- One of the most challenging parts of landscape photography is learning how to see woodland compositions in what is often considered to be a very confused environment. Like anything in life, learning is an essential part of our growth and to help you grow as a woodland photographer, I have had an idea to improve the way you see compositions. In this video you find me in Cairngorm National Park in Scotland during the autumn period in one of the many beautiful woodland habitats that can be found there.

I had been after that view for many years and it's been tough to find just the right grouping and conditions. Probably why I was keen to run back!

What I really appreciate is how you challenge the viewer to identify the potential subject and then describe and show how you choose to frame the shot, that really is helping me develop my skills and making me think. From my point of view, probably the most effective and usefuil of your films, Simon: at least, amongst those watched so far (I'm almost half way through).
Beeing capable of "seeing" a compelling view or detail in the natural chaos of woodlands, isolating it from the surroundings and framing it successffully is - for me - the most challenging task. I will now begin to see with different eyes: thank you so much!

Loved the concept and loved the images particularly thr 1st one with thr mossy tree. I was suprised how impactful the tree tops against the sky shot was - far better than mine - time to go out and try again. Thanks for the video

it's taken many years of looking up to finally find one that I liked. The separation was just right I thought.
Nicely done and a really good concept. Love the first and second images. The third one I thought was a bit busy.

There's merit in all three shots I thought. I particularly liked the texture of the second shot with the lichen draped tree and the leafy framing. I loved the "guess where I cropped it" element of the film too and surprisingly for me, the shot I thought best (No 2) was the one I got completely wrong. I got the subject right but my framing would have made for nothing like as intimate or successful a shot as it turned out. That really is something for me to think about. Educational and entertaining as ever.

Please let me know in the comments below if you want to see more of the in field cropping during future videos. In this film, my favourite has to be the tree canopy, followed by the lone birch. On reflection, I'm not a big fan of the last image.
I think you may be able to turn the 'cropping' scene into a viewer guessing game?
I'm interested in what questions you ask yourself while you look for images.
I liked the first tree in the sky photo the most because it had a nice colour contrast and also lots of smoothness around the high frequency detail trees.
The other images are still too busy for my liking, but maybe an carefully added blur could help them.

Beautiful Autumn colours with simple imagery. Yes the tree canopy shot was spectacular. The crop lines are better than vaguely pointing over there. Next Simon you will be asking us to put an X on your image as you pan around like (Spot the Ball) or it could be like the (Golden Shot) up a bit down a bit, Bernie the bolt. Getting carried away now.Thing is Simon all sorts of people could be watching your Channel a colour blind photographer may have difficulty in isolating compositions, and putting framing lines on the image is inclusive to more viewers, and it draws us all in. Great Video much appreciated.

I a, bit behind with u tube, but just watched this. I think the first two images are lovely. The third may be a grow on you image. I like the idea of showing how you find the compositions as this is the thing I struggle most with.

Still doing a bit of catch up, but really love this video Simon. Its a very clever way of explaining what you see and what you are focusing in on. Also really interesting to see your crop in process on screen. I can appreciate the work that has gone into this and appreciate the effort.

City streets or country lanes, I tend to shoot the whole of my subject. On all but the first, I would not have cropped in so close. Your "reveal" of the crop marks revealed to me that I should look tighter as well. Thanks for responding to our needs, and finding a way to demonstrate the steps you take.

As someone who struggles with finding the smaller details, I like being able to see the big picture first. Love the crown separation of the upward shot but that copper coloured tree was amazing.

I was really getting inspired to go out to try to use similar photography techniques. Yes I loved the thought process and agree with all your shots but the last one. For me, the photo is to to busy and not a real central drawing point. But, that's just me. Thanks again , it was very very interesting.
The last shot is very much a Marmite shot. I'm not convinced I like it either, but it formed part of the film, so I left it in.

Loved the final image! Must be the colour contrast. Showing the process of how you have arrived at your final compositions worked very well and I would certainly be interested in seeing more of this style of vlog.
Possibly a Marmite shot that one John and I appreciate those of you who liked it.

I’m still making my way through all your videos ☺️ This one was really useful; I spend most of my time looking at the ground, hunting mushrooms and taking macro and I find the ‘bigger picture’ and landscape more tricky to visualise. On the back of a few of your videos I now feel motivated to go try some landscape this weekend. Thanks again for such great content.

I very much enjoyed this approach Simon. I find woodland photography tough. Kent has lots of woodland, but much is managed by the Woodland Trust, so regular copicing, which renders them messy and man effected. I'm practicing but compositions do not come easy.
Your canopy shot was outstanding, a composition very much on my bucket list, but I keep forgetting to look upwards.......you've reminded me to do so 😊.
I know the woodland type all to well Mike. An extreme wide angle lens can sometimes make for a nice shot in this type of woodland. Once you bag that though, there really isn't much left to shoot. They are probably managed for dormice?
