+nightmuffin937 Well the Nerd did PS2 and Dreamcast games when the PS3 and Xbox 360 were out, and now the PS4 and Xbox One are out so the PS3 and Xbox 360 are retro technically, so the Nerd could definetly do them
Jeffrey Stevens I find it funny how people think that Mike knows everything about the game and automatically knows that Solaire is popular, he may haven't known about Solaire in this review, don't blame him.
james and mike's modern game reviews are my favourite, they play these games just any other human being would. they are not familiar with games at the beginning.
So funny when you're talking about the stingy pots in the game..... The clip shows you smashing a whole group of pots - all but the one that actually had something inside it haha.
Thanks to this video I decided to buy this game and I'm extremely happy I did. This game is AMAZING. Yeah, it's difficult but that's one of the things that makes it great. Most games are too easy nowadays..
The game is currently $4.99 for Gold members on the Xbox Marketplace. Just figured I'd share that information if you're looking into picking it up for the console.
great review, i hate the reputation this game has gotten about its difficulty, it has a learning curve ill give you that, like all games, but all enemies hit really hard, so you just gotta be careful and pay attention to your surroundings
Y'know what would make this game easier? _Using the lock-on function_. Not once in this entire video did I see you use it, and watching you flail about missing swings while in combat was painful...
OmNomNomNomNom I'm sorry, but what you just said is absolute garbage. When you say that Dark Souls lock-on doesn't work and is actually more of a nuisance I have to question whether you've even played the game, because the only time it's not useful is against some of the larger bosses or occasionally in PvP.
+Ross Morton More experienced players tend to not use lock-on. Try playing the game without it, you'll notice that dealing with enemies is often easier. Enemies are programmed to adapt to the player locking on, but if you're just quickly zipping and rolling around them and slashing at them from behind their shields and going for backstabs, they have trouble keeping up with you. Also, using lock-on near lethal pits can spell disaster, as attacking while locked on to an enemy that suddenly moved closer to the edge can actually cause you to fall to your death.
This game has that twist of frustration of the classic NES games and the reward factor of the modern games, thanks to all those work you need to put on. I wonder how it would feel playing Dark Souls 20 years later, because this *IS* the epitome of a perfect game... Well, on my perspective of course.
Man, the skeleton path is a classic experience I think all DS players had. I heard the game was hard, and when I got there I just assumed thats how hard it was going to be and got really discouraged for a bit.
***** Most situations and bosses are easier to fight while locked on to. Only on very big boss fights will it be a hindrance like seath or the iron golem. There is virtually no need to do so, you just need to be sprinting through legs or to the side and usually doesn't even require any dodging.
The game is only extremely hard the first go, maybe if you switch classes you might make it hard on yourself. I love the game, it's a unique game that doesn't hold your hand.
I have seen lots of people, including a lot of footage in this exact video, of people trying to play this game without lock on. I watched many people streaming die over and over again to zombies, because they weren't using the lock on. You would be surprised at how many people don't know about it.
I found it was much easier with the lock on than without. But yeah, still a very difficult game, but I have trouble seeing how people can be stuck for months.
ye it's easier but not like, easier you know? you still gotta kite and kill them x_x and months? all im gonna say is anor lando :x and ng+ i've been stuck on those places for 4months x3 you know the part where you get to the painting and the part with the archers x_x holy hell it's hard! I was stuck there for half a year, litelry, played 1 hour a day trying to beat it :c I mean, with parts like that scadered around the game, no directions AND hard enemies and just piss you off, it's not so hard to see how poeple get stuck for long periods of time :/ tho, still epic as shit! cant wait for dark souls 2 x_x can't wait to get stuck in the tutorial again haha
The longest I was stuck on anything was the final boss, and that was only a few days. I just gave up for a week, came back, and my first attempt I beat him without getting touched. >.> Parry dagger ftw.
