    Thanks for another great podcast; I look forward to all your new episodes. I've been a CR subscriber for several years, and trust you do your best to report on the best products with an unbiased opinion. Is there anyway you can prove to the CR haters your credibility that you don't hate American companies, exclusively love Japanese companies, or get paid off by manufacturers? I know haters are going to hate, but I feel so many people are completely ignorant about your testing procedures or even how you acquire your cars. I can't say I hear nearly as much negative criticism with other major car publications who typically report similar findings and observations as you guys.

    The base 1973 Corvette got 190 HP from 5.7 liters. Today a Honda Accord gets 185 HP from 2.4 liters. It is inevitable that engines will continue to get smaller with fewer cylinders as technology progresses.

    In regards to what +Bradley Freeman said, US gallons are 3.79 Liters whereas Imperial british gallons are 4.55 Liters;this might be one of the reasons for the great difference in MPG

    Hi, great show. Note my new Ghibli S Q4 came with Dunlops Sport Maxx RT as the 19 inch sizes just came out. I do not regret the PZero of the test car. Around 20 deg.C ambient, the quite Duns show better grip on wet roundebouts and corners but slightly less strait line rigidity, a genuine good comfort 19 inch non RFT tyres set in line with the car style. The Q4 w/skyhook turns flat (almost) like a low and balanced 2014 Panamera 4S and far better than oversteering S7, with maybe 20% more g lateral and all 4 wheels working hard. Not the fun of a light R8, but good 4 doors value & much better driving efficiency than std german station wagon platforms and overpowered rubber grinders. Happy old owner.

    Gabe says about the 3-cyl Fiesta, "...I can't more than 31-32 mpg on my commute with it and that pretty much what you get with a Mazda3 or a Mazda6 or Honda Accord for that matter." Agreed, in the absence of other benefits, the 1L Ecoboost wouldn't be easily justified. But, I'm pretty certain that the turbo 3-cyl offers broad torque characteristics that, when combined with the 300 lb weight advantage the Ford has over the Mazda3, produce more responsive acceleration and a more athletic driving feel. Gabe did look a bit sheepish when he later admitted to being very impressed by the Fiesta (defending in against the Elantra) and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that he has been "testing" it on his commute to the detriment of fuel economy.

    For a city car, 3 or 4 cyls are good enough. For a sports car though I am worried about the trend to go from naturally aspirated 6cyl (I, H or V) to turbo-4. The numbers may look better but the driving experience is normally worse...
    Speaking of 6 cyl, what did you guys do to the Porsches? (new 911 991 and the 981 Boxster)?

    "Why should I haul around the engine?"
    Because most people can't afford to have a second car. If I own a Leaf and need to drive 200 miles, I need to rent a car. If I have a Volt, I just get in and drive.

  • @SodaPopin5ki
    @SodaPopin5ki 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    In regards to the Volt, unlike a pure EV, it can be your only car. My commute just barely fits into the EV range, but on weekends for longer drives, the range extender does its thing, and I can go hundreds of miles.
    If I only had a pure EV, I'd have to rent a gas car for the weekends.

    We hear all the raves on Car and Driver, Motor Trend etc. about the up and coming Mustangs, but would be interested to hear a sane discussion of what to expect. How much better will the IRS be above the live axle? Will the Ecoboost 4 cyl be a game changer in terms of overall weight, weight distribution and power delivery over the rev range? Does the Coyote V8 need much work or is a carry over fine? What models are Consumer Report considering buying?

    I think the Jeep Renagade looks cool. Many people just want to go down a muddy road to go camping or hunting and they are not interested in tearing their new car up rock climbing and doing dumb shit. And it is trail rated so that's cool. Myself I try to go around the worst obstacles rather than trying to go over them. If you want to rock climb buy the Wrangler. Also I think the 2.4 184hp engine should do well in a small rig like the Renagade.

