Hey everyone! On our Discord, we host occasional custom card design challenge "contests". The idea was to throw a weird card design stipulation to all the awesome designers there and see what they came up with. We're here to showcase all the designs to you and award a few crowns in the process.

Glad to see more of these videos and everyone's creativity for the challenges.
Regarding "Otherworldly Incantation", the "Deck of Possibilities" card from the "Fortune and Folly" side scenario is the only other card that can put a card from the collection into play. Unfortunately, the rules says you can't play other investigator's signature cards, so you can't summon the sweet tones of "Jim's Trumpet".

The reason for the Ghoul being a weakness is so that it counts as an enemy, and thus you can use cards like power word or eavesdrop with it.
I do think though that some aspects of the design need some reconsideration.

Trish would pay 2xp and a trauma for an on demand aloof enemy that she can move around

Next challenge topic: parley cards that Travis agrees should be parley cards.

if they want a card that isn't parley, takes an action and doesn't provoke AoOs, they just write it in the text.

Wouldn't it potentially break some scenarios to conjure clues from the token bank?

      Probably

There's always a chance, however, there is precedent for it existing in the game. See Mysteries Remain, the book replacement signature for Roland Banks.

Rather than costing trauma I would be interested in cards that cost sanity to use. IE in addition to paying resources you have to take horror in order to play the card. It's how I would try to balance a card like the necronomicon(5).

I mean that already exists (Ward of Protection etc.)

@@ethanlivemere1162 I was thinking specifically assets, I should have used better wording.

Why does Force of Will need a question mark, if it gives an automatic success?

    • @PlayingBoardGames
      @PlayingBoardGames  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

It's so you can commit it to the test you want to automatically succeed.

"Generally a trauma is worth about an experience point and a half, like with In the Thick of It." --> I disagree. That's how much a trauma is worth for a permanent effect, sure. But when you are talking about a card that can be replayed every scenario, you can't just lower the xp cost by 1 or 2 and consider that balanced. If you have a card that says, "Take a physical trauma. Do this cool thing." Well, now you're paying that physical trauma every time you want to do the cool thing. Whereas with ITTOI you are paying the trauma and always getting the 3xp for your Charisma (as an easy example) and you don't have to keep paying trauma to keep using the Charisma.
That's what makes this so difficult for me to wrap my head around these custom cards. Not only am I spending xp for these cards, I'm then having to pay trauma every time I want to use them. (Except for the permanents. Those make a lot of sense.)

That's why I said generally. And I think generally my statement is still true. It's a good starting point for seeing how much trauma balances the XP cost of a card. For example, a card that let an investigator draw 4 cards for 0 cost and 1 trauma should be 2 XP with this general rule, which I think is quite fair.
Now how much that is worth to an individual player will vary, but that is the nature of the design. The majority of the permanent designs didn't make the cut because they weren't as interesting discussions because the trauma cost was easy, which is why I went with the events and assets because it actually prompted some discussion of where that cost of trauma is actually worth it.

I'm a profession game designer, I made the cut but the reaction was mid. Definitely tough competition.