It really isn't as hard as everyone says, it may seem impossible to begin with if you are getting your ass kicked by basic monsters but you will get used to it and move on. You gotta stick with it though man, I did and it has been a really rewarding game for me... that said... I do like to beat the hardest games I find ie Call of Duty World at War Cod 4 Gears insane solo runs etc.
pietufin nope. never have. have almost 100 hours on the DS 1 pc version and have literally had zero problems, yet enjoyed better graphics, a higher frame rate, etc... literally zero problems. i realize its not the same DS 1 as was released at launch, but the prepare to die edition on PC is the best.
SameBasicRiff The only problem I had was exiting the bonfire menu. If I spam the B button (yes I use a 360 controller) the bonfire menu is gone but my character will still sit there and the game thinks I'm still in the bonfire menu. I can't do anything and I have to restart the game.
you probably already know this but its pronounced zveihander, its german for two-hander since two in german is zwei, also its a really great early weapon when you have enough strength
This game is not "impossible" or really incredibly different. It's just so unique and different, it forces you to ditch everything you thought you knew about gaming for a whole knew thought process. You have to tackle this game in a very different way than any other game. Most players aren't prepared for this and jump right in; the consequences are detrimental.
Dark Souls 2 was a great game, it had beautiful environments and was very open, only people that hate it are the ones who really only care about game mechanics. Even Nioh is hella drab and colorless when compared.
laxlightjp Yeah Demon's souls runs the best of the lot. Dark Souls is slower on PS3 and my god Dark Souls 2 PS3 framerate is pathetic. Clearly xbox 360 was the lead platform on the later games.
RetroSimon not sure about DS1, but ik that on dark souls 2, the ps3 had lower framerates at launch but the 360 version didn't have v-sync and also had corruption issues.
I love this video You guys really know how to appreciate a great game Your points were very well laid out and extremely sensical. I just love how you immediately understood this game :)
Haha, you're playing this game just like when I first played Dark Souls. That graveyard, lol. I'm on my second play through now, this game is dope. Decent review, although it was kinda hard to watch.
Very late to the Cinemassacre party and was curious to see if any of you guys (specifically Mike) and was hyped to see this. I see there are a few streams/vids on Cinemassacre Plays. Looking forward to seeing how far you got!
Game is not hard, its just don't hold your hand. As you progress and learn enemies attack patterns it is pretty easy to dodge/block them and punish their windup or post-hit delay.
If you try to rush through the game and don't learn how to use the items you have the game can be overly hard. But once you slow down and learn to use what you're given the game gets a lot easier for sure.
Dark Souls II does have a difficulty setting. You can make the game go from super hard (traditional souls gameplay) to really f*cking hard. (Friendly phantoms removed and enemies hit harder) No easy setting though, that's a good thing.
This game's leveling system reminds me a lot about System Shock 2. You always stress about the choices you make, feel like what ever you choose it's always the wrong choice, and putting points in resistance is the dumbest thing to you can do. And your gear is what matters.
"I was playing the game for about an hour, and I got really far (at the Taurus demon)" that was my first experience playing the game as well. looking back now I have no idea how that took me an hour
well, all you really need to do is kill every ghost once the proper way, then use the trick. The ghosts that drop the black bow of pharis, and a certain valuable ring only spawn once.
werewolf873 not to be an ass or anything, but your point is flawed, because Pharis won't run after you no matter how hard you try to get him to run after you. He'll just stand there with his bow and shoot you
St. Haborym The drakes are decendants of the dragons, just like the wyverns. A dragon IN DARK SOULS LORE is much bigger, and they have impenetrable scales which makes them very tough. Drakes are much smaler, they are very much killable. You don't need to look at the meaning of the word, they are different creatures of different sizes. Notice how Kalameet has a lot of health, and how he's much bigger than the Helkite drake. Yeah, LORE!
Con Cahill Fighting Sif before you get the Lordvessel is pointless unless you want to get a ring which you cant even use until 3/4 through the game to fight the four kings. You're supposed to fight Quelaag to open Sen's Fortress.
Jeremy Ceill You can go to fight the four keys as soon as you get that ring. After that you can go kill the guy in the red clothing take the key off his body drain the water and go fight them.
True, true, but to me that seems like a beginners trap (similar to the graveyard) and to me, that is why dark souls is quite an excellent game similar to Spelunky in the sense of a cruel learning curve.
