  • Journey back to the beginning of coal mining in the Appalachians and the beginning of a new culture of people.
Through oral histories, the film profiles the history and culture of the people. It features historic landmarks, such as the 70 year old exhibition mine, the 1883 company store, the 125 year old cemetery, the 1895 Opera House and various churches and buildings throughout town. In addition to the interviews of area residents, there are interviews with college professors, a local congressman, and local leaders.
"Our hope is that people come away from watching and feel like we did when we first visited Pocahontas. The buildings are incredible, the history is fantastic, but neither compare to the real hidden treasures of the area, the stories of the people." Dan McCoig

I was born in Tazwell Va. Lived a great deal of my life in Abbs Valley. I remember Pocahontas with very fond memories. I wish I could return to the area. I do come back as often as I can. I plan to come back one day and do nothing but look up old friends and catch up on what has been happening. God bless you all. J.D.T.

My grandfather worked in the mines there and he was also a photographer. I have a bunch of slides that I need to get developed from these days. Really great photos of the townspeople, and the shops, etc.

If you have gotten any of those slides developed, I would love to see them. My grandfatherwas also a company photographer and surveyor, Clarence E, Brazeal, Sr. He took notebooks and notebooks of people who worked for the company. My Aujnt Dot ahd those photographs and she is dead now. I need to locate my cousins, one of them lives kin Tazewell, and see if she kept those-- I surely hope she did.

I am an African American that was raised there. My father and his family were coal miners. The history was interesting, but did not include any black families.
. What we need is a complete history. Inclosing, thanks for the video, It brings back a lot of memories. We all need to work and make sure that Pocahontas is recognized as a historical place.

@HeartBrokeDownBlue Hey Thanks Joey for the great feedback we hope to improve our skills should we decide to do another long form project. The artist that you asked about is Betsy Ulmer. She is a wonderful Nashville singer/songwriter and she wrote the song "Pocahontas" and recorded it especially for this film.

My dad was born in Pocahontas, VA in 1940. I remember him taking me there as a kid a few time; such a peaceful little town - much different than the big city I'm from in NC. I've never understood how this place has been left to slowly wither when it's so marketable as a tourist spot with such beautiful buildings, diverse history, and "first in the nation" type of places. Not to mention the surrounding geography being a natural attraction. Such lost potential!! It's very saddening to me.

I’ve been there. I was with a group of West Virginia Turnpike travel counselors. For some reason the tour guide took us to Pocahontas. We walked up the Main Street in the middle of the day and saw no one or no cars.

I sympathize with the folks of Pocahontas in their struggle to revive/maintain their community. It is a tragedy as pointed out in the opening lines of this documentary how much money is wasted in war while the taxpayers at home suffer needlessly! I would love to see more films of this nature in the future, depicting true "American History". American history as taught in public schools never show any of this...its all about Americans at war! as being our history...great battles, etc.
    Thanks!

Great video .. I was part of the crew that filled the tippel shaft up in Bossieviane (I probably spelled it wrong ) its location was right behind the post office .. I have always wanted to see a pic of the tippel the way it was back in its day .. do you know wher I might find a pic of it.. I'm verry interested in all of the areas history ... I was the guy who pushed the rocks and dirt into the shaft ...thank you 4 the video

@macduzzit Thank you macduzzit, I love the history of people and small towns as well. I think it is easier to study big events because there is so much information on them such as wars and famous battles. I think that the internet has changed that and all subject matter is rapidly becoming more accessible. I suppose if TH-cam is around another 100 years someone will be studying our conversation as well.
    all the best

Thank you so much for this video of my hometown! I lived in Abbs Valley which was the suburb of Pocahontas. My father and both of my grandfathers were coal miners. I attended Abbs Valley Elementary and Pocahontas high school until going into my 10th grade year in 1988, and they were threatening to close the schools back then. My mom decided that we needed to move from the area because sadly she didn’t see much opportunity left for the area. We ended up moving closer to my grandparents across the state line in West Virginia. I always thought it was such a tragedy to see those beautiful buildings crumble right before your eyes. It’s such a beautiful place with good people and an amazing history. So sad to hear that the high school closed. My fantasy was that a multimillionaire would come in and renovate the buildings in town and turn it into a tourist area, but it’s just a faded dream. God bless the people of Pocahontas!

Got a copy of the below message from Peter. I still want to go back "home" and see Pocahontas even though I know it is sad. I would like to see the photos of the company store in Bossevain, but believe that I have seen the building using GOOGLE Earth. Maybe you can tell m e why you are visiting -- do you have family there? Would love to talk about Pocahontas if we do have a common interest there.

Would it be possible to get a copy of the picture that you have in this video as I am working on our genealogy.

My grandfather, uncles and father worked in the Pocahontas Mines. What is sad there is a lot of black history in Pocahontas. That history is not included in the story. My grandmother was a midwife and delivery both white and black children. I spent my summers at her house in Bossevain and we would walk to the Company Store for groceries. My grandmother died in Pocahontas in 1988. She had to move to Pocahontas because her house in Bossienvain started to sunk underground because of the tunnels of the mines.

I heard that ten to twenty thousand coal mining jobs will be created in Kentucky and Virginia by the end of the year by Trump. maybe forty thousand in West Virginia.

    • @videofan8190
      @videofan8190 7 ปีที่แล้ว

seriously? you don't really believe that do you? How long has coal mining been on the decline. Companies now like natural gas and solar better. You know the old saying, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I grew up in Pocahontas. I have gone back a few times and it breaks my heart. I tell people that Pocahontas was the true melting pot. Forget NY. I have dreams of winning the lottery and restoring the town but it would not be the same.

trump is a con man that a lot of people fell for. I am so sorry for that. The coal towns are my home. I had to move about 30 years ago because there just no work. Coal was declining. I have seen videos about Welch, McDowell county and it just breaks my heart. trump cannot do all that stuff he has said and I am sorry for those that are affected by that. There have been many republican presidents. Why didn't they bring coal back but this New York billionaire is going to do what they could not. For your sake I hope he does but I don't see that happening.

Trump cares for no one but himself, he will say anything to get the vote of those who feel downtrodden and forgotten but has done next to nothing to help anyone but his rich cronies.
