My tip to drive in Colombia is to pay someone else to drive you. I've been going for almost 40 years and not once has it occurred to me to get behind the wheel. It's not the most dangerous driving country by any means, but it is a huge hassle and the extra cost of hiring a car and driver is quite modest compared to self-drive. By the way, the heavy traffic and low speeds on the new highway are depressing--this is supposed to be the faster direction (the other way uses the old highway without tunnels) and it's still a mess. And Colombia has, without exception, this highest road tolls in the world.

it is true, tolls are very expensive, a good alternative is public transport, the other roads are undoubtedly much more dangerous because they have many curves, stone falls and are very narrow; however I enjoy driving when I visited this country.

as a colombian citizen, I fully agree. People here does not know how left lanes, it is a complete nightmare and completely depressing.
