When I was much younger (when dinosaurs ruled the earth :-)) I thought it would be wonderful to live in (say) DC or NY and be able to go listen to speeches ans panels, by people in the know. NOW I sit here in my little apartment and can do this. I find this absolutely remarkable!
I feel the same way. I am on the other side of the Atlantic and not quite from the dinosaur era, but I also find it remarkable that I now have access to things like these.

Back in the late 70's I subscribed to a magazine (I forget the title...I have Someheimer's :-)), once a week I'd get small clips from newspaper from around the world. Today if I want to know what's happening in Kazakhstan...Fiji...etc, its all right here on my computer. A mere 30 years ago we could not really be having this conversation.
The best is Gresham College in the UK. They have a TH-cam channel but also an independent site where you can download both video or audio. Gresham has been delivering public lectures since the time of Elizabeth I. Top drawer!

It is a mixture of , is he reliable, does he seem sincere, has he been evasive, has he been proven to lie at least once ? perceptions like lives beyond his means would be factors. In a way it is an unofficial polygraph with the attestor being both the subject and the polygraph technician.
Spying is neat and all, and we spend a ton of money on it, but there are entire shelves of books in the library on target nations that go completely un-read. Anthropologists and economists and historians and linguists pore over foreign cultures and the stuff gets filed away unnoticed by anyone except their academic peers. I know this because the reading lists of our top decisionmakers are woefully inadequate and they show no advanced understanding of the culture of their opponents. From Vietnam onward we hire think tanks to write custom books that justify one or another position. If we took the time to study the world, we would spend a lot less blood and treasure fighting in it. The Brits and the French, now those are people who study a problem first. Even the Russians.

When discussing Ames, she calls him a "traitor" and speaks with derision regarding him. It doesn't seem she would have had any problem giving Ames the death penalty, but when speaking about the Russians receiving the death penalty from their government she starts to cry. What's the difference between the Soviets and Ames? From my (non American) perspective they're exactly the same but just on different sides.