    On Fords' UK website, the Fiesta is marketed as getting up to 65.7 MPG with the 1.0L engine. In America, the same car is claimed to get up to 45 MPG. And on Top Gear UK, Richard Hammond commented that he was "having trouble getting under 60 MPG" with it, when CR only gets ~35. Why do American cars get horrible fuel economy when compared to the same car sold everywhere else in the world? The Fiesta isn't the only car this applies to. The Ford Fusion/ Mondeo, and the Acura TSX/ Honda Accord Euro all differ by over 10 MPG, even though they are equivalent in size, weight, and power train.

    I was wondering about the cost of repair and 5-10 year reliability of Mercedes vehicles. I am considering saving up for a 4-5 year old used S-class due to just loving the new design. Would I need to save up the equivalent of a Mazda 3 for repairs if I bought such a car? Btw, love these shows, great info. Thanks.

    • @fatboy19831

      Buy a 3 year old car under warranty. See how it holds up. If you have problems sale. If not enjoy the long ride. If you can afford one new. A used one is a bargain. If not I would try another brand. Having said that. No other car drives like a Mercedes. There are plenty of non dealer repair shops that do excellent work for a fraction of the cost. If you are driving a Japanese or American car learn to change your prospective of what a normal repair bill is. Most of my friends sale before 130,000 miles that is when the electronic bugs become most problematic. Others have Mercedes from the 90's with over 200,000 miles on them that are for the most part trouble free.

      The $29 for access to the CR's reliability data is well worth the more. Also look at JD Power and Intellichoice. As per fatboy, certified (CPO) programs on a 3yr car just off lease can mean peace of mind especially with a tech packed car (read the warranty small print, make sure everything is covered).

    Corolla and Civic with larger engines and heavier bodies get better highway fuel numbers than that turbo 3 banger that you can carry on a plane, please Ford stop trying to make people think that your engineering is superior to the others.

    • @fatboy19831
      @fatboy19831 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Corolla and the Civic no longer drive better than the Fiesta. In fact it is not even close. The Fiesta is a lighter, better riding and handling car. It is also a more solid car. Only in long term reliability do the Japanese competition still pull ahead.

    • @pedrof830
      @pedrof830 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a matter of opinion, more sporty, better handling yes,but for long distance driving comfort, I'll take the larger, more substantial compacts over the subcompact any day.

    • @fatboy19831
      @fatboy19831 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you are correct it is a matter of opinion. I am 6.5 feet tall 205 pounds. I own a 2005 Corolla. My wife drives it mostly. It is painful for me after 45 min. The driving position is horrible. I cant fit in the new 14 at all. The windshield is too racked. I only see the headliner at a traffic light. I had the same problem with the Civic till the 2013 redesign. The Fiesta has an almost useless back seat and a horrible dash design. The Driving position is gold. You actually sit in a seat not the pillow on the floor feeling I get in the Japanese cars. The Fiestas ride is firm but solid and smooth especially at speed. The car seems to be made to move fat tall Germans at speed comfortably.

    I love how you guys are raving about the Impala; I'm from Australia and we're scared about pathetic cars like the Impala when we can pick up much better cars such as the Holden Commodore (Chevy SS), Ford Falcon. A cheap four cylinder Falcon starts at under $30K US, and a 470bhp performance Falcon for $45K US. Finally there is the one of the best performance sedans in the world (according to Wheels Magazine), the $76K US HSV GTS. One thing to note is that the prices I've put are just exchanging the Australian Price to US currency at an exchange rate of 82 US cents to one Australian Dollar.

    • @kitgerhart8749
      @kitgerhart8749 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We Americans can't buy the Falcon, and the Commodore is sold only as the Chevy SS, an expensive, high powered car with the 6.2 litre V8 as the only engine choice. A well equipped Impala is much less expensive. Yeah, the high powered rear driver is a lot more fun than an Impala, but the Impala is a great car, as a transportation appliance.