Damn, Mike. Atleast learn the basic controls (like locking onto enemies by pressing right click) before you talk about the difficulty. Ah well, I did the same thing atleast in the beginning but to get into the forest and gargoyle sections without it, no wonder you were struggling! And no mention of the online play or the game-world and how it all connects? As a big castlevania/metroid fan, this was the biggest draw to the game for many of us.
To late I'm glad I did I'm loving the first one just got the black knight great sword and killed the gargoyles , I'm going into the forest next I think near the blacksmiths Excellent game very rewarding now I can't wait to play the next one
Really, dark souls two is your favorite? I haven't played demon souls but I beat dark souls and so far dark souls one is much better than dark souls two for me. Dark souls two is easier, especially with the boss fights. Dark souls one just had his feel to it, like the game was only for the strongest players. Dark souls two feels like anyone can beat it if they keep trying. I am just up to the iron keep so far but dark souls one was AMAZING at the begining. I hope their is some ornstein and smough equivalent in dark souls two.
I'm down in blight town now trying to kill the spider boss , run out of moss so can't even get across to her without getting poisoned now There's a thin line between loving this game and throwing my controller out the window lol
I like the game, its that some of its fan base are really immature little child, that really get on my nerves. Calling people "causal" for playing in one particular way or having a particular build. Please if ya are so "hardcore" play the games that AVGN, James or Mike plays. Because if anything those guys are Real Hard Core gamers, shit Dark souls being hard is nothing but a bunch of BullShit
It's a joke mostly, have you seen the "he's back" dark souls vid? And if you make it through the game I feel like you have earned the right to call beginners casual all you want :D if anything it should motivate them.
Dark Souls, imo, has 3 fatal flaws. 1, you can't turn off invasions. This sucks b/c of the rampant hacking & exploits people use. 2, the game practically requires you to grind. And worst of all, 3, no pause. This omission is an absolute disgrace. It doesn't make the game any harder, it just makes the game impossible to play if you have any life whatsoever. Sometimes the doorbell rings, the phone rings, your family needs you, a pet does something it's not supposed to or an emergency arises. I'm sorry, but how many people over 18 can donate hours on end to a game w/o needing to unexpectedly stop at least once or twice. I like the game, but no pause is a complete fucking deal breaker for me.
Vinesauce Joel BU I know this is old, but whatever. You can just play offline to avoid invasions. I've beaten the game several times without grinding. No pause is indeed bullshit.
Filthy casual. The game does not require any grinding at all. It breaks the main purpose of the game if you level up too much. No pause button is just an extra challenge. You can easily play offline if you don't want to be invaded
James, you need to git gud. Was painful watching you play. I'm a massive Souls nerd, with over 500 hours on Dark Souls 1, 2 and bloodborne. Everyone starts somewhere I guess.
Go into the forest after using the crest! You will be rewarded with the loving embrace of everyone online that happens to be in the Forest Convenanent!
And great job with the review. At the beginning, I thought you were going to rant about the difficulty, but you have wonderful judgement. Praise the sun!
There are items hidden on barrels. Just they are not many. In fact when you say that , just a floor up , before entering to the bridge boss. Hit those barrels and there you got, a very special titanite.
Keep playing, man. Its my all time favorite game along with Bioshock. I got DS for my buddy at christmas and he's already played 203 hours the last I heard. I, myself have about 7 different profiles. Really awesome game. Faith/Dex build is by far the most awesome build, but also the most difficult. Just don't give up!
i just appreciate the fact you tried a game you said you normally wouldn't....then gave a review that didnt consist of" this game is impossible or avoid this at all cost"...nice to hear others like games that they find challengingand dont pay 40-60 bucks for a game theyll run through and put down in less than 24 hours
Finally finished this game and on my second playthrough. Only took like 30 something hours. Awesome game. Ty again Mike for making me buy this game. =)
How dare you refer to Solaire of Astora as just some knight guy!
FoxOwne Praise the sun!
+FoxOwne thats what i said
+BlackPhillip Good for you? Why the fuck should I care?
