      Thanks Nigel, one of the plants reminded me of your serissa tree in african landscape. i was thrilled to get a cheap imitation of it :-) You are right about the square pots. I wish i could edit the video to include this point in. too late. i knew i was missing something.

    Identify the plant, Prune it there itself first, Mark the area, Collect it after some time, Aha.. that's a good idea tks for that.. i use to pluck it as and when seen a suitable plant.. Impatience of a beginner bonsai planter, Thanks for this again. (NB: you are my inspiration to start balcony bonsai growing on my resident flat balcony small space)

    • @VinnyChirayil
      @VinnyChirayil  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Collecting from ground is an art. Many things have to be right - season, soil mix & care after collection. I have killed many due to my ignorance of those 3. Collecting is for experienced people. Although i am semi experienced, i abstained from collecting good trees bcos season or timing wasn't right. My suggestion is to master air-layering (much easier) and then only attempt collection. I am assuming you have enough experience to know the difference between good & bad soil mix and container shapes. If my assumption is wrong, skip collecting for now. Also, avoid bonsai pots for all new material. Nursery pots or raised beds are much better.

    • @jean-baptistedupont5967
      @jean-baptistedupont5967 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the quick answer! I'll try to be brief - first, your videos and plants are excellent! I really like strangler figs myself, but here in Europe the climate is not really suitable for them, unfortunately. Now, regarding the air pruning: I had the same results as you did, my plants grow much better and the root system is much more dense and healthy in the air pruning pots (I tried it mostly with Ficus microcarpa, Solenostemon sp., and Cissus rhombifolia.) Regarding the conundrum why air pruning pots are not used that much: I think one of the reasons may be the climate one has to work with. Since you live in Hyderabad (if I understood that correctly), you have the advantage of a tropical, warm and humid climate. Now, here in Europe I noticed that air pruning works very well, however, we do have a lot of wind, and the humidity in the air is usually very low, and the winters are dark and cold (so in winter: extremely dry air in apartments due to heating.) So one has to water the air-pruned plants around twice as much as the ones in conventional pots, because they dry out much faster due to their increased aeration. I have seen nurseries here that use air pruning pots, but only in greenhouses (no wind, high humidity.) So it seems to be something for professional use, but a bit of a hassle for individuals at home (in our climate.)
      The second reason why air pruning pots are not much used for bonsai might be the aesthetic reason, in my opinion: the aesthetics of the final bonsai pot is often neglected by bonsai beginners (and I include myself in that group), although the pot is just as important as the plant itself (the air pruning pots I made myself are practical, but quite ugly, haha.) So air pruning pots do just not fulfill the aesthetic requirements, I'd say. Looking at it from a practical side: since conventional bonsai pots are already quite shallow, they do have a large soil surface where air can penetrate (especially when using akadama, which is quite coarse.) Due to that fact bonsai nurseries already have to spend a lot of time watering all their plants every day (and in summer even twice.) So I think they might just not be willing to further increase pot aeration, since it would result in even more work.
      So, what do you think about that?
      And to conclude: any new videos planned? How is your fabulous collection?

    Hey Vinny,
    How long do the plants in the small containers survive? This is the question friends ask me when they see my stem propagated Ficus Riligiosa in a plastic mini Vim Bar container. Awesome TH-cam channel " Apartment Bonsai " to watch and gain knowledge on mini and micro bonsai and also plant propagation. Thank you Vinny Chirayil for sharing all the fantastic videos. Watching your channel, I ended up collecting seed of local tree around my house and seed propagating the Gulmohar, Rain, Subabul, Copperpod, Jamun and the Pride of Barbados trees. I would like to share progress of my plants. Is there any way we can communicate? Best wishes and Happy Diwali in advance.

      Hi Raghavendra, I am glad to know that you found my videos helpful. I prefer you sharing your plant progression pics/videos here via a link. It will encourage others also to share their own results. With your youtube account, you can upload pics to google photos and make the album shareable with a link or you could make a slideshow of pics using youtube editor or an app like FilmoraGo, which is my preferred tool.
      Plants in small containers can survive for long time, provided extra care is also given. My bottle cap plants are kept under a shade net and not under direct sunlight. Allowing the roots to escape into extra soil or water is also good for the plant. You can treat them like sacrificial roots, pruning once or twice in a year. Happy Diwali to you too !

      I recently used the stem propagation method to propagated Ficus Religiosa. Planning to use it as a Bonsai plant in the coming years. A one foot, pencil thick stem cutting was obtained for a nearby young plant. Keeping the top 3 leaves intact all lower leaves were removed. This was placed in a cup of water with frequent water changes very 3 day. The stem rooted within 20-25 days. This was potted in a small plastic containers with 50-50 % of sand and soil mix. Small amount of home compost was added. A number of holes were made on the
      container with the purpose of natural air pruning of roots as the plant grew. This helps the plant not getting root bounded in the pot.The plant in the Chitale curds container is about 7 month old. To study the root development I decided to report the plant in a slightly wider plastic containers. A dense root development was observed with hardly any root bounding. The procedure carried out for repotting is in the
      subsequent picture and is self explanatory. The new pot is a empty Vim Bar container. The plant looks cute in the pot and I visualise it as mini or micro bonsai. The plant has no subsequent dose of fertilisation to date. The plant is kept in sunlight in the day time for 4-5 hours and as a corner show piece in the later part of the day. Your valuable comments on my small experiment will be appreciated. Here is the link below