    Ford could have used the EcoBoost 3 cylinder engine for a smaller hybrid vehicle below the Fusion Hybrid, such as Focus hatchback Hybrid. Without the Hybrid powertrain, the 3 cylinder EcoBoost engine will get lower fuel economy. Toyota and Honda are planning to put turbo engines in their hybrids.

    Coming in late here... CR dudes: you guys discount the Volt because it can't be all electric, then berate it because it hauls around a generator. You don't get that when you average it out, it becomes the most efficient car for most people. Read the comments in the thread on gm-volt.com, "Consumer Reports still struggling with the Volt". The Volt is a unique and versatile car. But you guys still apparently fail to get it.

    Those fuel economy stats are disappointing. I was willing to overlook Ford's misrepresentation of the C-Max but this is starting to look like a pattern. Having said that my 2013 Fiesta has a 1.6 liter Duratec and it gets better gas mileage than what you're claiming.

  • @burrmotsi
    @burrmotsi 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    With respect to the Chevy Volt, contrary to what these loons would have you think, it's definitely not "all in the driving pattern". Of course you could say this about any car comparison. If you want to always drive over 100 MPH then a Corvette will get better MPG than a Prius. But no one in their right mind would say the "it's all in the driving pattern" for the simple reason that you make comparisons based on expected driving patterns not some zebra one.
    The DOE has spent a lot of money finding out how the Chevy Volt works in practice. What is has found is that 90% of Volt get better than 75 MPG and over 20% get over 400 MPG. You can find these numbers in the official Idaho National Lab report here: avt.inl.gov/pdf/EVProj/VoltPercMiinEVModeAug2013.pdf How many Prius drivers get MPG like this? Yeah, that would be zero percent. In fact the MPG numbers for a Prius are closer to a Ford 150 than the Volt is to the Prius. Just a completely different universe as far as MPG is concerned.
    Shoddy and disappointing information from people who claim to give you good information. Not sure if this deserves a Pinocchio -- lying and just not being informed are not the same. I'd hope this is the latter and not the former.

    31 to 35 mpg out of the Fiesta 3 cly is sad. The problem is it must always be on boost to get its excellent response. The Altima and Accord CVTs can do much better. Driving a rented Altima over 3 days my average was 39 mpg. The Camry 4 (mostly highway) 34.5 mpg. My BRZ manual averages 31.5 in the summer time. It will average 34.5 mpg at 70 mph. The Fit and the Mazda 2 don't do any better mileage wise than the Fiesta 3 in the real world ether. Both are slower lighter cars.

    I'm long time subscriber to CR but if your the quality of reviewer I need to rethink my subscription.
    Do you guys even hear yourself speak. Read over the transcript and you will understand what I am talking about.
    I mean its it can be an electric or I think a lot of people I can
    19:09and at this point you know that the average commute is 25 minutes 16 miles
    19:14so you know a lot of people could just well we don't know you wanna
    19:18cover more than the average I mean eighty percent of Americans drove
    19:22forty miles to to to work and you know ninety-something drive 50 miles our
    19:27model was based on
    19:29fifty miles a day and that means you know what 35-mile range
    19:33about 70 percent electric and the 30 per cent gas so
    19:36that's our composite here so
    19:40I think a we are more just helping more people here
    Your just making up facts out of the clear blue air without regard with accuracy. that's helping people. Oh yes I could pull another 1/2 dozen malapropos and inaccurate numbers from you little excuse for expert review but why bother.
    But then definition of being green can have so many parameters and you shift to whatever is popping into your brain at the time your speaking. Would asking so hard to have a solid baseline in which to really base it on or as if with anything green several baselines. One size does not fit all.But CR never really understood the green movement which is the saddest part of this entire episode.

    Why can't cars get the fuel economy they did in the past? I bought a honda civic 5 speed 1983 and got from 42 to 44 miles per gallon. I had a 1993 dodge dynasty 3.3 6 cylinder and got from 32 to 35 miles . I hear them bragging now when they get 36 miles. What's up with that it seems like the longer they build cars the worse it gets...
