  • One of the best known fairy tales in Norway, this story is one of my personal favourites! It tells of a young beggar girl who leaves home to live with a great, white bear.

    One of my fave folktales, because it's a role reversal. Normally it's the blacksmith's son who rescues the Princess.
    Here, it's the peasant girl who rescues the Prince. She's plucky; "I ain't gonna let no goblins take my man away from me!"

    Very beautiful narration! Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful stories! I want to purchase the book as well as soon as possible. Kay Nielsen was an extraordinarily talented and technical illustrator. Never in my life have I seen more beautiful illustrations in a children's book than those made by Kay Nielsen. All the best and godt nyt år! Keep up the good work, plenty of luck, and much success!

    I just discovered that the East of the Sun & West of the Moon book I checked out at the library didn't have a bear, but a frog. There was a mashup of fairy tales that vaguely resembled the original EotSWotM story. The frog broke me though. It shouldn't be thus named with a Frog Prince. That's why I'm here! I'm glad to hear the original!

    I have the story on CD growing up but no one had ever spoken to had ever heard of it and most people who who did stories on mythology in folklore never mentioned it either so I started to think maybe I had simply confused the story of eros and psyche from Greek mythology Evan has a very similar premise though being very different in details

      Gonna try to give some kind of answer here, this specific tale is a newer version of a tale called Armour and Psyche/Cupid and Psyche/Eros and Psyche and dates from around year 100 .
      The Norwegian version was also made into a movie in 1995 and named "Kristin Lavransdatter".

    This fairytale is extremely unhealthy to read to children. It has #scary elements to it. Why would parents rent out their daughter? Why would a handsome man enslave and test a girl so he can "choose" to marry her, but she can't choose? Why are both men innocent but all four women manipulative and controlling?

    • @AnnaBridgland
      @AnnaBridgland  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Hi Sara. This is an original version of a traditional folk tale and as such the themes contained within reflect the time in which it was written.

      It is an innocuous way to hint to children that all is not rosy in the world, otherwise they will be in for a shock. If you try to tell them in so many words, it will not sink in until something really bad happens. They do not remember the horrific scenes for long and rarely lay awake, especially if the voice is kept smooth and gentle as with our reader here. Here, I reference Jeff Minick, author of Amanda Bell. These sentiments are found in his article, Once Upon a Time, the Importance of Fairy Tales for Children, The Epoch Times news paper

    • @NBDYSPCL
      @NBDYSPCL 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think most children won't overanalyse the gendered power dynamic and take it for what it is, a story about a heroine rescuing a prince from his fate.
      But of an ironic name imo. Not much joy in you is there?
