So, some gun physics for Phloppy. For the same caliber round, a longer barrel will smooth out the pressure curve of firing a round (at least in small arms, not sure how it would differ for tank rounds). This would allow you to use a larger charge of a slower burning powder that will produce a longer pressure curve, applying more overall force to the projectile, usually allowing it to be shot at a higher velocity. Now, when you change calibers, such as going to a larger caliber, then you need a faster burning powder to fill the increased bore volume at the same rate. Coupled with a (typically) heavier projectile, your pressure curve will spike more rapidly and limit the velocity that can be reached.

My experience with reloading my own ammo with firearms. Its all about the bullet weight (shell weight), powder charge (propellant), barrel length, rifling and rifling rate of twist for stabilizing the round.
You can click the grey’d out ammo types it just flips the round you’re selecting and your original rounds place
I believe the difference in ballistics between the 85mm and 100mm has to do with a few things.
Firstly: The 85mm Shell weighs less, so it accelerates faster down the same length of barrel.
Secondly: The larger 100mm shell sits farther back in it's casing, meaning less powder than could perhaps go in. The inner chamber design of the breech does not allow for a longer cartridge.
Finally: The 100mm Shell is less aerodynamic naturally because it is larger. It will have a larger shockwave, slow down faster, and in general because it is thicker, will have a harder time punching a hole in metal. If you try to hit a pipe through a sheet of steel, it probably won't go through, where a nail has a better chance.
The 100mm has a lower velocity because the shell tip basically basically doubles in size while retaining the same barrel length and probably a similar powder charge, of course the 85mm is gonna be faster, it's lighter and also, speed equals penetration when it comes to shells so that's why it has higher pen, it's kinda like comparing a 308 win to a 44 mag

Didn't know the 85mm APDS got better pen. It used to be 230, while the 100mm had 240. That's a nice unneccessary buff.
I think the repairs are fine. They're long enough to make you feel it, but not obnoxiously long, and short enough to get you back into the game, but not short enough devalue crit hits.

the repairs are just right not to long for when you need to repair and not to short to not be able to do a flank on a repairing tank.
The repairs should be longer for the Tigers and panthers, heh.. like 6 hours for transmission.

The repair times realistically should be longer, but for the sake of non-shit gameplay, i think they are just right. They are just annoying enough to make you mad, but not annoying enough to make you quit playing.
The last thing we need are bullshit gameplay elements that push away new players.

Im pretty sure even if the ammo is greyed out you can swap it in the menu. Its weird and counter intuitive but i did it before the patch, not sure if they changed it. Also that snap shot on the desert map was nice

Bigger round doesn’t always mean more pen and better velocity, smaller caliber will tend to have higher velocity, and velocity is what you want to penetrate armor...
The velocity of the shell depends on a few things, namely the pressure behind it, and the actual ballistics of the shell itself.
The 100mm clearly has more explosive mass behind it, so I'd guess the weight of the shell + lesser ballistics leads to the lower velocity of the 100mm
You should be able to repair "non-critical" systems on the move if theyre not involved with transport.
Why does the splash guard on the front come up when you go in water, but it doesn't float?
Other Russian tanks have fixed splash guards to keep water from sweeping in to the drivers hatch. In this case I guess they haven't got it amphibious yet.

The gun seems to be pretty much identical to the 85mm, just with bigger caliber, so lower velocity is pretty understandable. I guess it was worth it for HEAT and APSFDS.

i think the repairs in the game feel more like a patchwork implement of a game mechanic. I wouldn't fuck with it unless they wanted to completely overhaul it into something cool that required rewarding teamwork (like dedicated healers, easier to tow people, if not make recovering large parts from your home base and bringing it to people to repair them... you would need a home base for that to actually mean anything)

Barrel length increases velocity. 100mm L54 did not have a high velocity. Looks like the 85mm may be beefed up to equal an 88L71 instead of a 76L55

Repair speeds don't need adjusting, what we need is bigger games (more players, like 64 vs 64) with infinite re-spawns that don't end until some large objective is completed. Basically, I want a game mode like rush from battlefield, but with tanks and planes.

Phly just going to let you know that when selecting ammo on a tank before battle you can click the greyed out ones to move them :)
Repair times arent bad perse, however I think you should be able to prioritize repairing certain components and the repair times should be a set time, independent of crew training. Tracks = 15 seconds, barrel = 20. If multiple components are damaged it defaults to the longest repairing item, but thats where prioritization comes in. Allows lower level players to not suffer if they shoot a lvl 100 who reps a breech in 10 seconds.

I don't have an issue with repairs times as they are, other than inconsistencies. Some nations take less time with same crew skill and same Canon 105mm L7 for example. But 31 seconds to repair a breech in field? No problem.
Pfft 30 seconds for a Breech repair? Give me a 3 hour repair for that extra realism.
They probably had to use reduced charge since this tank is supposed to be light. Like they did on BMP-3, that thing has a very low velocity gun on it.
in war thunder if you are with the king tiger H and your 2 tracks and your barrel are broken with stock tripulation is like 120 seconds of repair, think is too long for being a game

Phly, do you have the bandwidth to upload everything in 1440p? 1440p looks considerably better than 1080 because of TH-cam's compression.
With a bigger diameter barrel the length will need to be longer to get the same velocity as one with a smaller diameter

Repairs ( Toolkits ) should be a thing that we dont have to research in the first place, but the repair times are ok in my opinion.

Shell weight also depends on it's type. But that 100mm is over 50% heavier from the stats on the screen I saw.

I only complain about repair time when I knock out two crew members in an enemy tank plus their main gun as they knock out mine. Yet they somehow repair and replace crew before I can because max level crew levels.

unless they have changed it for whatever reason you shouldnt have to swap to a different ammo to change its position, you just click on the greyed out ammo and it swaps its position, they only grey it out to let you know its being used already

My only gripe about Russian tanks is the zero depression. Otherwise powerful tanks. And I really like that shell ejection animation the 685 has.
