillers" - braided cables.. now we use the nylon tow straps.. much safer..
Be safe guys... you obviously learned by experience also..