FoxOwne Why do literally every you tuber use inappropriate language.
FoxOwne Why are you a potty mouth
The Nerd Should definitely play this
***** THAtS THE BEST PART!! =D
+nightmuffin937 I'm laughing at the very thought of watching him attempt to get by the two Anor Londo archers. :D
He's not that bad. He beat Ghosts 'n' Goblins on the NES.
+nightmuffin937 Well the Nerd did PS2 and Dreamcast games when the PS3 and Xbox 360 were out, and now the PS4 and Xbox One are out so the PS3 and Xbox 360 are retro technically, so the Nerd could definetly do them
nightmuffin937 agreed
I wanna see James play this.
Yes pls, james and mike monday or AVGN, i would like to see any of these with this game...
LwNickV Wouldn't the nerd just Rage Quit?
The nerd maybe, allthough it would be more fun to see him pull through.. But james woulnd't.. But no time for a 40+h james and mike monday i guess lol
LwNickV I want to see AVGN finish the game before making closing thoughts.
Robin8991 he isn't, he does play modern games. He played them a ton of times in Avgn. James is just busy.
8 years later, and seeing Mike not lock on still drives me nuts lol. It makes the combat look so bad.
Bonfires should be considered checkpoints more than save points: the game saves automatically; bonfires simply determine respawn points.
Woah. Sunbro is not JUST somebody to talk to.
Jeffrey Stevens I find it funny how people think that Mike knows everything about the game and automatically knows that Solaire is popular, he may haven't known about Solaire in this review, don't blame him.
@@yokotheneko62 It's not about how "popular" Solaire is. Do you even praise?
Why doesn't Mike do these anymore
ikr
+Jack Walsh More effort compared to just sitting on a sofa playing games while you talk about how shit itunes is.
+Sophisticated Diglett Hahaha
Now he's doing this with Ryan
He did a livestream for DS actually. Check out on Cinemassacre plays
anybody alse see that 17 points in resistance lol
james and mike's modern game reviews are my favourite, they play these games just any other human being would. they are not familiar with games at the beginning.
6:32 "Zweehander"
+andree1991 Zweihander is German though...
It means double handed in German.
It's german spelling. So it's like Tswiehander. Like German two.
So funny when you're talking about the stingy pots in the game.....
The clip shows you smashing a whole group of pots - all but the one that actually had something inside it haha.
Not using Grass Crest Shield? Leveling resistance? Mike you pleb.
Thanks to this video I decided to buy this game and I'm extremely happy I did. This game is AMAZING. Yeah, it's difficult but that's one of the things that makes it great. Most games are too easy nowadays..
"fist thing I did was travel down to the graveyard"
me:hehehe
I love this game so much. Lots of challenge and secrets. I Recommend this to anyone who hasn't played the Souls games
Ahh he put points in resistance. This hurts to look at.
but its the best stat
followed by dexterity
I love how much he's gushing over the game while having only beaten one "story-driven" boss (two if you count Asylum). Love me some souls
+Andrew Crowley heck even taurus demon isnt story drivin i believe, cause i think is optional if you find a certain shortcut i think
Yup, Taurus is entirely skippable, that's why I put it in quotes. For such a diverse boss roster, you certainly don't have to kill many of them
***** especialy if you have the master kkey cause the you can skip both capra and gaping dragon
Andrew Crowley he made to the woods dude, he even shows Sif...
The game is currently $4.99 for Gold members on the Xbox Marketplace. Just figured I'd share that information if you're looking into picking it up for the console.
***** Great! =)
***** As for the other half a million people who may watch this video, I'm sure the tip is appreciated
Ugh, I should of learned this before I bought it off Amazon. Although it was still the best $15 I've spent in quite a while.
Seath's scene in the intro always gives me goosebumps. Love that character.
At 6:33 Zweihander means two-handed sword, it is German :)
“The hit detection is accurate”
It is if you aren't shit at the game, lol
ネセソトナニツキノハコスモ wrong
Mike, you should get Sif's backstory.
