Central Place Theory
By American Economist Walter Christaller 1939, English translation - 1966)
Book - Central Places In Southern Germany
Based on the study of Barbaria, southern Germany.
Discusses about settlement evolution and how settlements spread out. It is a theoretical concept.
Service sector dominates in Central place.
Hierarchical structure is followed.
1. Market village
2. Township centre
3. Country seat.
4. District seat.
5. Small state capital
6. Provincinal head capital
7. Regional capital
The number of settlement at a level is inversely related with the status in the hierarchy
Objective... Normative theory.
Range of a good.... The maximum distance a consumer can travel to buy a particular product.
Threshold value... The minimum number of consumers are required to sustain a economic activity.
Each and every product has different range and threshold value.
Example. Kerosene has low range as compared to refrigerator.
1. Principle of hierarchy. .. Central place should Always be in hexagonal shape so that no area is left unserved.
2. Concept of central place... Domination of service sector.
3. Concept of Complementary area... Area from which raw materials are extracted
4. Concept of central goods and services... Service sector predominance
Assumptions
1. Isotropic surface ... Uniform terrain and climatic condition
2. Uniform settlement distribution with respect to resource.
3. Uniform population and income level.
4. Settlement is served by a set of Uniformally central place ( no overlap, no unserved area, only hexagonal shape)
Nesting pattern.
K - fixed value
Total number of lower order settlements served by 1 higher order settlement.
1. Market principle... K = 3
The Central place will serve 1/3rd population of the settlements of lower hierarchy.

2. Transport principle ... K = 4
The Central place will serve 1/2 population of the settlements of lower hierarchy.
1, 4, 16, 64
3. Administrative principle... K = 7
The Central place will serve 1/7th of population of the settlements of lower hierarchy.
Limitations
No isotropic surface is found.
Everyone has different thinking pattern.
Fixed hexagonal pattern.
No importance is given to location, rent, transportation network, agglomerations, other economic activities of the goods.