It makes the fight much more emotional and epic.
would love to see these games played by you guys :D
great review, i hate the reputation this game has gotten about its difficulty, it has a learning curve ill give you that, like all games, but all enemies hit really hard, so you just gotta be careful and pay attention to your surroundings

Man, the skeleton path is a classic experience I think all DS players had. I heard the game was hard, and when I got there I just assumed thats how hard it was going to be and got really discouraged for a bit.
Mike, target the enemies!
Did you play the entire game without locking on once? Fuck, that WOULD make it hard.
alot of people don't realize you can even do it
B-but they specifically tell you how to do it in the undead asylum.
If they decided that Dark Souls of all games was one they'd enjoy, yeah, kinda...
In the battle against the gargoyle you can see him locking the target.

"Try it out if you have some time to kill"
This translates to:
"This will be the only game you'll ever want to play"
Mike keeps it current and James always focuses on retro, a nice balance between the modern and the antiquated home gaming systems/games.
not anymore, Mike pretty much hates anything new or anything past 1994 really
"When you break them, there's nothing inside." He was one floor below where there's a crystal lizard in a barrel...

Can't wait for Dark Souls 2.
After I heard "We want the Skyrim audience" I gave up all hope for Dark Souls 2.
We'll have to wait and see.
and then it sucked horribly, but at least we got bloodborne aka the best in the series.
noneofyoucanspell yeah, though Bloodborne is more in line with Demon's Souls, DaS' spiritual predecessor.
Dark Souls 2 was a great game, it had beautiful environments and was very open, only people that hate it are the ones who really only care about game mechanics. Even Nioh is hella drab and colorless when compared.
Dark Souls is not a sequel to Demon Souls.
It's considered a spiritual sequel if you want to get technical.
This is the first video by Mike that I really liked. Great game as well.
The name of the sword was "Zweihänder" it's german for double handed
6:30 This thing is called Zweihänder, it is a german word and means Used with both hands, Zwei means two and Hand is hand in german
Play it for mondays!
Learning to Block, Roll, and Parry goes a long way.
Why would you think it's better on the PS3 Mike ? Multiplats were usually better on 360 but in this case it didn't matter.
RetroSimon games with ps3 as the lead platform were better on the ps3. it was a franchise which started off on the ps3 you know.

(Sees Solaire) \[T]/
I think Dark Souls is what Castlevania should be in 3D
There should be an avgn episode on souls series
Dark Souls II does have a difficulty setting.
You can make the game go from super hard (traditional souls gameplay) to really f*cking hard. (Friendly phantoms removed and enemies hit harder)
No easy setting though, that's a good thing.
dark souls has a difficulty setting. it's called Calamity Ring, it doubles the damage you recieve by any source. that and ng+ = welcome to die.

It's a drake, not a dragon
Aww thank you!
St. Haborym It's the official creature name for said creature. What of it? The dragons in Dark Souls lore are all possibly dead.
St. Haborym Well, if you knew the lore, you would know that they are two very different creatures.
St. Haborym That is irrelevant when talking about Dark Souls.

I don’t know why, but I keep coming back to this video. Great work, Mike!
Cinemassacre could you now review dark souls 2 ?
one of the best games EVER.
**COUGH!!** AVGN REVIEW PLEASE! **COUGH!!***
AVGN would shit on the game before he even got past the Undead Chapel :P
I've raged on this game more times than I can remember, but yet I keep playing it and loving it more and more.
>using a knight shield
>leveled up resistance
>fighting sif after gargoyals

seriously though what the fuck are you thinking
What how is fighting sif earlier casual ? besides you don't even need to fight half the bosses in the game and they can just be bypassed

/v/ pls go
As a big castlevania/metroid fan, this was the biggest draw to the game for many of us.
no
Oscar Branko Miljkovic What?
Oscar Branko Miljkovic Nodor!
Solaire? No big deal? #triggered
Seriously one of the best reviews I've seen , think I'm going to pick it up.
Dude, just go with Dark Souls II.
I'm a fan of all 3 games and Dark Souls II is easily the best one.
To late I'm glad I did I'm loving the first one just got the black knight great sword and killed the gargoyles , I'm going into the forest next I think near the blacksmiths
Excellent game very rewarding now I can't wait to play the next one
benjiskitts .
Word of the wise - Don't use the drake sword if you are (tons of newcomers do). It's a beginners trap and will mess up your build.
I'm down in blight town now trying to kill the spider boss , run out of moss so can't even get across to her without getting poisoned now
There's a thin line between loving this game and throwing my controller out the window lol
Zweihander, thats German xD
Umm...danke schoen?
I don't speak any other German besides knowing that zwei = two.
Yeah, so he should have used ZWEI of his HANDEN in order to use that sword, instead he had one hand occupied by equipping the shield...
Dude, every game has asshole fanboys... Plus some people do find Dark Souls hard, no need to call it bullshit if you don't.
It's a joke mostly, have you seen the "he's back" dark souls vid? And if you make it through the game I feel like you have earned the right to call beginners casual all you want :D if anything it should motivate them.
Yeah bruh i played through DS once. Got legendarys and upgrades. PvP was interesting. Did not care to play through it again.
squeezeslemons U FUKN WOT M8 I BEAT IT USING MY DICK AS A JOYSTIK.
WAT R U CASUL. I BET YU WEAR DA JESTER ROBE. WUT HAVEL MAGE YA FOKIN' SKRUB!
WhoAteMyFunDip Grinding isnt needed...after a few tens of hours you should even be able to beat it w/o leveling
Filthy casual. The game does not require any grinding at all. It breaks the main purpose of the game if you level up too much. No pause button is just an extra challenge. You can easily play offline if you don't want to be invaded
Hope James and/or Mike do a video playing the other Souls games or Bloodborne someday.
James, you need to git gud. Was painful watching you play. I'm a massive Souls nerd, with over 500 hours on Dark Souls 1, 2 and bloodborne. Everyone starts somewhere I guess.
pfft. you git gud with my 2000 hours
+TRY LEMONS Pffft. Git gud with my 3600 hours
+Rafael Pfffft. Git gud with my 4200 hours
+DASH596 pfft you git gud with my 2 1/2 hours...
that was Mike playing, not James. also stop saying "git gud" like you're 12 years old.
The fact that he was hitting the barrels instead of rolling into them bothers me
Mike for us, please, make a full play through of this, I would and I know others would love to watch you go through the game fully.
Go into the forest after using the crest! You will be rewarded with the loving embrace of everyone online that happens to be in the Forest Convenanent!
And great job with the review. At the beginning, I thought you were going to rant about the difficulty, but you have wonderful judgement. Praise the sun!
James and Mike Mondays,Dark Souls._.Co op. Would be so cool and fun to watch you guys play .
Back when the Souls games were much more niche
Please, make James & Mike Mondays with this game.
You are now pushing through the game again nicely on stream, not the cleanest run but it was good to watch your progress :)
O elden ring
Dark Souls my alltime favorite game. Nothing else compares
The fight against the Wolf was probably one of the most memorable boss fights in a long while~
I'm really liking Mike's videos lately :D They just get better and better. ^^
i just appreciate the fact you tried a game you said you normally wouldn't....then gave a review that didnt consist of" this game is impossible or avoid this at all cost"...nice to hear others like games that they find challengingand dont pay 40-60 bucks for a game theyll run through and put down in less than 24 hours
Just past the gargoyle? great job, you've made it maybe 15% through the game, great review
I find it funny how mike plays this game to review it well but on James and mike Monday’s they can barely play LEGO Star Wars 😂😂
How I loved this game. Fulfilled and satiated every gaming need I ever had.
I like Mike. he actually plays modern games. not just fucks with them for a few mins
Actually there is sort of a "difficulty setting"
Normal: Use all items
Hard: No spells / ranged weapons
Knoedel: No shields
Great video mike, you've improved a lot at making them and I mean that as a strong compliment.
Finally finished this game and on my second playthrough. Only took like 30 something hours. Awesome game. Ty again Mike for making me buy this game. =)
This video helped me beat dark souls when I was a kid. Haven't missed a game since.
00:04 thanks for sharing what your favourite toys are.. Thats really nice to know in theese last days.
